Chapter 822: Quarrel
Hannah kept her eyes glued to where Austin was supposed to show up.
When she spotted that familiar Bentley, she barely had time to wave before a horn blared behind her.
Curious, she turned around and saw Charles's Maybach rolling up.
Charles had no clue the champagne-colored Bentley was there for Hannah. He parked the Maybach, hopped out, and strolled over to her.
The Bentley slowed down.
Charles stood next to Hannah.
Back in the day, Violet next to Charles looked like a kid with a parent.
But now, with Hannah next to him, they looked like a perfect match, both in looks and height, with the dim streetlights giving them a cozy vibe.
Sitting in the Bentley, Austin squinted.
Seeing Charles pop up out of nowhere, Hannah asked, "What are you doing here?"
Charles replied, "Stella was worried about you going back alone and asked me to give you a ride."
Hannah quickly waved him off, "No need, I..."
Charles grabbed her wrist, "I'm heading that way anyway. It's a bit of a trek to your place, I..."
Before he could finish, a loud horn blared from up ahead.
The sound was loud and relentless, like it was throwing a fit.
Even though the horn couldn't talk, Charles could feel the anger behind it.
Charles recognized it, and so did Hannah.
She already felt guilty for sneaking around at the company.
Today, she was supposed to be at Stella's birthday party, but she lied to Austin about being home and got busted, making her feel even worse. She quickly said to Charles, "Mr. Watson, really, there's no need. My..."
Before she could say "fiancé," she remembered Austin's warning and changed her tune, "Mr. Watson, really, there's no need. My friend is here to pick me up."
Charles raised an eyebrow, "Friend?"
Hannah nodded eagerly and pointed at the Bentley.
"That's my friend's car. He's waiting for me. I'll head over now."
Charles glanced at the Bentley.
It was dark, and the Bentley's headlights were so bright he couldn't see inside. He couldn't even tell if it was a guy or a girl.
But judging by the car, it didn't seem like a woman's ride. So, a guy?
Charles pushed down the weird feeling in his gut and forced a smile, "It's good someone’s here for you. You should go then!"
"Yeah, you be safe on your way back. Bye!"
Hannah waved to Charles and ran to the Bentley, opening the passenger door and sliding in.
Charles raised an eyebrow again.
She even sat in the passenger seat.
So, they were a couple?
He had never thought about this before. If Hannah hadn't said so, he wouldn't have thought in that direction.
Charles stood by the roadside, watching the Bentley turn around and drive off.
From start to finish, the driver didn't even get out to say hi.
Charles pushed down the weird feeling in his gut, got back in his car, and drove off.
All the way, he was kinda distracted.
Even though he tried to ignore the weird feeling, it kept bugging him.
'So, was that guy really Hannah's boyfriend? If Hannah had a boyfriend, why did Stella say she wanted to introduce her to me? Or did I get it wrong, and they were just close friends?' Charles thought.
Charles was so lost in thought he almost ran a red light, luckily braking just in time.
Staring at the red light, Charles chuckled to himself.
What was he even doing? So what if that guy was her boyfriend? What did it matter to him? They'd only known each other for a few days. He needed to stop letting his mind wander. He and Hannah had no relationship beyond a normal boss-subordinate thing. He had no right to meddle in her private life. Yeah, that was it.
Charles took a deep breath and, after a bit, managed to push Hannah out of his head.
Meanwhile...
Inside the Bentley, Austin drove in silence, not saying a word since Hannah got in.
Feeling his anger, Hannah felt super guilty, "Austin, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to lie to you. I just didn't want you to worry."
Austin kept his eyes on the road, not even glancing at her.
Seeing him stay quiet, Hannah felt both guilty and scared.
They'd grown up together, and Austin had always spoiled her, never raising his voice.
But today, he was giving her the cold shoulder.
Hannah said, "Austin, I'm really sorry. I promise, I won't hide anything from you next time!"
Austin still didn't respond.
Hannah was so anxious she was about to cry.
Hannah explained, "The reason I didn't tell you was that I didn't want you to worry! You don't let me go out at night and insist I be home by eight. When you called, it was almost eight, and I knew I wouldn't make it back in time, so I hid it from you. Please don't be mad, okay?"
Seeing he still didn't respond, Hannah placed her hands on his arm and gently shook it.
Hannah said, "Austin, I know you're the best and you love me the most. Please talk to me! Don't be mad anymore."
Whether it was her words or Austin's anger cooling off, he finally spoke.
Austin asked, "Hannah, tell me, do you love me?"
Hannah answered without a second thought, "Of course I do!"
They'd grown up together. Before she met Charles, she thought Austin was the best guy in the world for her. Besides, Austin was her fiancé. How could she not love him!
Hearing her answer, Austin's expression finally softened a bit.
Austin asked, "Who was that guy just now?"
Hannah knew who he meant. Thinking of her secret internship, she blushed and lowered her head, saying, "He's our company's boss."
Austin fell silent again.
His attractive thin lips pressed into a tight line.
Having been with Austin for so many years, Hannah knew him too well and knew he was mad again.
Hannah explained, "Austin, I know I shouldn't have hidden my internship from you, but I really don't want to waste time. I know you can support me, but I don't want to be a woman kept at home by a man. I want to rely on myself. I want to use my abilities to support my parents."
Austin skillfully drove into his neighborhood.
Austin said, "You don't need to prove yourself this way."
Hannah anxiously retorted, "Then how? I'm only nineteen. If I don't chase my dreams now, when will I?"
Austin parked the car in a spot.
Austin said, "You know I cherish you. I don't need you to prove your worth. That's not important to me."
Hearing his words, Hannah felt wronged and said emotionally, "But it's important to me! I don't want to be a woman who asks a man for money."
Austin turned to look at her, "So, you want to postpone our wedding?"
Hannah shook her head, "No! I don't want to postpone our wedding. I just want us to not have kids right away! Let's get the marriage certificate first, get married, and then have kids once my career is stable."
Austin clenched his jaw tightly, staring at Hannah.
