Chapter 949 Hannah Disappears
After ditching the clinic, Charles hit up Wyatt, asking him to scope out the road cams and track down Hannah.
Meanwhile, he sped over to D University, blowing up Hannah's phone the whole way.
"Sorry, the number you dialed is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."
He kept at it, not ready to throw in the towel.
"Sorry, the number you dialed is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."
No matter how many times he tried, that same robotic chick kept answering.
His heart started sinking, bit by bit.
A wave of fear he'd never felt before washed over him.
Since last night, he'd been on edge, feeling like something bad was about to go down.
And now, all his worries were coming true.
Charles slammed his hand on the steering wheel, boiling with anger and regret.
He shouldn't have let Hannah leave last night. He should've laid everything out for her.
She must've been super disappointed in him, which was why she bailed without a word.
Memories of their time together played in his head like a movie reel.
His heart ached like crazy.
His chest felt tight and sour, filled with a gnawing pain. His eyes turned red, and his vision started to blur.
The drive from the clinic to D University was pretty far.
But Charles was in such a rush, he cut a forty-minute drive down to twenty.
Stella was waiting at the entrance. As soon as she saw Charles, she ran over.
Charles, all anxious, asked, "Did you notice anything weird about her last night?"
Stella pouted, looking all upset, "Ever since she saw Violet, she was acting off all day yesterday! I was so worried about her at night, I didn't dare to sleep. Because I stayed up so late, I was out cold the next day and didn't even know when she left."
Stella felt super guilty. If she'd known, she would've stayed up all night.
If anything happened to Hannah, she'd never forgive herself.
Charles and Stella headed towards D University as he asked, "Have you checked the spots she usually hangs out?"
Stella shook her head. "D University is huge, and I walk too slowly. I hadn't finished looking before I came to wait for you at the entrance."
Charles asked, "Where does she usually like to go?"
Stella ran through their daily routine, "Honestly, she doesn't go to many places! In the morning, we hit the cafeteria for breakfast together, then head to class. We like to have breakfast at the first cafeteria and lunch at the fourth. After lunch, we chill at the library for a bit. If we have classes at 2 PM, we go. If not, we head back to the dorm to rest. Sometimes we take a walk by the lake."
Charles asked, "Where have you checked?"
Stella replied, "I checked the cafeteria, but she wasn't there! I also went to the lake, but it's too big, and I hadn't finished looking."
Stella was searching by the lake alone.
Unless Hannah stayed put, it would be impossible for them to meet if they were walking separately.
Charles frowned and said, "Let's search together."
"Okay!" Stella nodded and first took Charles to the first cafeteria, then to the library.
The first and fourth cafeterias were pretty far apart, with the lake smack in the middle. So, they figured they'd hit up the lake first.
But man, that lake was huge. They split up, walking in opposite directions, and after half an hour, still no sign of Hannah.
Next, they checked out the fourth cafeteria and the classrooms.
Stella dragged Charles to every spot Hannah might go, but they came up empty. They even asked around, but no one had seen her.
By the time they were done searching, it was pitch black outside.
Standing at the entrance of D University, they were totally wiped out and feeling hopeless.
"It's been a whole day. Where the heck did Hannah go? Why is her phone still off?" Stella broke down, pounding on Charles's chest with her fists. "This is all your fault. You hurt Hannah, so she took off without a word. If anything happens to her, I'll never forgive you. If I'd known you wouldn't treat her right, I never would've introduced you two! I thought you were someone Hannah could trust forever, but you're just a flake. I hate you."
Charles just stood there, letting her hit him, staring ahead in despair.
Then, his phone rang in his pocket.
He thought it was Wyatt calling, and his eyes lit up. But when he saw Violet's name, his face fell.
Seeing it was Violet, Stella got even angrier. "Answer it! Violet's always been more important to you than Hannah! No wonder Hannah left you. If it were me, I'd have ditched you ages ago and never looked back."
Her words hit Charles hard.
He trembled all over, then hung up the call without a second thought.
Stella was still fuming. "Why aren't you answering? Isn't she your favorite? Didn't you hurt Hannah for her?"
Charles frowned deeply.
Ignoring Stella's jabs, he dialed Wyatt's number.
The call connected quickly.
Charles asked straight up, "Any luck?"
Wyatt replied, "Nope! D University's got four gates, and people are coming and going all the time! We don't even know what Hannah was wearing that day or the exact time she left, so it's a nightmare to check. Plus, with the crappy weather, everyone's bundled up in scarves, hats, and masks, making it hard to see their faces."
If they could see faces clearly, it'd be faster to find her. But with everyone covered up, they had to track each person through surveillance, which was a massive pain.
Charles, frustrated, said, "Get more people on it. Mobilize everyone you can. Even if we have to search all of the university, we have to find Hannah."
"Got it!" Wyatt replied.
After ending the call, Charles stood there, blankly staring at the entrance of D University, not knowing what to do next.
Losing Hannah felt like losing the light and meaning of his life.
