Chapter 653 Murder
When Patricia arrived at the emergency room, she saw Kaleb standing blankly at the door, staring at the closed doors of the emergency room. In just a short time, he seemed to have aged significantly. His silhouette appeared particularly desolate.
Patricia felt a pang of discomfort in her heart, quickening her steps to his side, softly calling out, "Hi."
All of Kaleb's attention was inside the emergency room. It wasn't until he heard Patricia's voice that he realized she had arrived. Turning to her, a glimmer of hope ignited in his despairing eyes.
"You're finally here," he said, tightly gripping her hand, anxiously pleading, "Patricia, it was all my fault before. I shouldn't have turned a blind eye! I know you're the best and most authoritative expert in cardiac surgery. You can save Maximilian! Help me save him, and if he can get through this safely, I'll save Martin."
Originally, Patricia hadn't intended to use saving Maximilian as a condition to save Martin, but it wasn't the time for explanations. She asked, "What's Mr. Reed's current condition?"
With red eyes and a weary expression, Kaleb replied, "Not good, it's really bad! But thankfully, he was brought in on time for treatment."
Knowing time was of the essence, Patricia interrupted, "Kaleb, we can discuss this later. Quickly inform the doctor to let me into the operating room."
Nodding vigorously, Kaleb left. After a while, a doctor in his fifties, wearing a white coat, arrived. Without wasting time on pleasantries, he asked about Patricia's basic information and then led her into the emergency room.
The doctor told her, "Technically, you're not a doctor at our hospital and don't have the right to enter the emergency room for treatment. However, since Kaleb requested it, I'll make an exception this time. Follow me!"
"Okay!" Patricia nodded. Before entering, she didn't forget to reassure Kaleb, "Kaleb, rest assured, Mr. Reed has been kind to me. Regardless, I'll do my utmost to save him. Don't worry, wait here for him to come out."
Kaleb's chest felt a sharp pang. There were many things he wanted to say but didn't know where to start. Thousands of words condensed into two, and he uttered, "Thank you!"
"Don't be so polite with me!" Patricia smiled, not looking back as she entered the emergency room.
Kaleb stood outside the emergency room for a while, his body unable to bear it, so he found a bench and sat down to wait. Over the past twenty years, the members of the Taylor family had passed away or left. The entire Taylor family now consisted of only him and Maximilian, who had always relied on each other. So when Maximilian had an accident, he was the only one who could wait outside the emergency room.
The emergency red light above the emergency room continued to glow. Kaleb kept staring at that red light. After an unknown period, Joe, Susan, Billy, and Lisa all arrived.
Having cried all the way there, Lisa's eyes were red and swollen and her voice hoarse. "Maximilian was fine, how did he get into an accident? Is he okay? He isn’t dead, right?" she asked worriedly.
She hadn't even told him she liked him. He couldn't be in trouble. He must not be in trouble.
Kaleb shook his head, distraught. "Patricia is one of the world's top cardiac surgery experts. She's gone to save Maximilian. With her there, Maximilian will be fine."
He said this to comfort Lisa and himself.
Lisa stood at the door of the emergency room, head lowered, eyes closed, fists clenched at her lips, silently praying that Maximilian was not in danger.
Joe sat beside Kaleb, gently patting his shoulder. "Maximilian is a good kid. He's done so many good things from childhood to now. He'll be fine."
Billy added, "My dad is right. Maximilian will be fine."
Rubbing his face vigorously with both hands, Kaleb had no mood to speak. He just hoped Patricia would come out soon and tell him that Maximilian had been saved and was okay.
Susan and Lisa prayed together outside the emergency room.
Time ticked by. Each minute felt like an eternity. It seemed like the sound of the clock ticking could be heard in their ears.
After a while, the red light outside the emergency room finally went out. Kaleb was surprised and stood up abruptly from the bench, walking quickly to the door of the emergency room. Later, the door of the emergency room opened.
Patricia walked out, looking exhausted. Before she could speak, Kaleb grabbed her shoulder eagerly, asking, "How is Maximilian? Is he okay?"
Although Patricia felt very tired and pale, she forced a weak smile. "Mr. Reed has temporarily passed the critical stage, but he needs to be observed in the ICU for three days. If he gets through these three days safely, then he'll be fine."
Upon hearing this, Lisa breathed a sigh of relief.
Although Kaleb hoped Maximilian would get through these three days safely, he couldn't help but voice his concerns, "But what if he doesn't make it through these three days?"
It was something he didn't want to face, something he dared not face. When faced with things one doesn't want to or dare to face, the subconscious instinct was to avoid it, thinking that not facing it meant it wouldn't happen.
Patricia knew what he wanted to say and smiled. "Don't worry, I'll stay by his side for these three days. If anything happens, I'll be ready to provide immediate treatment."
"Thank you very much." Tears of gratitude streamed down Kaleb's face. Compared to Patricia, he suddenly felt his perspective was limited, having confined himself to the curse rather than treating the patients who needed him.
After a while, Maximilian was wheeled from the emergency room to the ICU by a nurse. Since Patricia had to stay with him, she couldn't go to care for Martin in the ward. She called Ryan to take care of Martin properly. As for Martin's medication, she took it to the hospital pharmacy to have it prepared.
Hearing her conversation with Ryan, Kaleb felt even more guilty and self-blaming.
Maximilian had temporarily passed the critical stage, so Joe had the chance to ask about his condition. "Maximilian was fine, how did he suddenly have an accident? Isn't his car supposed to be regularly checked and sent for inspection? If there had been a problem, he would have discovered in time. How did he have an accident?"
Kaleb shook his head. "We still don't know the cause of the accident! By the time I arrived at the hospital, he had already been taken to the emergency room! I haven't even had a chance to say a word to him."
Joe felt something was off and asked seriously, "The car? Was it sent for inspection?"
In a somber tone, Kaleb replied, "The car exploded on its own."
Joe fell silent.
Lisa exclaimed, "The car was perfectly fine, how could it explode? There must be a problem! It must be deliberate murder! Someone wanted to kill Maximilian."
Joe looked at Billy, who nodded. "I know. I'll have it thoroughly checked. If the car was tampered with, we'll find out."
Joe nodded. "As soon as possible!"
"Okay!" After Billy responded, he left.
Joe patted Kaleb's shoulder, saying, "If there really was an intentional murder, I'll make sure justice is served for Maximilian."
Clasping his hands into fists, Kaleb restrained the rage burning inside him. If someone truly intended to harm Maximilian, he wouldn't need Joe to act; he wouldn't let them get away with it.
