Chapter 393 Who Were You Doing This For

Nicholas picked Josie up from kindergarten.

As her biological father, he had every right to take her.

But Caroline had just reunited with Josie for a day. They barely had any time together, and now they were separated again?

Sophia knew that pain all too well. When she got to the hospital, she didn't even know how to break the news to Caroline.

Seeing Sophia's hesitant look, Caroline got the gist.

"Did someone from the Watson family take Josie?"

She had braced herself for this, but she didn't expect it to happen so soon.

A sharp pain hit Caroline's heart.

"Caroline, focus on getting better. Once you're well, I'll go with you to get Josie back."

Given Caroline's condition, any sudden move could make things worse.

Yesterday, Caroline had just found out Josie was her daughter, so of course, she wanted to see Josie right away. Now, Caroline was a bit calmer.

She barely slept last night, thinking about how to get Josie back and how to face the Watson family.

And what happened back then? Was it Daisy, the Watson family, or Nicholas behind this plot?

No matter what, she wouldn't let Josie stay with the Watson family and be mistreated by Daisy.

But in her current state, she couldn't do much.

Even Sophia could only help so much.

"Don't worry. I'll focus on getting better."

Caroline knew she had to recover to fight.

Seeing Caroline had a plan, Sophia felt relieved.

"I haven't touched the money from selling the house. You can use it."

Caroline would need money to fight for Josie. Sophia transferred the money to her.

This time, Caroline didn't refuse. She needed the money to investigate the past and hire a lawyer.

Sophia and her kids stayed with Caroline until around eight before leaving. After they left, the room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

Caroline picked up her phone and dialed a number.

"Paul, I need a favor."

Outside the hospital, the car had been parked for a while, but Nicholas showed no sign of getting out. Paul was getting anxious when he got Caroline's call. He decided to answer it in front of Nicholas.

"What do you need? Just say it, and I'll do it."

Caroline chuckled. "Tell Josie to be good and not to worry. Tell her I'll see her soon and not to be afraid."

"I can't do that."

Caroline wondered if Paul had been kicked out by the Watson family.

She didn't want to make things hard for him.

"If that's the case, then forget it."

"But there's someone who can help you." Paul glanced at Nicholas in the back seat, noticing his clenched fists as he eavesdropped.

"Who?" Caroline asked casually.

"Nicholas."

Caroline went silent.

Paul smirked.

"Caroline? Caroline, what's wrong?" He shouted into the phone, then hung up and turned around.

"Nicholas, Caroline seems unwell. I'll go check on her. You wait here."

With that, Paul jumped out of the car and rushed inside.

Once inside, he found a corner to hide.

About three minutes later, he saw Sharpe pushing Nicholas inside.

Paul covered his mouth, chuckling.

Caroline held her phone, debating whether to call Nicholas.

She thought, 'Nicholas just married Daisy. They must be in their honeymoon phase.'

'If I call now, they'll probably just mock me.'

'Besides, would Nicholas even let me talk to Josie?'

As Caroline struggled with her thoughts, the door opened.

She expected a nurse, but instead, she met Nicholas's cold yet worried eyes.

Worried? No way.

Sure enough, his eyes turned cold the next second.

"What are you doing here?" Caroline's expression hardened.

She hadn't seen Nicholas in a while. Even though she went to the Watson Group every day to teach Josie violin, she hadn't run into him.

'Isn't he living happily with Daisy? Why does he look thinner?' she wondered.

The moment Nicholas saw Caroline, he realized Paul had tricked him.

But seeing her sitting motionless on the bed, pale, with a sharp chin and a scabbed wound on her forehead, he couldn't help but feel concerned.

Nicholas wanted to care for her, but the words got stuck in his throat.

"Didn't you not want Josie? Who are you doing this for now?"

His words were as sharp as ever.

Caroline gripped the bedsheet tightly, wrinkling it.

Her eyes turned red.

"How dare you say I don't want her? Have you treated Josie well all these years? Do you care about what Daisy has turned Josie into?"

Her questions hit Nicholas hard.

"If anyone in the Watson family had shown Josie some care and love, she wouldn't be so timid and weak."

"I didn't know Josie was my daughter before, but now that I do, I won't let you hurt her again!"

Caroline's agitation caused her back to ache, making her tremble in pain.

Nicholas's cold eyes immediately softened with concern. He wheeled himself over, picked up the painkillers from the table, and handed her one.

Caroline glared at him, her anger suddenly dissipating.

For some reason, her tears started falling like broken beads, landing on Nicholas's hand and the pill.

"Do you know how much I've suffered all these years? I always thought she was dead."

"You and Daisy lied to me so cruelly."

Nicholas just stood there, catching Caroline's tears in his hand. It felt like they were burning his palm, scorching his heart.

He opened his mouth, feeling as dry as a desert.

He wanted to say, "I think you don't want Josie because she is my child."

But in the end, he couldn't say a word.

What was the point of saying it now? To her, it would all sound like excuses.

Nicholas lowered his eyes in defeat.

Caroline wiped her tears, took the pill from his hand, and swallowed it with her tears.

Nicholas handed her a cup of water.

Caroline took it and drank.

"It's late. Please leave."

She declared an exodus and then pressed the call button for the nurse to lower her bed.

After a while, Nicholas said hoarsely, "I'll pass on what you want to say to Josie."

Then, Nicholas left. Sharpe was waiting at the door. As soon as Nicholas came out, Sharpe went behind to push the wheelchair.

The nurse finished helping Caroline and left, closing the door.

Maybe it was because she hadn't slept last night, or maybe she was just exhausted from crying, but Caroline fell asleep immediately.
