Chapter 806: The Gift
He used his own software; just had to input a name and age, and all the info popped up.
Charles swiped his fingers across the screen, found the right Hannah among many, and clicked.
The info matched what Stella had said, just more detailed.
Hannah was 19, born on March 10th, with parents from China who moved to Germany five years ago.
Everything was clearly recorded, proving Hannah wasn't Violet. They just looked alike.
Charles closed the laptop, leaned back, and sighed. Still no news about Violet.
In the evening, Charles got a message from Stella.
[Charles, it's not working. I can't see anything! Hannah's too cautious. Tried to sneak a peek while she was showering, but got caught. She thought I was pranking her. Now she's on guard, and I can't get any info.]
Charles laughed, imagining Stella trying to sneak a peek.
Since Hannah wasn't Violet, no need to waste time.
Charles messaged Stella.
[Don't bother looking anymore, I know now.]
Stella replied: [Really, no need to look anymore?]
Charles: [Yes, no need!]
He added: [When she starts her internship, just contact Wyatt. He'll handle it.]
Stella agreed and moved on.
Hannah, like others who looked like Violet, was quickly forgotten by Charles.
Summer break came, and Hannah joined IntelliMerge Technologies.
Wyatt gave her a job in news and publicity: writing press releases, taking event photos, making videos, tweets, posters, etc.
The tasks fit her major perfectly.
Hannah was thrilled and folded a thousand lucky stars to thank Charles, asking Stella to deliver them.
Stella tossed the glass bottle of stars into Charles's lap.
"Hannah asked me to give this to you," Stella said.
Charles, surprised, picked up the bottle and frowned.
"These are lucky stars?" he asked.
Stella nodded, "Yep, she wanted to thank you. She's very happy with the job you arranged. She folded these herself!"
Charles found the colorful stars amusing. He'd received many gifts, but never lucky stars.
Stella, flipping through a book, explained, "Hannah knows you're wealthy and lack nothing, so she folded these stars herself. She hopes they bring you luck in finding Violet."
Charles raised an eyebrow, thinking of Hannah's face that resembled Violet's.
"She knows how to be grateful."
Stella added, "Of course! She's my only true friend since childhood. She folded these stars without resting for three days and nights! If it were me, I wouldn't have lasted."
Charles smiled and put the bottle of lucky stars in his desk drawer.
"Thank her for me! I hope these stars help me find Violet soon," he said.
Stella was surprised he accepted the gift so easily. She smiled, put the book back, and clapped her hands. "Mission accomplished, I should get going!"
Charles waved her off. "Mm!"
Stella left.
On the first day of summer break, Hannah eagerly reported to the company.
"Hi everyone, I'm Hannah, the new intern. Please take care of me and feel free to assign me any tasks."
After her intro, everyone glanced at her briefly and then went back to their conversations.
"Is she the intern who got in through some higher-up connection?"
"I heard Wyatt arranged it."
"Everyone here went through tough tests to get in! Even Wyatt had to go through multiple screenings. But she just skipped all that."
"Do you know who helped her?"
"No idea! She's taking a spot from someone more qualified. I can't stand that."
"Yeah! Who's gonna let her do anything? If she messes up, who's to blame?"
They didn't lower their voices, so Hannah heard everything. She felt embarrassed and her face turned red.
She was indeed introduced by someone, but Wyatt had assessed her abilities before placing her in this department. She hadn't expected this reaction.
As she stood there, unsure of what to do, a pair of hands rested on her shoulders, and a deep male voice spoke in her ear.
"Have I taught you to be petty? Since she's in our department, we're all family. No bullying the newcomer."
The smell of smoke and bad breath hit Hannah's nose. She tensed up and frowned, wanting to move away but refrained to avoid hurting the man's feelings.
Her colleagues glanced at the hand on her shoulder, smirking, and addressed the man, "Got it, boss!"
The man laughed. "Don't mind them! They have a heavy workload and are in a bad mood."
Hannah finally turned to look at him. He seemed to be in his forties, not particularly tall or handsome, but with regular features and a medium build, dressed neatly.
"And you are?" she asked.
He smiled. "I'm the Director of the News and Publicity Department, Cunningham."
So this was Gordon Cunningham, the head of the department. Wyatt had mentioned him.
"Mr. Cunningham, hello! I'm Hannah, the new intern."
Gordon smiled. "I know, Wyatt told me! It's your first day, so you must be unfamiliar with everything. Come with me; I'll show you around."
"Thank you, Mr. Cunningham!"
Gordon was the first person to show her kindness. Hannah felt more at ease and followed him around the department.
After the tour, Gordon patted her on the shoulder. "Hannah, it's your first day. I'll treat everyone to a meal so we can get to know each other better."
"A meal?"
Thinking of her colleagues' earlier attitudes, Hannah felt a bit hesitant.
Gordon didn't notice her reluctance and smiled. "Don't take what happened earlier to heart. They don't know you yet. Let's have dinner tonight and get to know each other. Once you're familiar, they'll change their minds about you."
Hannah thought he made sense and, after a moment of hesitation, nodded in agreement.
