Chapter 897 The Helpless Austin
Karen, all chained up, was sitting on the ground, leaning against the wall with this smug look on her face.
She smirked, "See? Told ya, as long as you listen to me, Martin ain't gonna catch you. You're my kid, why would I hurt you?"
Austin snapped his head up, glaring at her with pure hatred.
It was her. All her fault.
She was like this devil, always whispering in his ear, dragging him into this mess.
Karen burst out laughing, seeing his angry face.
She sneered, "What's done is done. No use crying over spilled milk! I didn't force you! You're my son. We’re cut from the same cloth."
Her words hit Austin right in the gut, messing with his head.
He shouted, "Shut up, just shut up."
Karen's laugh was creepy, like it came straight from hell, "If it wasn't for me, Charles would be a veggie by now. If it wasn't for me, Martin would've found you ages ago! You're just an ungrateful backstabber."
Austin covered his ears, trying to block her out.
Seeing she got to him, Karen softened her tone, "Trust me, I'm doing this for you! Charles got lucky this time, but next time he won't. I know what I'm doing, I won't let them find you."
First Charles, then Randy, Fannie, Maria, Declan, and finally Patricia and Martin. And the Koch family. Austin's dad's death was tied to all of them.
She wanted revenge. One by one, slowly.
Austin broke down, burying his face in his knees, covering his ears. Even though he hated her voice, he didn't leave.
Somehow, they had become allies. Whenever he was lost, scared, or terrified, he would come to her, this woman who claimed to be his mom.
Just being here made him feel oddly calm.
Even though he hated her, was disgusted by her, and despised her, he still relied on her.
Their relationship was twisted. They hated each other but depended on each other.
They couldn't cut ties, but they couldn't fully connect either.
Karen went on, "Trevor's caught, and Michael's been found out. Martin's gonna be on high alert, so now's not the time to act! Let Charles live a bit longer. Wait till they drop their guard before we strike."
She wanted Charles dead ASAP. But if Austin got caught, all her plans would go up in smoke.
She had to be patient. Take it step by step.
Austin looked at Karen with a mocking smile, feeling pathetic.
Since they reunited, all she ever talked about was revenge, never once caring about him.
He was born for revenge. Without it, he probably wouldn't even exist.
If it wasn't for her planning, he wouldn't have found Michael, made a deal, and hired someone to kill Charles.
If it wasn't for her, he wouldn't have known he could kill to silence someone, cutting off all clues so Martin couldn't trace it back to him.
If it wasn't for her, he wouldn't have known he could kill like this.
Karen tried to soothe him, "Hey, it's totally normal to freak out after your first kill. The more you do it, the easier it gets! Just remember, you can't let them find out. If they do, Michael's death will mean nothing. Violet will hate your guts, Carter will be crushed, and you'll lose everything."
Austin's heart twisted at the thought of Violet's disgusted face if she knew he turned Charles into a vegetable and had blood on his hands, and Carter's disappointed look.
Karen was right. He couldn't let them know it was him.
If they found out, he'd lose Violet, Carter, and Lassie for good.
He didn't care about the Moore family's money, but he cared about Carter as a father and Lassie as a mother.
Seeing his face change, Karen knew her words hit home.
Her son, who always claimed to hate and despise her, still leaned on her for support. She was one step closer to her revenge.
On the way back, the Reed family's driver was at the wheel, with Maximilian and Martin in the back seat.
Maximilian asked, "The main guy offed himself out of guilt. What do we do with Trevor locked in the basement? And we still haven't caught the person who messed with Charles' brakes."
Martin leaned against the window, deep in thought.
He replied, "That guy's probably just like Trevor, a hired hand."
So, catching him wouldn't do much. As long as the buyer didn't pay, he wouldn't harm Charles.
Maximilian nodded, "Yeah, I think so too. His getup was just like Trevor's when we nabbed him, definitely a pro."
Martin had a lot on his mind and stayed quiet.
Seeing Martin didn't want to talk, Maximilian kept his mouth shut.
After a while, Martin said, "Even though that guy tried to kill Charles, he failed. Later, send him to the cops and make sure they never let him out."
Martin wasn't heartless; he didn't want to kill unless he had to.
Maximilian nodded, agreeing completely.
When they got home, Patricia and Carol were already up.
When they asked, Maximilian and Martin just said they went out to handle some business and it was done now, so they came back.
They didn't think much of it.
Since it was already noon, everyone had lunch. After eating, they all headed to the hospital to visit Charles.
After Carol and Patricia left the house, Maximilian had the bodyguards take Trevor, who was locked in the basement and almost bled out, to the police station.
Today was just like any other day.
Charles still lay quietly in the hospital bed, showing no signs of waking up.
Martin didn't dare tell Patricia about Charles waking up last night, fearing she'd get her hopes up only to be let down, and also fearing she'd dig deeper and find out about Trevor.
When Randy saw Martin arrive, he immediately pulled him to the balcony and handed him his phone.
Randy said, "Dad, check this out. I got it from the hospital's surveillance room this morning. Maybe we can find some clues."
Martin took the phone and watched the surveillance video.
In the video, it was clear that when Austin came out of the break room, he ran into someone in the hallway asking for directions. That person took the chance to drop sleeping pills into the water cup while Austin was distracted.
Because it was in the hospital, the person who drugged the water wasn't wearing a hat, just a mask.
