Chapter 978 Violet Knows About Hannah and Charles' Relationship
After Charles parked the car, he grabbed Shirley's hand and they headed straight to the fried chicken joint where Hannah worked.
With Christmas around the corner, the place was packed with students and parents on break. The fried chicken shop was buzzing, and there were two long lines at the counter.
Hannah was on duty, taking orders and cleaning tables, and today she was manning the register.
Charles led Shirley to the line where Hannah was working.
Shirley, being short, was at risk of getting squished, so Charles picked her up.
She spotted Hannah behind the register and waved excitedly. "Hannah!"
But with all the noise and people, Hannah didn't hear her.
Shirley looked bummed out.
Charles said, "Hannah's busy right now. What do you usually get when you come here with your parents? Got a favorite?"
Shirley pouted and shook her head. "Mom says this is junk food and doesn't let me eat it. A lot of my friends have tried it, but I haven't!"
She looked so sad and disappointed.
Charles patted her head. "It's okay to have it once in a while! Your parents just care about you."
Shirley nodded. "I know. They've been extra careful since Violet's accident. They love me and are just being cautious."
Her understanding made Charles feel a bit sad.
Charles said, "Since you don't know what to get, let's ask Hannah. She can tell us what's good for kids."
Shirley's eyes lit up as she looked at Hannah. "Whatever Hannah likes, I like too."
Charles had a thought and asked, "Do you like Violet more, or Hannah more?"
Shirley's face scrunched up in thought.
Charles sighed, "It's okay. Violet is your real sister. It's normal to like her more."
Shirley got anxious and shook her head. "It's not like that! I've only met Hannah once, but I really like her. She feels like my real sister. I really like her. But..." Shirley hesitated before saying, "But Violet is so pitiful. She's been through so much and is still sick. If I don't like her, she'll be even more pitiful."
Charles got it.
Shirley hadn't answered because she felt bad for Violet.
She was really kind-hearted.
Violet used to be like that too.
But after seven years, Violet had changed.
Even though the line was long, chatting made the wait easier.
Finally, it was their turn.
"Hi, what can I get for you?" Hannah asked, not looking up as she printed the last order.
Charles cleared his throat and lowered his voice, "It's our first time here. Any recommendations?"
Hannah replied, "We have several combo meals. How many of you are there, I..."
Before she could finish, Shirley excitedly interrupted, "Hannah!"
Hearing her voice, Hannah looked up and her face lit up. "What are you guys doing here so early?"
Charles adjusted Shirley in his arms and grinned. "We thought coming early would mean fewer people, but we were way off."
Hannah chuckled. "It's been crazy busy all day, every day. Why don't you take Shirley somewhere else for a bit and come back to pick me up later?"
Before Charles could respond, Shirley shook her head. "No! We want to stay here with you."
Charles nodded. "Yeah, we came to hang out with you. Shopping is boring. Just give us whatever's popular with kids, and we'll find a spot to eat."
"Sure thing!" Hannah saw the long line behind them and quickly rang up all the popular kid's items.
Waiting for the food took a while.
They kept an eye out for seats, and when a spot opened up facing Hannah's counter, they snagged it.
Charles, the president of IntelliMerge Technologies, was eating junk food in a crowded place, grabbing seats, and waiting for Hannah to get off work. It was a new and interesting experience for him.
After about half an hour, the food was ready. Charles let Shirley sit while he went to grab the food.
Throughout the day, Charles's eyes kept darting between Shirley and Hannah.
Hannah would glance over and smile at them whenever she had a moment.
A private detective outside captured the whole scene.
When Violet got the photos, she was livid.
Violet thought, 'I knew it! They can't just be friends. A woman's intuition is never wrong. Charles is having an affair with Hannah and even took Shirley to see her at work. I won't let anyone take Charles from me.'
Hannah had no clue Violet had hired a private detective to follow them.
After work, she was exhausted.
Charles and Shirley had waited for her all day.
"So tired!" Hannah said.
When Shirley saw her, she ran over and grabbed her hand. "Hannah, you're finally done! Are you tired? Want me to give you a massage?"
Hannah smiled and shook her head. "It's late. How about we find something fun to do for a bit and head back before it gets dark?"
Shirley shook her head. "No, there's nothing fun to do! You've been working all day and must be tired. Let's go home! Charles said he's cooking dinner tonight."
Hannah looked at Charles, surprised. "You're cooking?"
Charles puffed out his chest. "What? Don't think I can cook?"
Hannah laughed and nodded. "Alright, let's hit the supermarket and see what you've got!"
The three of them went to the supermarket and bought a bunch of groceries.
Back home, Hannah and Shirley snuggled up to watch cartoons while Charles, wearing an apron, cooked in the kitchen.
