Chapter 960 Violet Is Not the Same as Before

After ditching the clinic, Charles was all set to drop them off at home and then hustle back to find Hannah.

But Carter's puppy eyes got the best of him, so he caved and agreed to grab dinner with them.

Post-dinner, after calming Violet down, it was already ten by the time he rolled back home. Dude was beat, and his legs, which were just starting to feel better, were killing him again.

Charles figured Hannah had probably already bounced back to the dorm.

But as soon as he cracked open the door, this amazing smell hit him.

Suddenly, he felt a jolt of energy, his tired eyes lit up, and he practically sprinted to the kitchen. Seeing Hannah bustling around in there, his heart swelled with a kind of satisfaction he'd never felt before.

Hannah was whipping up some porridge, tasting it with a spoon.

Charles leaned his tall frame against the door, arms crossed, eyes locked on Hannah with a grin, like he was admiring a masterpiece.

He realized that having someone waiting for him at home, cooking for him, was the best feeling ever.

The once cold house now felt warm and alive.

He wasn't alone in this cold, empty place anymore.

Hannah tasted the porridge again, not happy with the flavor. She frowned, put the spoon down, added some seasoning, and tried it again.

This time, she was pleased. She smiled, nodded, covered the pot, washed her hands, and pulled out her phone from her pocket, only to drop it on the floor.

She frowned, wiped her hands on her apron, and picked up the phone with a pained look.

Muttering to herself, she said, "Dang it, hope it's not busted. Can't afford a new one."

Charles found her adorable, his grin stretching ear to ear, shoulders shaking, trying not to laugh out loud.

After checking the phone and finding it okay, Hannah sighed in relief. She turned the heat down and was about to leave.

Hannah muttered, "It's past ten. Where is he? If he doesn't show up soon, I'm gonna..."

Before she could finish, she spotted Charles at the door, leaning there, shaking with laughter.

From his look, she knew he'd been there a while and had seen her little mishap. Her face went red, and she playfully scolded, "When did you get back? Did you stay quiet just to watch me make a fool of myself?"

Charles, still chuckling, walked over and hugged her tight.

In that moment, his heart finally felt at peace.

Holding Hannah, all the stress and drama from Violet just melted away, his heart full of Hannah.

Charles said, "I just wanna hold you like this forever!"

Sensing his sadness, Hannah lightly patted his back, teasing, "What are you talking about? If we hold each other forever, we'll starve!"

Charles buried his face in her neck, took a deep breath, and suddenly said, "Hannah, let's get married!"

Hannah was stunned. It was so out of the blue, she didn't know how to react.

She wasn't sure if he was serious or just messing around.

Seeing her just standing there, Charles repeated, "I mean it, Hannah. I really like you. I can't stand being without you. I wanna be with you all the time and take care of you forever!"

Hannah realized he wasn't joking. She stepped back, held his face, and looked him dead in the eyes, asking, "Are you serious?"

Charles nodded, no hesitation. "Yeah, I am!"

Hannah was confused. "Why? Why bring up marriage out of nowhere? Did something happen?"

Charles pouted, looking all hurt, "If we don't get married, I'm scared you'll leave me someday! Once we're hitched, it's official, and you can't just bail."

Hannah burst out laughing at his expression. "Are you for real? Have you thought this through?"

Charles hugged her again, declaring, "Every word I said is true! Let's get married! You're old enough! We can do this."

He really wanted to hold on to this happy moment.

Not even for a minute, not even for a second, did he want to be apart from Hannah.

He thought Hannah felt the same way, but to his surprise, she shook her head and firmly said, "No!"

Charles's smile faded, and he let go of her, looking all disappointed. "Why? Don't you like me? Don't you wanna marry me?"

Hannah shook her head. "It's not that. I do wanna marry you! But not now!"

Charles was super bummed. "Then when?"

Hannah explained, "After Violet's better! With her condition right now, what if she finds out we got married and it makes her worse?"

If Violet really clung to Charles for life, she would go nuts.

Mentioning Violet's name made the veins on Charles's forehead throb, and his mood, which had just improved, tanked again. "I always feel she's different from before. She..."

Before he could finish, Hannah suddenly remembered the porridge on the stove and pushed Charles out. "Go wait for me in the dining room. I'll bring out dinner, and we can talk while we eat."

Charles was indeed starving.

At dinner, he was in such a bad mood he barely ate. Back then, he didn't feel hungry at all, but now that his mood had lifted, he was starving.

Charles obediently found a place to sit.

Soon, Hannah came out with two bowls of porridge, placing one in front of Charles and keeping one for herself.

They sat across from each other.

Hannah explained, "Most of the stuff in the fridge went bad, so I just made some porridge! It tastes okay. Give it a try."

Charles said happily, "If you made it, I love it!"

"Sweet talker!" Hannah rolled her eyes at him, scooped a spoonful of porridge into her mouth, and asked while eating, "What were you saying earlier? You feel Violet's different from before?"

She thought they were just chatting and didn't think much of it.

She knew Charles had been feeling down lately, so she wanted to help him vent and lighten up.

Mentioning Violet made Charles frown unconsciously. "She's different in every way!"

Hannah laughed. "That's normal! You haven't seen each other for seven years. It's normal for her to change! Seven years is a long time, enough to change a lot of things, let alone a person."

Charles was silent for a moment.

For the first time, the usually smooth-talking Charles didn't know how to put his thoughts into words. "It just feels different. Even though we're not blood-related, we lived together for over ten years. That sense of familiarity is gone! She feels like a stranger to me."
