Chapter 182 Their Daughter
"It's just money you want, right? How much? Name your price." Daisy lifted her proud head, pulling a blank check from her purse with an air of wealth and power.
Alva's mother didn't expect Daisy to be so agreeable and blurted out her ideal number. "Sixty thousand."
Daisy was taken aback. Just sixty thousand? She had the nerve to ask for that.
Daisy wrote six figures on the check. "This is one hundred thousand. The extra forty thousand is for your son's emotional damages."
The teachers were stunned by Daisy's actions. They knew Josie's family was rich, but not this rich. They were willingly being extorted—even giving forty thousand more.
There was not much the teacher could say.
Caroline, driving leisurely to the kindergarten, was met by Ethan and Emma who dragged her towards the principal's office. "What happened? What's going on?"
"Alva's mom is here; she’s looking for trouble with Josie. Godmother, we can testify that Alva was the one bullying first."
Caroline was fond of Josie and knew she was often bullied by Alva, so she hurried along. She ran into Alva's mother, who was leaving contentedly with Alva.
"Alva's mom?" Caroline approached.
"And you are?" Alva's mother looked at Caroline, not recognizing her.
"I'm the art teacher, Caroline."
"Oh, Miss Caroline." Alva's mother's face brightened with a smile, now holding the money.
"Alva's mom, about Josie..."
"Miss Caroline, it's all settled now. There's no problem anymore."
That quick?
"We'll be leaving then," said Alva's mother, walking away with Alva. Once they were at a distance, she advised her son, "Next time, let that Josie hit you a few more times. This way, we'll get rich, and Mommy can buy you even better toys."
Alva didn't understand why he should let Josie hit him, but he understood the part about getting new toys. He thought he might as well get hit a few times... he was already used to being hit by his father at home.
Caroline, Ethan, and Emma stood outside, puzzled. Emma breathed a sigh of relief—it was good that things were resolved.
"Godmother, we're going to class now."
"Go ahead."
Then Daisy came out, bumping right into Caroline.
"Caroline?!" Daisy looked at Caroline in shock, with a flicker of panic crossing her eyes.
Caroline never wanted to see Daisy again in her life, but fate had them meet at the kindergarten.
Caroline was frustrated and decided to ignore her. She looked into the office and saw Josie with her head down, following behind Daisy.
Suddenly, a suspicion crossed Caroline's mind, turning her pale.
Daisy, sensing something, curled her lips into a smug smile. She bent down and suddenly turned into a tender, loving mother. "Josie, come here; call her auntie."
She wanted Josie to call Caroline auntie.
Caroline felt rooted to the spot, staring directly at Josie. Then a sarcastic smile crept onto her lips, and she looked up at Daisy.
"I'm not familiar with you. Please don't try to cozy up to me in the future."
With those cold words, Caroline turned and walked away. Her figure seemed a touch forlorn.
Daisy's smile was one of victory, having seen Caroline's defeated side. She was so pleased that she momentarily forgot her irritation with Josie. She even affectionately stroked Josie's head.
Josie shuddered.
She was very afraid of her mother.
Her mother was only gentle with her when her father was around. This was the first time her mother had spoken to her so gently when her father was not there.
Josie had been nearly scared to death in the office.
She still hadn't recovered yet, her little face pale.
"Alright, back to class."
Her mother didn't scold her harshly but simply told her to return to class.
Could it be that she was to be punished at home later?
Josie returned to the classroom, feeling uneasy.
Caroline sat at her desk; her gaze somewhat blank.
She thought Josie having the surname Roscente was just a coincidence. But no, they even had a daughter, and she was already so big.
So, in the end, he really couldn't wait to get rid of her and marry Daisy.
The memories she had buried deep in her mind were forcibly being dug out at this moment. Caroline clutched her chest, feeling a tearing pain and wanting to cry, but her eyes were dry without a hint of moisture.
A teacher walked in and was startled by Caroline's pallor.
"Miss Caroline, what's wrong with you?"
Caroline opened her mouth, and it took her a while to find her voice.
"I'm feeling a bit unwell. Could you please ask the principal for a leave of absence for me?"
"Of course, no problem."
Caroline had just arrived and now picked up her purse to leave again.
She needed a quiet place to be alone for a while.
Why was it that they could be happily together, even have a healthy and lovely daughter, while her child turned into a cold corpse upon birth?
Caroline sat in her car, leaning against the steering wheel, as suppressed sobs gradually filled the vehicle, her shoulders twitching.
In the evening, when Sophia returned, Ethan and Emma gestured for silence with a "shush."
"What happened?" Sophia asked in a hushed voice.
"Godmother is resting at home," Ethan whispered back.
Sophia went inside, leaving the two children to play, and knocked on Caroline's door before entering.
Caroline lay on the bed, eyes closed, asleep, not looking well. Sophia went over and touched her forehead, but she didn't have a fever.
At that moment, Caroline opened her eyes, and Sophia saw they were red and swollen, obviously from crying.
"Caroline, what's wrong?"
With Sophia's caring inquiry, it was as if a valve had been opened inside Caroline, and a flood of grievances came pouring out. She sat up and hugged Sophia, crying her heart out.
Sophia was bewildered but tried to soothe her by gently patting her back.
"There, there, take it easy."
Take it easy? What an odd thing to say; shouldn't she be telling her not to cry?
A few minutes later, Caroline wiped away her tears.
Sophia waited until she had calmed down before asking what had happened.
Caroline pursed her lips; she had buried her past deep in her heart for many years and never told to anyone. Sophia didn't even know she had once had a child.
Today, learning that Josie was Nicholas Roscente and Daisy's daughter, she was struck hard, thinking of her own poor child, and couldn't accept it all at once.
"Sophia, let me tell you a story."
Sophia sat up straight, all ears.
After a mental struggle, Caroline decided to confide in Sophia.
This matter had been weighing on her for far too long.
If she hadn't run into them, she might have kept it hidden forever.
