Chapter 357 Come Back to Me
Caroline had just sat down when Nicholas maneuvered his wheelchair over and stopped in front of her.
The table was set with breakfast for two.
Was he planning to have breakfast with her?
Caroline pinched the flesh on her leg hard, the slight pain reminding her that Nicholas was her enemy.
She couldn't sit and have breakfast with him!
But he did save her from the police station last night.
"Eat," Nicholas said, picking up his utensils and elegantly starting to eat his breakfast.
A fleeting moment of animosity flickered in Caroline's gaze. She bowed her head and quietly consumed her breakfast.
This was the first time in six years that Caroline and Nicholas had sat down to have breakfast together.
Nicholas took a bite and glanced at her, a familiar feeling of warmth and sweetness rising in his heart, and a smile appeared on his lips.
This scene had appeared in his dreams countless times, and today it had finally become a reality.
However, even though they were just separated by a table, he still felt that Caroline was very far away.
His slender fingers clenched, wanting to grasp something.
Caroline finished eating fast. "Finished. Thanks, Mr. Watson, for the bed and breakfast. I'll teach Josie violin well, no worries."
She got up to leave.
"Come back."
"What?"
Caroline stopped, thinking he had something else to say.
Nicholas looked at her thin back and said, "Come back to me."
Caroline's whole body stiffened, her hand at her side slowly clenched into a fist, trembling.
Her face turned slightly pale, and she bit her lip.
"Impossible!" The words of refusal took a lot of effort to come out.
Absurd! Nicholas was already with Daisy, and they had their darling daughter, Josie. Was she expected to return to him as a mere paramour?
Caroline's heart felt like it was being cut into pieces with a knife, the pain making the air feel much thinner.
Her beautiful eyes turned red, and tears began to gather.
Nicholas stared intently at her frail yet firm back, gripping his utensils tightly.
He had spent the whole night battling with himself, finally making up his mind, overcoming his inner demons, and setting aside all his pride to win her back.
She didn't even consider it for a moment and directly rejected him.
Nicholas felt as if his heart had been punched hard.
He quickly shut his heart off, his gaze growing cold, and a mocking smile appeared on his lips.
"My riches are boundless. Should you step into the role of my paramour, all your desires shall be fulfilled, and financial concerns will forever be a thing of the past.."
"Aren't these the things you are after?"
Caroline held back with all her might, resisting the urge to slap him.
A rush of anger surged to her head, and she sneered. "There are plenty of people who want me. Who do you think you are?"
"You mean Ben?" Nicholas snorted, "The Doolittle family doesn't think much of you."
Every word Nicholas said felt like a poisoned knife cutting into Caroline's heart.
"It matters little whether the Doolittle family holds me in high regard. Indulge in your repast; I have matters of import to attend to."
Caroline took a step, her body swaying slightly. She bit her lip, forcing herself to stand straight, and left without hesitation.
Nicholas threw his utensils away, his eyes red.
"Why do you look down on me so much?"
He tilted his head back, a tear sliding down from the corner of his eye.
From now on, he would never try to win her back like he just did, never care about her again!
He should have given up six years ago.
However, he had lingered on for six years, and now his heart was kicked away by her once more.
At this moment, his heart was completely dead.
In the taxi, the driver couldn't help but hand a tissue to the back.
"Did you just go through a breakup?"
Caroline took it, her voice choked with tears. "Thank you."
"You're welcome. If you're sad, just cry it out. You'll feel better after crying."
"There are countless men in this world. If this one doesn't work out, just find another."
The driver comforted Caroline a bit. Caroline wiped her tears with the tissue, listening to the music the driver played for her, feeling a warmth in her heart.
Caroline composed herself and went to the hospital.
At the break of dawn, Lisa stirred from her slumber. Following evaluation, she was alert and devoid of any additional symptoms. Subsequently, the physician transferred her to a standard hospital ward.
The professor who had operated on Lisa had returned to his research today.
Lisa's follow-up treatment was now in the hands of Doctor Williams.
"Caroline," Lisa looked at Caroline, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Lisa, you should rest well. Talk to me when you feel better."
Lisa slowly nodded and then closed her eyes.
"Caroline."
Paul came to the hospital every day.
After learning about Lisa's new condition, Paul immediately sent a message to Nicholas.
Nicholas: [Don't send me any more updates.]
'What's going on with Nicholas?' Paul thought.
"Paul, thank you. You've been a great help recently. Let me treat you to a meal," Caroline said as she walked over.
Paul replied, "Sure, but I'm picky. If it's not a fancy meal, I won't eat."
"No problem."
"Caroline."
"What?"
"Did anything happen between you and Nicholas last night?" Paul asked with a mischievous smile.
"No." Mentioning Nicholas made Caroline's face immediately turned cold.
Paul fell silent, thinking,'What's going on between Nicholas and Caroline?'
At the Watson Group, Charles stood with his head down in front of Nicholas while Sharpe stood to the side, sighing inwardly.
'Charles had been with Nicholas longer than me, so he should understand Nicholas's way of handling things better.'
'How could Charles make such a basic mistake?'
Sharpe couldn't figure it out.
Charles clenched his fists. He raised his head and explained, "I heard your leg became like this because of Caroline, so I wanted to teach her a lesson. I..."
Nicholas raised his hand to stop Charles from speaking.
He didn't want to hear any explanations.
"If you make another mistake, you're fired."
Charles felt a bit unwilling, but he knew he had crossed Nicholas's line this time. The fact that he wasn't immediately fired was already a favor.
"Yes, I won't make the same mistake again."
As he left the office, Sharpe patted Charles on the shoulder.
"You worry too much about Mr. Watson's personal affairs."
Charles hung his head.
Sharpe leaned in curiously. "Do you know why Mr. Watson's leg is broken?"
Charles glared at him and said, "I'm not telling you!"
That evening, Sophia called Caroline back for dinner.
The three kids hadn't seen Caroline in a long time and missed her very much.
Emma clung to Caroline.
"Godmother, you haven't taught me violin in a long time."
"Do you only love Josie and not me anymore?"
Caroline pinched Emma's cheek. "Don't worry, I still love you the most."
Emma thought to herself, 'When you find out Josie is your daughter, you won't love me the most anymore.'
Emma's little hand plucked a hair from Caroline's back and secretly passed it to Ethan.
