Chapter 595 A Single Strike

After that, any bit of gratitude Linda had for Caroline just vanished into thin air.

Even though everyone, including the cops, said Caroline did her best to save Diana, in Linda's eyes, Diana was the real victim here.

Linda's heart was shattered for Diana.

"Mom, you already slapped her. Can we just drop it?" Diana tried to calm her down, but it felt like Diana would do anything to repay a favor, which only made Linda even madder.

After that mess, Diana was having nightmares every night, and Linda watched her get skinnier by the day.

The more Diana suffered, the more Linda hated Caroline's guts.

Daniel's face turned dark. "You slapped her?"

Linda said, "I couldn't help it at that moment."

Normally, she wouldn't do something like that, but she was so mad, all reason went out the window, especially since Diana was the one hurt.

Linda thought Daniel would back her up, maybe even ask if her hand hurt from the slap.

But instead, Daniel raised his voice, "You... how could you do that!"

Linda was floored.

Daniel went on, "You used to be so level-headed. No matter what, you'd figure things out before jumping to conclusions. Given the situation, it made sense Caroline ran to save her own skin."

"And Diana was saved in time, which means Caroline didn't abandon her. She must've called the cops in time, stopping those bastards from hurting Diana."

Daniel had never gone off on Linda like that before.

They'd always been a loving couple, with Daniel caring for her from their dating days till now, never arguing.

Now, because of Caroline, Daniel was chewing her out.

Linda felt totally wronged.

"Daniel, you've changed!" she yelled, almost hysterical. "Ever since Diana got back, you've been different, caring less about her."

"Something huge happened, and you didn't say a word to comfort Diana, just handed me a bank card."

"You said you'd cherish our child. When Diana was missing, you searched like crazy. Now that she's back, you don't love her anymore."

"Daniel, what are you saying? Are you looking down on Diana because she was gone all those years or thinking she's not good enough now that she's back?"

Daniel tried to argue, but Linda cut him off.

"Diana is our daughter, the one we searched for and loved for years, yet you blame me for Caroline."

Linda's tears started falling.

Diana was scared by Linda's outburst.

"Mom, don't fight with Dad. Dad cares about me, really!" Diana quickly defended Daniel.

Daniel frowned deeply, wondering, 'Am I wrong? Should I have explained things to Linda earlier?'

Now Linda was head over heels for Diana, willing to do anything for her.

"Listen to me," Daniel tried to explain.

The car stopped, and seeing they were home, Linda got out immediately.

"Diana, let's go home."

She walked to the passenger side, helped Diana out, and they went inside without looking back.

Daniel followed them in, trying to talk to Linda, but she ignored him and even kicked him out of the bedroom.

That night, Daniel didn't get a chance to say a word to Linda.

The next morning, when Linda got up, Daniel was already gone.

Before heading out, Daniel had the housekeeper fill Linda in on his travel plans.

"Mr. Wolf said he had to jet off to City H for something important. Please don't worry; he'll explain everything when he gets back."

The housekeeper passed on the message and stepped aside.

Diana came downstairs just in time to catch this.

"You can go now," Diana said gently to the housekeeper, then took Linda's hand.

"Mom, don't stay mad at Dad. He's got his own way of showing he cares."

Linda sat on the couch with Diana.

Diana kept comforting her, "Look, Dad gives me a ton of pocket money every month, more than I can spend. I can buy clothes and bags I never had before."

"Dad's super busy with work these days, so we don't get to chat much. I get it."

Listening to Diana, Linda felt a bit better.

She thought about how David was also strict with Clayton, and compared to that, he was much more lenient with Diana.

Maybe this was his way of showing fatherly love.

"Dad's birthday is coming up. When he gets back, let's surprise him."

Linda smiled and nodded.

In the afternoon, Mia came over for tea, and during their chat, Diana casually mentioned Daniel's trip to City H.

Mia took a sip of tea.

"Linda, I just remembered Daisy asked me to bring her something. I need to go home and pack."

Linda asked with concern, "How is Daisy doing now?"

Mia sighed, "Nicholas has stationed a bunch of people at The Watson Mansion, saying it's to protect his parents' safety. It looks more like surveillance to me."

Linda was surprised. "Why would Nicholas monitor his own parents?"

Mia continued, "With Daisy and Trevor at The Watson Mansion, I'm also worried. I'll go check on her."

"If it doesn't work out, bring Daisy and Trevor back."

"Yeah, I know. I'll try to persuade Daisy."

Mia hurried off.

Diana stayed with Linda, continuing their tea with laughter and conversation.

The plane was delayed, and by the time Daniel arrived in City H, it was already dark.

He came alone, in a hurry.

Daniel grabbed a small suitcase and hopped into a taxi.

He checked the time. If all went well, he could reach downtown by nine PM. Saskia should still be up by then.

He couldn't wait until tomorrow; he wanted to find out the truth as soon as possible.

'Could Caroline possibly be my daughter?' he wondered.

Daniel closed his eyes to rest.

When he opened them, he realized something was off.

They were in what looked like the middle of nowhere.

"Sir, are you sure you're going the right way?"

The driver answered, "No mistake, this is a shortcut."

Daniel said nothing more but opened the map on his phone, realizing they were already at the border of the neighboring city.

He frowned, pretending to play with his phone while actually sending an SOS message.

However, just as Daniel was halfway through typing, the car suddenly braked hard, and his phone fell.

The driver turned around.

"Sorry, I have to do this."

Daniel stumbled nervously, "I have money. I can give you all my money."

He reached into his pocket with one hand for money and tried to open the door with the other, but he was losing his strength, and the door was locked.

A blow to Daniel's head knocked him out cold.
