Chapter 781 Quite Clever
Edith, afraid of losing her composure, quickly took a sip of lemonade, adjusted herself swiftly, and smiled, "Pretty good, how about you?"
No matter how hard she tried to hide it, Colin could still precisely see how forced her smile was.
"I'm doing well too," Edith replied.
The food was served, and Edith ate in silence while Colin ate slowly. They both adhered to the rule of not talking while eating.
Finally, they finished eating, and Edith went to pay the bill.
They walked out of the restaurant together.
"My car is parked over there, I'll head over first." Edith pointed to the right.
Colin's car was parked to the left.
"Edith," he called out to her.
Edith turned around.
Colin said, "If you need any help, you can come to me."
Under the streetlight, Edith's shadow stretched long, and she smiled with curved eyes. "Okay, thank you."
With that, she left without looking back.
Colin frowned, his tall figure standing still, adjusting his glasses with distinct knuckles.
In the car, Edith placed her hands on the steering wheel. She didn't start the car immediately but stared into the distance, lost in thought.
She understood the meaning of Colin's last words.
Colin probably already knew some things about her.
'Otherwise, why would he say that? But how can I have the face to ask Colin for help?'
Back then, she had dumped him right after returning to the country and cut off all contact with him.
Now, whether she was doing well or not, she shouldn't shamelessly seek help from Colin.
If it weren't for that drunken night, she wouldn't have had dinner with Colin today.
A lost lover was better off as a stranger.
She had no right to disturb Colin's peaceful life.
At that moment, a call came in, and Edith answered. "Hello, Mr. Wallace. Okay, I understand. I'll go to the law firm tomorrow."
When Edith got home, Una was sitting in the living room watching TV, waiting for her. Seeing her return, she asked with concern. "Have you eaten? If not, I'll make you something."
Edith replied, "I ate outside. Why haven't you gone to bed yet?"
"Waiting for you." Una wrapped herself in a blanket. Even though it was hot weather and the air conditioning wasn't on, Una felt cold at night.
Her health wasn't good, so Edith never turned on the air conditioning at home, no matter how hot it was.
"You shouldn't wait for me anymore. The company has a lot of orders recently, and I have to work late every day. Waiting up for me is bad for your health."
Edith walked over and sat next to Una.
Una handed her a glass of water. "Are the company's orders increasing?"
"Yes, once the orders are shipped and payments are settled, the company's finances should improve."
Una's face lit up with a smile.
Because of the Astor Group's situation, she hadn't smiled like this in a long time.
"Edith," Una said, touching Edith's head, "You're so capable. Your father would be very proud of you."
Edith felt a pang in her heart and didn't say anything.
"Edith, tomorrow is your birthday. Let me bake you a cake."
"There's an important meeting at the company tomorrow that might last a long time. Don't bother. Just make me a bowl of pasta like you used to."
Una disagreed, "You haven't celebrated your birthday properly in years. The company's orders are increasing, so take some time tomorrow and let me celebrate your birthday."
"Whether I celebrate or not, it's the same. I'm old enough not to care about rituals. The company is the most important matter now. Once we get through this tough time, my standing in the company will improve, and it will be easier to get rid of Jasper."
Una thought for a moment. "That sounds good."
She sighed heavily.
"It's all our fault. If your father and I hadn't forced you to marry Jasper, our family wouldn't have faced so many problems, and you wouldn't have been delayed for so many years."
Edith was already in her thirties, trapped in a marriage of convenience, with no end in sight.
Thinking about this made Una feel so guilty that she wanted to cry.
"Mom, why bring this up now?" Edith said helplessly.
"I just feel sorry for you," Una replied.
Edith had heard this so many times that she was numb to it. She patiently comforted Una, "Don't worry, it won't be long now."
Edith hadn't dreamed of her father, Dax Astor, in a long time. Maybe because Una mentioned him tonight, she dreamed of that year again.
That year, she was still abroad, preparing to graduate with her master's degree. She wanted to stay abroad, but before she could discuss it with her parents, she received the news of Dax's serious illness.
She had to rush back to the country to be with her parents.
Una had been pampered and protected by Dax all her life. When Dax fell ill, she lost her support.
Fortunately, Dax pulled through, and Edith took care of him.
That year was a tough time for the home appliance industry, and the Astor Group was involved in this crisis. Dax had worked himself sick for the company.
At that time, the Murphy Family proposed a marriage alliance with the Astor Family, promising mutual benefits.
To show their sincerity, they even brought an order to the Astor Family, temporarily easing the company's difficulties.
Dax was eventually persuaded.
When Edith found out, she strongly opposed it, saying she already had a boyfriend abroad.
But if Edith didn't agree, the Murphy Family would give the order to someone else.
Dax and Una persuaded Edith every day, and she couldn't take it anymore. She booked a flight back to Country M.
Just before the wedding registration, Una called, crying, "Edith, come quickly. Your father is about to do something foolish. Hurry!"
Edith rushed to the hospital, where a crowd had gathered, and the police had set up a cordon.
She ran up to the rooftop.
In the dream, Dax's words were still clear. "I don't want to burden my wife and daughter. If I die, some of the company's debts will disappear too. Dear, tell Edith I don't want to force her. I want her to be happy."
The firefighters pulled Dax back from the edge, and that day, with tears in her eyes, she agreed to the marriage.
Standing on the rooftop where Dax had stood, she called Colin to break up with him.
Colin asked why, and Edith said she was staying in the country and didn't want a long-distance relationship.
After that, she deleted and blocked all of Colin's contact information, and the Murphy Family eagerly held the wedding.
When she woke up, two tears slid down Edith's cheeks. She stared at the ceiling, unable to calm her emotions.
There was a knock on the door, followed by Una's voice. "Edith, get up. You're going to be late for work."
Edith quickly wiped away her tears and responded, "Okay."
"Miss Kelly, here are the documents you asked for." Emily placed the documents on the table.
"Thank you." Sophia picked up the documents and started reading.
These were the documents she had asked Emily to find about the Astor Group and Edith.
Since Dax's death, Jasper had taken control of the Astor Group, and Edith had been serving as the general manager, working tirelessly for the company. Jasper hardly managed the company's affairs.
