Chapter 799: Violet is missing

Carter laughed and said, "What nonsense are you thinking? Who would dare touch Violet? She's my daughter."

Charles frowned. He felt Carter was in denial. Carter hadn't said anything specific, just that no one would dare touch Violet. That seemed suspicious.

But Charles didn't want to jump to conclusions, so he said, "Carter, I'm worried. I haven't heard from her in a month! Can you check on her at school? Even a quick chat would help."

Carter, feeling guilty, replied, "I'm really busy right now, no time to go."

The more excuses Carter made, the more suspicious Charles got.

"When will you have time? I'm flexible," Charles insisted.

Carter realized if he kept refusing, Charles would get more suspicious and might come back from abroad, making it impossible to hide the truth. So he said, "Tomorrow or the day after. It's a tricky situation and might take some time."

"Alright! The day after tomorrow at 8:30 p.m., Violet will be done with her evening classes. You can find her then. If a video call is tough, just send a voice message. I just need to know she's safe."

"Alright then," Carter reluctantly agreed.

After the call, Charles, though still worried, forced himself to wait for two days.

On the third evening at 8:30, he got his phone ready to call Carter. This time, he didn't call Violet directly but Carter instead. Before he could dial, a message from Violet came through.

He listened to the voice message. Violet's familiar voice said, "Charles, Carter said you were worried about me. I'm fine! Carter arranged for me to stay at school to save commuting time. I have two years before my middle school exams and want to catch up on my studies. Carter is right; even if the Moore family has money, I need to be capable. I can't let Carter and Lassie down. I also want to be worthy of you."

Charles immediately sent a video call request. The video connected quickly, but before he could see Violet's face, he heard an angry shout, "Violet, what are you doing?" The call was cut off.

After a while, Violet sent another voice message, "Charles, I'm sorry, I'm at school and can't video call. I need to write a test now. Don't worry; I'll contact you during my next break."

Her voice was low, like she was sneaking to send the message. Charles felt something was off but couldn't pinpoint it. As he was thinking, Carter called, "Charles, did Violet contact you?"

Charles replied, "She sent me a message."

Carter asked, "Did you video call her? I'm still busy, but I asked her teacher to send you a message."

Charles replied, "Yeah, but the teacher found out, and I didn't get to see her before the video cut off. Is their school that strict?"

Carter explained, "She's in eighth grade, about to take her middle school exams, so yeah, it's strict. Don't overthink it. Violet's just busy with her studies. It'll be even tougher in high school. By the time she graduates, you'll be back from studying abroad. When she's of legal age, I'll arrange your wedding."

Hearing "marriage", Charles blushed slightly. "If Violet's fine, then I'm fine too. I'll hang up now." He ended the call quickly.

Carter sighed in relief. Charles then sent Violet a message. Charles: [Violet, message me when you can. Make sure to rest and don't overwork yourself.]

About an hour later, Violet replied with an "OK" gesture. After that, they only exchanged occasional voice messages. Charles figured she was busy with her studies and didn't want to disturb her. He knew she had to work hard to succeed and didn't want her to feel pressured.

Two years later, on the day of Violet's middle school exams, Charles secretly flew back to Sunset Bay to support her. He went straight to her school instead of going home.

At the school gate, the guard stopped him, "I'm a relative of Violet from Class 1, Grade 9. I'm here to pick her up."

The guard laughed, "Get lost, there's no such person!"

Charles's face darkened, "I'm here to find Violet from Class 1, Grade 9. If you keep this up, I'll go straight to your principal."

The guard replied, "Even if you go to the principal, there's no such person here! You can't expect our principal to conjure her up with magic!"

Thinking the guard was lying, Charles took out his phone to call the school administration. Before the call connected, the guard said, "Our school really doesn't have such a person! Violet went missing two years ago and hasn't been found since!"

The guard explained that Violet disappeared just outside the school parking lot, making it a well-known incident at the school.

Charles's face turned grim, "Missing? How could she be missing? If she went missing, then who have I been talking to these past two years?"

The guard replied, "I don't know about that! But Violet went missing in the first semester of eighth grade. Everyone in the school knows about it."

Charles believed the guard. All his lingering doubts over the years suddenly made sense. He finally understood why Violet never video-called him and why she suddenly became so busy. Something had happened.
