Chapter 887 Is Charles Waking Up?
Austin was about ready to lose it with all the noise. He took a deep breath, squatted down, and said softly to Hannah, "Hey, aren't you here to see Charles? Don't cry. If he hears you, he'll freak out."
Hannah snapped back to reality. Right, she was here for Charles! No time for tears.
But thinking about how Charles got hurt while getting her breakfast made her heart feel like it was being squeezed.
Stella, still sniffling, helped Hannah up. "We can't go in yet; we can only look from outside! Every day at 4 p.m., only one person gets five minutes! It's not time yet."
Hannah, maybe hearing, maybe not, let Stella help her up. She walked inside, each step a struggle.
The ICU had three layers.
Charles was in the innermost part, behind a big glass wall.
Everyone stood outside, watching everything inside.
Inside was a sterile zone. You had to follow strict procedures to get in; no casual visitors allowed.
Patricia and the others were on the second layer, a long hallway with a bench for families to rest.
The outermost layer was the nurse's observation room, with a big screen showing multiple angles of Charles's condition.
The third layer was split in two: the left side led to the second layer, and the right side was the nurse's monitoring room.
Hannah had been crying at the door between the third and second layers.
Once inside, Hannah leaned against the glass. Seeing Charles in a hospital gown, hooked up to a respirator, looking so pale, she bit her lip until it bled.
In just a day and a night, Charles had lost so much weight. His cheekbones jutted out.
Even through the glass, she could see his dry, peeling lips. He looked so worn out, it broke her heart.
Stella put a hand on her shoulder and whispered, "He's made it through a day and a night. Just two more days and nights! Charles is a fighter; he'll pull through."
Hannah's fingers clawed at the glass, her knuckles turning white.
If she could, she'd trade places with him in a heartbeat.
But it was Charles lying there.
She was heartbroken, so sad she wanted to scream, but she couldn't. Her vision blurred with tears that wouldn't fall.
Turns out, when you're heartbroken to the max, you can't even cry.
You just go numb, your whole body following suit.
Patricia and Martin met Hannah for the first time. They'd heard from Randy that she looked a lot like Violet, but seeing her in person, she looked even more like Violet than they'd imagined.
Thinking about how Charles had finally found the woman he loved, only to get into an accident before they could make it official, made them hate fate even more.
Why did this have to happen to Charles?
The ICU was heavy with sorrow, the air so thick it was hard to breathe.
Hannah stood by the glass for what felt like forever, her legs going numb, but she didn't care.
No matter how much Stella tried to talk to her, she ignored it.
Finally, it was visiting time. No one fought her for the chance. A nurse helped her into sterile clothing and led her into the ICU.
The machines by the bedside beeped.
Hannah, legs shaking, walked to the bedside. Up close, Charles looked even worse than from outside the glass.
His face was ghostly pale from blood loss.
Even his hands, lying by his sides, were pale.
His eye sockets were sunken, dark circles under his eyes.
Hannah's heart felt like it was being ripped apart, the pain making it hard to breathe.
She used her gloved hand to hold Charles's hand, opened her mouth, and after what felt like forever, finally managed to speak.
Hannah whispered, "I'm sorry, it's all my fault. It's all on me."
Charles, lying there, didn't even twitch.
Hannah's mind was flooded with memories of his smile, his gentle voice, and the way he looked at her with so much love. It made her heart hurt even more.
"I like you," she confessed, her voice trembling. "Even though we haven't known each other long, I really like you, just as much as you like me. I promise to be your girlfriend. Please wake up, okay? Charles, wake up. Don't make me worry. I can't live without you. If something happens to you, what will I do? I won't be able to go on!"
But no matter what she said, Charles didn't react.
Hannah's voice cracked with sobs. She wanted to cry from the pain in her heart, but the tears wouldn't come.
"Didn't you say you liked me? Liar, you must be lying! If you liked me, how could you bear to see me so heartbroken? You're a liar. That night when you confessed to me, I wanted to tell you that I liked you too, that I was willing to be your girlfriend! It's all my fault for not telling you my feelings. Why were you so foolish to go buy breakfast for me so early? We could have gone out to eat together! Wake up soon. I'll have breakfast with you every day from now on. We'll be together every day and never be apart again." Hannah poured out all her feelings.
Whether Charles responded or not, she needed to say what was on her mind, to let him know.
Time flew by.
Hannah felt like she hadn't been there long when the nurse said visiting time was over and she had to leave.
She stood up, reluctantly looking at Charles on the bed, choking up, "I'll come see you again tomorrow! You have to wake up."
No matter how much she didn't want to, Hannah had to leave.
Stella, worried about her, immediately went over to support her.
Hannah took off her mask and sterile goggles. After talking with Charles, it seemed like she had resolved the biggest concern in her heart, and the belief that had been supporting her suddenly disappeared.
She gave Stella a weak smile, her body went limp, and she fainted again.
Luckily, Stella was holding her and caught her in time, preventing her from hitting the ground, "Hannah, what's wrong?"
"Hannah." Austin immediately came over and supported her other arm.
Outside the ICU, there was a sudden flurry of panic.
Austin and Stella were about to take Hannah back to her room when Austin's hand suddenly felt empty. Hannah's other arm had already been taken by Randy.
Randy said, "Stella and I will take her! She's my brother's girlfriend. As his brother, it's my duty to take care of her!"
Without waiting for Austin to react, Randy scooped Hannah up in his arms and strode away.
Randy had heard everything Hannah said by Charles's bedside.
Randy also knew from Stella that Austin was Hannah's ex-boyfriend.
No matter what their past relationship was, Hannah was now Charles's girlfriend.
If Charles were awake, he definitely wouldn't want to see Austin touching Hannah.
As his brother, Randy was willing to take over for now.
Stella was stunned by Randy's assertive statement and couldn't help but give him a thumbs up.
Randy was so cool just now. He was incredibly cool.
Randy took Hannah to her room. Stella followed them.
Wyatt went to investigate the cause of the accident.
Martin held Patricia on the bench.
Maximilian held Carol on the other side.
Austin stood by the glass window, quietly watching Charles lying on the bed, his eyes gradually turning vicious.
Charles thought in mind, 'Charles, you forced me! I didn't want to do this! Why did you have to come back? Why did you have to compete with me for Violet? There are so many women in the world, why did you have to compete with me? For Violet, you must die.'
Suddenly, Charles's hand on the bed moved slightly.
And this scene was caught by Austin standing by the glass window.
He squinted his eyes, his gaze chilling.
Charles wondered, 'Charles was waking up? Didn't the doctor say he would become a vegetable? It's only been a few days, and he's waking up? His vitality is too strong!'
Austin turned to look behind him and saw that no one else had noticed. A sinister smile slowly spread across his face.
Since he saw it, he wouldn't be polite.
Charles, if you don't want to be a vegetable, then be a completely dead man!
