Chapter 170 Charles Tells Patricia There's a Problem with Hunter
After Hunter left, Charles opened his laptop and began an extensive search on Hunter.
He had previously searched for information about Hunter on his phone, but that was just basic information available to everyone. He was looking for something more confidential.
Quietly, he breached the internal information storage of the Miller Group technology and the Miller family. Detailed information about Hunter quickly displayed on his computer screen. After reading everything, Charles's expression turned extremely grim.
Once Patricia and Fannie had returned to their room, he spoke directly, "Mummy, there's something wrong with Hunter, you shouldn't be with him!"
Patricia wasn't planning to accept Hunter, but his words piqued her curiosity, and she couldn't help but ask, "What's wrong with him?"
Charles replied truthfully, "I just hacked into their database to try and find all his information. But unexpectedly, I found nothing at all."
Patricia grew even more perplexed, asking, "If there is nothing, why do you say there is a problem?"
Charles sighed, at a loss for words, "He's the helmsman of the Miller Group, the famous Hunter! How could it be that only the most basic information is available, and no other details can be found?"
With his reminder, Patricia seemed to understand something and followed his train of thought, "Are you suggesting that the fact we found nothing at all is, in itself, suspicious?"
Finally grasping the point, Charles breathed a sigh of relief, "Exactly! Don't take my word for it, look!"
Immediately, he hacked into the Langley family's database to search for Martin.
Within moments, all of Martin's information poured out onto the screen. Martin, twenty-seven years old, a graduate with a Master's in Business Administration from Harvard University in Country Y. His father, Samuel; his mother, Linda Cooper; his sister, Charlotte; his stepmother, Martha; the love of his life, Debbie; ex-wife, Patricia; son, Randy; and newly recognized son, Charles...
Not only was his personal information comprehensive, but everything from the honors he had received, to the injuries he had sustained, to the illnesses he had endured, were all meticulously recorded.
Even the details of how, when he first took over as president of the Langley Group, several board members tried to trap him, and how he ultimately resolved the issue, kicking them off the board, were clearly stated.
It's worth noting that this incident was carried out quietly at the time, with public announcements claiming those board members retired voluntarily due to old age. The true circumstances were unknown to outsiders.
Yet, Charles had managed to uncover every last detail.
Patricia's eyes widened in amazement, incredulous, she said, "Charles, you're incredible, what kind of software is this, to be able to dig up information so thoroughly?"
Charles was left speechless by her focus on trivial matters. He then hacked into the Miller family's database.
Apart from Hunter's personal information and list of achievements, there was nothing else - it was squeaky clean.
After comparing the two cases, Charles said, "Do you see now? How can it be that he has nothing after twenty-eight years? This information is just too clean."
Patricia was equally baffled. How could a normal person's life be without any setbacks?
She vividly remembered being eight years old, mischievously climbing a tree, and then being unable to get down. Hunter had injured his arm trying to rescue her, leaving a deep scar.
Charles was able to find information on something as minor as Martin bumping his head at the age of three, yet there was no record of an event as significant as Hunter's injury. Indeed, it was quite peculiar.
Charles assessed, "A person will only completely erase their information if they've done something terrible and don't want others to discover what they've been up to. Perhaps they intend to delete only a portion, but fearing it won't be thoroughly cleared, they choose to wipe everything. Ironically, this tends to arouse more suspicion."
Patricia wondered, "But why would he do that?"
Charles shrugged. "I don't know his reasons, but one thing is certain, he's hiding something unsavory. Such people are dangerous; you should stay away. So, you mustn't agree to his requests, especially not to marry him, or you may not even know how you meet your end."
With emphasis, Patricia poked his forehead. "Alright, I've got it! I'll find time to talk things over with him!"
She had never intended to get any closer to Hunter.
"Don't 'find time'. Do it tomorrow; the sooner, the better. No dragging your feet..." He said as he pulled out her phone, found Hunter's WhatsApp number, and sent a message.
"Are you free tomorrow? Let's have lunch together!"
Patricia watched him baffled.
The reply was instant: "Whenever you ask, I'm available!"
Quick to act, Charles composed another message and sent it. "Tomorrow at noon, West Rose Restaurant, Table 12 by the window. Don't be late."
Hunter replied with an 'ok' gesture.
Once done, he casually tossed the phone back to Patricia.
Patricia said, “ I am your mother, you know. Shouldn't you show me some respect?"
"Oh!" Charles replied nonchalantly, adding, "Dear Mother, I've arranged your meeting with Hunter tomorrow at West Rose Restaurant. Remember to be on time!"
Patricia still puzzled by everything said, "Let's call it a night! I'll talk to him tomorrow!"
Obediently, Charles shut down his computer and went to the restroom to freshen up before heading to bed.
The commotion had somewhat diluted the inconvenience caused by Martin the previous night.
Elsewhere.
Martin sat in his car, watching the apartment where Patricia was staying until the pre-dawn light began to change, before driving home.
The household staff had just gotten up and hadn't started their workday.
Just as he opened the door, a slim figure threw herself into his arms. The sudden impact caught Martin off guard, causing him to stumble backward, almost losing his balance.
Unaware of his discomfort, Charlotte hugged him tightly and nuzzled into his chest. "Martin, where have you been all night? Don't you know I was worried about you?"
It was then that Martin remembered there was a new presence in the house. Unaccustomed to such intimacy with a woman, he gently pulled her out of his embrace and said in a deep voice, "You've been up all night?"
Charlotte's eyes were red, and she nodded her head with a sense of grievance: "I'm scared being here all alone, I can't sleep!"
Martin frowned, "Don't you have the servants?"
With her head lowered and in a soft voice, Charlotte said, "But I don't know them! You're the only one I know. Martin, do you dislike me? Do you think I'm a burden? Am I trouble?"
Her voice was filled with sorrow and seemed to choke up, as if she could cry at any moment.
Martin's icy heart softened a little, and he gently patted her shoulder to comfort her: "How could that be! It was my oversight. I forgot it's your first day back, of course you'd be scared!"
Hearing this, Charlotte quickly lifted her head, her eyes sparkling like stars in the night sky, looking utterly innocent.
"Really? Can you promise to take me with you wherever you go then? It's been over a decade since we last saw each other, and I want to blend into your life as soon as possible."
A shadowy flicker crossed the depths of Martin's gaze.
After some thought, he nodded in agreement: "Alright! You first go back to sleep, and later I will take you to see Randy at the hospital."
"Yay! Then I'm going back to my room. Goodnight, Martin!" Charlotte exclaimed joyfully with a leap, pecked Martin on the cheek quickly, and bounded upstairs like a cheerful magpie.
After she kissed him, Martin touched the spot, lowered his gaze to hide his true feelings, and strode upstairs.
Once back in her room, Charlotte lay on the bed, her innocent smile gradually turning cold. From underneath the pillow, she murmured, "Progress is going smoothly."
