Chapter 143 Misunderstanding
Tiffany was in a terrible mood. She passed by the apartment today and impulsively decided to come up. She took out a bottle of liquor from Gabriel's cabinet and has been drinking since daytime until now.
She planned to call Gabriel later, knowing that he would not ignore her when he realizes she's drunk.
She wanted to take this opportunity to test Gabriel's feelings.
To her surprise, before she could make the call, Gabriel himself showed up.
This couldn't be more perfect.
She couldn't let go of this chance to mend their relationship.
Gabriel glanced at her indifferently and said, "You've had too much to drink. Rest well."
After saying that, he pushed Tiffany's hand away, but in the next second, she hugged him from behind.
"Gabriel, you're too heartless." Her voice was filled with tears, as if her heart had been completely shattered by him, finally erupting all at once.
"From the moment I started a relationship with you, I sincerely treated Sam as my own child. Everyone can see how well I've treated Sam in the past five years. Just because I was threatened by Alfred and couldn't inform you about his ambitions in time, do you have to dismiss me?"
She cried uncontrollably. It was as if she had lost her parents, sobbing loudly, to the point of almost choking.
It truly made it impossible for anyone to be unmoved.
Gabriel's expression was complicated, and his tone remained indifferent, but it was somewhat softer than before.
"I didn't dismiss you."
"Then why won't you see me?"
Gabriel let go of her hand, turned around, and faced her in the warm light of the entrance hall. Tiffany's face looked pitiful, with two tear streaks on her fair cheeks. Her eyes were red and swollen, yet she still didn't look unattractive in any way.
Tiffany knew how to take care of herself, with her skin so well-maintained that not a single pore could be seen. When Gabriel reunited with her in M Country five years ago, it was the first time he saw Tiffany's true appearance.
To be honest, Tiffany didn't look that attractive back then. If she were to be rated on a scale of ten, she would probably only score a five in terms of looks.
And she even had some acne.
At that time, Gabriel didn't feel disappointed with Tiffany's appearance at all. During his hospitalization period, when he jokingly asked Tiffany what she looked like, she said she wasn't attractive.
After all these years of care, Tiffany's skin had become delicate and smooth. Her facial features also appeared more refined. Coupled with the elevation of her own temperament, the current Tiffany seemed like a completely different person from the Tiffany Gabriel hadn't met five years ago.
It was Gabriel who helped her successfully undergo this transformation.
And it was Gabriel who helped her escape from the bottom.
More importantly, it was Gabriel who nurtured her confidence in her career.
She wanted to hold onto this wonderful Gabriel for the rest of her life.
Gabriel helped Tiffany sit on the sofa and poured her a glass of warm water.
"Are you feeling better now?" Gabriel asked her.
Tiffany took a sip of water and tightened her grip on the glass. She lowered her head, on the verge of losing control.
"I gave you a choice," Gabriel spoke coldly without waiting for her response, his words cutting through the air between his thin lips. "So you must bear the consequences yourself."
A choice? What choice? Is he going to make her leave again?
Tiffany tightly bit her lower lip, unable to utter a word.
"Given Sam's current situation, I need to spend more time with him. If I take care of him, I can't take care of you anymore."
They weren't married yet, and the circumstances weren't right for marriage at the moment. They could only continue to postpone it. If Tiffany didn't want to wait, he could only let her go and find someone else.
As for the promises they made in the past, he could only make up for them in different ways.
Tiffany spoke through tears, "I understand, so I'm not asking you to be with me all the time. But could you spare a little time for me, even just for a meal?"
How humble she was, yet this man remained cold-hearted.
Suddenly, Gabriel didn't want to say anything more. These days, he hadn't seen Tiffany, partly because he had to accompany Sam, but more so because he was investigating the relationship between Tiffany and Alfred.
Before confirming that Tiffany had no involvement, he didn't want to see her.
"Was Sophia really depressed back then, or was it all a lie?"
Tiffany froze. Why was Gabriel suddenly asking about this? She had already proven that the diagnosis of Sophia's depression was fabricated, and she even had the doctor who treated Sophia come forward as a witness.
Gabriel had already gotten his answer from Tiffany's hesitation. He stood up.
"You're drunk. Get some rest." With that, he turned around to leave.
"It's true!" Tiffany suddenly raised her voice, a bit hysterical. "You felt so guilty and couldn't sleep all night. I couldn't bear to see you looking so haggard every day, so I bribed that doctor to help me lie to you."
Gabriel must have learned about Sophia's depression from somewhere and started to doubt it, which led to this question. In such a situation, there was nothing more convincing than directly admitting the truth.
Moreover, her intentions were for him. It was a well-intentioned lie, and if Gabriel had a conscience, he wouldn't blame her.
Indeed, Gabriel didn't blame her. He had no intention of asking Tiffany in the first place, and whether it was true or false, this matter was already in the past. It was pointless to pursue it now.
The more time he spent with Sophia, the more he realized that he had misunderstood her in many ways. And it all started with a diagnosis of depression.
But now, he had let go of those misunderstandings and reacquainted himself with Sophia. He found that the Sophia he knew now was very different from the one he had known five years ago.
"I have something else to attend to. I'll leave now."
This time, Gabriel walked away without hesitation.
Tiffany smoothly slid off the sofa, feeling utterly defeated.
Is Gabriel really going to ignore her just because of this?
How could a man be so heartless and cruel?
After all, she had saved his life!
Oh, his life she had stolen, but over the years, she had already immersed herself in that role and firmly believed she was his savior.
No, she must do something to redeem herself.
...
Caroline returned to find a lovely little addition to the family, and upon seeing the bewildered expression on the cutie's face, she immediately guessed it was Sam.
This was Caroline's first time meeting Sam.
She attempted to get closer and interact with him.
"Hello, Sam. I'm Caroline. You can call me Caroline."
Actually, she wanted to say, "You can call me Auntie," but she was afraid of scaring the child.
Sam disliked contact with strangers, completely shutting himself off in his own world. Caroline's attempts to approach him instinctively pushed him further away.
"Oh well, let's take it slow with developing a connection."
Caroline said several more sentences, but Sam didn't respond. He even kept retreating to the side. Caroline eventually gave up.
Tonight, the three kids squeezed together to sleep with Sophia again. Sophia continued telling them bedtime stories, and Sam behaved obediently by Sophia's side. Whenever she interacted with him, he would respond.
Caroline silently watched, feeling both happy for the reunited family of three and a pang of bitterness in her heart.
She went back to her own room, lying on the bed unable to fall asleep.
