Chapter 892 Charles Is About to Wake Up
The second Trevor's mug was out in the open, Wyatt flicked on the lights in the hospital room.
Maximilian gave Trevor the once-over. Nope, didn't recognize this dude at all.
Maximilian shot out, "Who the hell are you? Why'd you try to off my nephew? Was it you who messed with the car that day?"
Trevor was busted, but he was chill as a cucumber. Seriously, the guy was the calmest one there.
He just stared at Maximilian, not saying a word.
Maximilian, feeling dissed, got even more pissed and slapped Trevor hard across the face.
Maximilian yelled, "I'm talking to you! Are you freaking deaf?"
Trevor just kept smiling, still silent.
Maximilian usually prided himself on keeping his cool, but today, he was losing it.
Seeing Trevor's smug grin made him even madder. It felt like they were the butt of some joke, and Trevor was the one laughing. It was infuriating.
Without thinking twice, he slapped Trevor a few more times. Quick and precise, splitting Trevor's lip, making it bleed.
Trevor didn't give a damn. He spat the blood on the floor. No anger, no pain, just a bigger, more provoking smile.
Maximilian had never met anyone like this. He felt a rage boiling inside him, stuck in his chest, making him feel like crap.
If he could, he would've pinned Trevor down and beat the crap out of him.
How could someone be so damn annoying?
For the first time, he felt like he could actually kill someone.
Just as he was about to lose it, Randy walked in with some doctors and nurses.
They were all stunned by the scene.
Wyatt, not wanting to freak out the medical staff, whispered to Maximilian, "Mr. Reed, let's get him outta here. This is a hospital, and Mr. Watson needs his rest."
Maximilian knew he was right. If they were gonna deal with this, it shouldn't be now, and definitely not here.
Maximilian ordered, "Gag him so he can't scream, take him to the basement, and lock him up. I'll handle him when I get back."
He added, "Keep a close eye on him. He's slippery, and if you're not careful, he'll get away."
The bodyguards got the message, grabbed a towel from the bathroom, stuffed it in Trevor's mouth, then put a hat and mask on him, and hauled him out.
Once Trevor was gone, Wyatt got the doctors to check on Charles.
Meanwhile, Randy went over to the sofa bed where Hannah was half-hanging off, gently moved her to the bed, and covered her with a blanket.
The doctor asked Martin to lay Charles flat on the bed and started examining him.
Martin explained what he saw when he walked in.
The doctor listened while checking Charles.
When he checked the pupil's response to light, he got excited, "Hey, come look at this."
Martin, Maximilian, and Randy crowded around.
Randy asked, "Is Charles waking up?"
The doctor nodded, holding Charles' left eyelid open and shining a flashlight, "Look, his pupils are responding to light. This morning, his eyes wouldn't follow light or objects. But now, there's a response."
Randy grabbed the doctor's arm, his voice shaking with joy, "So, you mean Charles is about to wake up?"
The doc broke it down, "Not exactly! His pupils reacting to light means he's starting to come around! His chances of waking up just jumped from ten percent to fifty percent. But we can't say when he'll actually wake up. All I can tell you is, based on how he's doing now, he's on the mend, and at this rate, he will wake up someday! I've seen a lot of patients in a vegetative state, and his condition is the best and most promising."
Even though the doc didn't flat-out say Charles would wake up or when, his words definitely gave them a glimmer of hope.
At least, it was a step in the right direction.
Martin frowned and asked, "Then why did he wake up just now? Why did he grab the guy who tried to kill him?"
The doc shrugged, "I can't explain that right now because I've never seen anything like it in my career."
He paused and then guessed, "Maybe his will to survive is so strong that he could briefly wake up in a life-or-death situation."
Martin looked down, sounding bummed, "So we got excited for nothing."
He thought Charles had woken up! Turned out to be a false alarm.
The doc said, "Not necessarily! We've done research showing that some vegetative patients, even though they can't wake up, are still conscious! They can hear you! Talk to him, take turns chatting with him. Does he have any unfinished business or someone he really misses? Bring that person to talk to him. It might wake him up."
Maximilian asked, "Has there been a successful case before?"
The doc nodded, "Yep! I once treated a patient with an even smaller chance of waking up than Charles, only five percent. He fell down the stairs, hit his head, and ended up in a vegetative state! His parents divorced when he was young, and he hadn't seen his biological mom for over twenty years. His biggest wish was to reunite with her. When his mom found out about his accident, she rushed over and stayed by his side, talking to him every day. After more than half a month, he miraculously woke up. After waking up, he told us he could hear every word his mom said, and he swore to wake up no matter what to see her. He's the most classic case in our hospital. His recovery gave hope to the families of other vegetative patients. So, if he has any regrets or someone he really misses, bring that person to talk to him. It might wake him up sooner."
After hearing the doc's words, everyone's eyes landed on Hannah. Everyone knew Hannah was Charles' regret.
In his life, even though his parents split when he was five, he'd been living a smooth life since he was six, now holding great power, with almost no setbacks, except for his pursuit of Hannah, which left him with a regret.
Thinking of this, Martin and Randy's eyes darkened.
No, it wasn't Hannah. Charles' biggest regret in life should be not finding Violet.
Randy said, disappointed, "Charles used all this advanced tech and searched for so long but couldn't find her. Where can we find her now?"
The doc, not wanting to get mixed up in family drama, said after finishing his bit, "If possible, try to fulfill it. If not, then it'll depend on his willpower to recover slowly."
After speaking, the doc led the nurses out.
Maximilian sighed and said helplessly, "Everyone knows Charles' biggest regret is Violet! Where can we find her?"
Everyone fell silent.
The room suddenly got real quiet.
