Chapter 109 Concern for the Ex-wife

Sophia had just started to drift off to sleep when a phone call suddenly woke her up. Worried about waking her two children, she hurriedly reached for the phone to hang up, but accidentally answered it in her haste. Fortunately, it turned out to be a good thing.

After finishing the call, Sophia quickly got out of bed. She changed clothes and came out of the bathroom only to find Ethan rubbing his eyes, looking at her groggily.

"Mommy, are you going out?" he asked, glancing outside to see that it was still dark.

"Mommy has something urgent to take care of. You and your sister go back to sleep. If Mommy hasn't come back in the morning, you can find something to eat in the fridge before getting on the school bus."

Seeing how worried his mom was, Ethan immediately snapped out of his drowsiness, his little face resembling Gabriel's seriousness.

"Don't worry, Mommy. I'll take care of my sister," he reassured her.

"Good boy," Sophia kissed her son before leaving.

On the way, she couldn't help but think and regret. Did she say something too harsh when she rejected Vincent? Did it hurt his self-esteem? It had all happened so suddenly, and she hadn't been mentally prepared. She had simply blurted out whatever came to mind, without sugarcoating it. If she had known Vincent would take it so badly, she wouldn't have said anything.

Vincent was a doctor, and the most important quality for a doctor was strong mental resilience. If one's emotions couldn't be stabilized, they couldn't become a qualified doctor. But Vincent was the most outstanding young chief physician in the hospital. His mental resilience was the best Sophia had ever seen, besides Gabriel. How could he fall apart just because his confession was rejected?

Sophia arrived at the hospital in a rush and saw a police officer standing outside the emergency room.

"Officer, how is my friend doing?" she anxiously asked.

"We don't know yet. It's been an hour since they went in," the police officer replied with concern on his face.

Sophia leaned against the wall, feeling heavy-hearted and biting her lip, overwhelmed by guilt.

After another ten minutes or so, the doctor came out.

"Other than a severe abdominal injury, the rest are minor external wounds. The patient can be taken to the ward to rest. They will wake up once the anesthesia wears off," the doctor explained.

"Thank you, doctor."

Then Vincent was brought out on a stretcher. When Sophia saw his bruised face, she was taken aback and asked with confusion, "Why is there still a wound on his face?"

"He got punched in the face. It's fortunate that he wasn't disfigured," the police officer recalled the scene and thought the person had a pretty rough time.

"He got punched?" Sophia felt like she had misunderstood.

"Yes, don't you know? Your friend got beaten up in a bar," the police officer informed her.

Sophia was shocked

The person on the phone hadn't explained it clearly. They just mentioned a lot of blood and that the person had fallen into a coma and was in the emergency room, urging her to come quickly. She had instinctively thought that Vincent had attempted suicide by cutting his wrist. This misunderstanding was quite significant.

On the way to the ward, Sophia asked the police officer about what had happened. It turned out that Vincent had gone to the bar to get drunk and somehow got into a conflict with someone. Under the influence of alcohol, a group of people acted impulsively and violently.

Angry, he didn't hold back, stabbing Vincent heavily with a broken wine bottle, leaving him seriously injured.

After thanking the police officer several times and seeing him off, Sophia stayed in the hospital room with Vincent.

The next day, Sophia called Ethan and the teacher, making sure the two kids got on the school bus before she could relax.

She went out to buy some breakfast for herself and came back to find Vincent already awake.

"Vincent, you're awake. Is there anything uncomfortable?" Sophia asked with concern.

Looking at Sophia's caring face, Vincent felt like he was dreaming. His head was dizzy, and he felt a hot pain in his abdomen.

"Where am I?" Just as the anesthesia was wearing off, he was still a bit dazed.

"In the hospital."

Sophia poured him a glass of water.

Vincent wanted to sit up, but every movement caused intense pain in his abdomen. In the end, Sophia used a spoon to feed him some water.

His consciousness gradually returned, and he remembered everything before losing consciousness.

He... Vincent turned his head and didn't dare to look at Sophia.

What a disgrace.

He went to the bar to get drunk, and as a result, ended up in this pathetic state. Moreover, it was the woman he liked who came to take care of him.

"Sophia, you should go to work. There's nothing much for you here. Hurry to the office," Vincent spoke weakly.

He didn't want Sophia to see him in such a miserable state.

"I took leave. I'll stay here and take care of you today. I bought some breakfast. You should eat a little. I'll cook and bring it over later." Sophia had experience taking care of children, so taking care of Vincent as a patient came naturally to her.

"Sophia, I..." Vincent closed his eyes, unable to find the right words.

Sophia understood his thoughts.

Although she didn't have romantic feelings for Vincent, the years of kinship were enough for her to understand his personality and character.

"It's normal to feel sad and go to the bar to get drunk. It's just that it was your first time, and you should have found someone to accompany you."

Indeed, even though he was thirty years old, Vincent had never been to a bar before.

Once busy with studies and now with work, he also had a conservative gentlemanly nature, thinking that only improper people would go to bars.

He never expected that one day he would become "improper" himself, but it happened only once and ended up getting beaten.

Vincent felt bitter in his heart.

Seeing his low mood, Sophia didn't say too much. She waited for him to have a little porridge before going home to cook.

Vincent asked the doctor about his condition and unintentionally looked at his phone, seeing his face swollen like a pig's head on the screen.

Was he just walking around with such a face?

Being beaten didn't feel like the unluckiest thing to Vincent. It was the darkest to be seen in such an ugly state by the person he liked.

...

In Lancaster, Gabriel had already started various meetings early in the morning. During the second meeting, he noticed that someone was missing.

"Where's Sophia?" His expression was cold and serious as he spoke.

The intimidation of a figure does not require deliberate release to make people feel immense pressure.

Margaret "She took a leave."

"Sick leave?" She was full of energy in the city of D, and then fell ill upon her return?

Gabriel remembered her standing at the factory gate in the cold wind that day. Could she have caught a cold that day?

"No, it's personal leave."

Since when did the boss care about what type of leave an employee took?

Gabriel nodded lightly, refraining from asking further questions, signaling the start of the meeting.

He was still wondering why Sophia took leave.

Now is a critical moment for the Spring Collection, and with Sophia's determination, she shouldn't easily miss any meetings unless something urgent came up.

Gabriel didn't realize that his attention towards Sophia had been gradually increasing.

After the meeting, Alex followed Gabriel into the office.

"The director of the D Factory called today..."

"Alex." Gabriel suddenly interrupted his report.

"Yes?"

"Go find out what happened with Sophia."

Alex was momentarily stunned, the boss... seems to care about his ex-wife.

Assistant Anne teased with a laugh.

"Cough." Gabriel cleared his throat, shifting his gaze to the computer, furrowing his brows. "After all, she's Sam's mommy. If something really happened, Sam would truly be without a mommy."

Alex responded, "Okay, I understand. I'll take care of it right away."
