Chapter 532 Twins?
"Dad, guess what? I found an old buddy of the Kellys."
Colin was buzzing with excitement.
For the past few days, he and David had been busting their butts, leaving early and coming back late, trying to track down some old pals of the Kellys.
After the Kellys' drama, most folks kept their distance, acting like they didn't know a thing. Whenever they asked around, people would just play dumb.
David had just gotten reports from two different places. To be sure, he had Colin check out both spots.
Sitting in the car, David read the reports and then tossed them in the glove box.
David told Colin over the phone, "We'll hit them up first thing tomorrow morning."
"Cool, did you get the reports?"
"Yeah, I got 'em."
"So, what's the scoop?" Colin was dying to know.
"We'll talk about it tomorrow."
"Alright, later then."
After hanging up, David stared ahead, gripping the steering wheel so hard it looked like he might snap it in half.
A quick flash of anger crossed his eyes.
Even with all the chaos inside, he kept his cool, not showing a thing.
David quickly ran through everything in his head.
After five minutes, he picked up his phone and made a call.
"Look into someone for me. I need the info by tomorrow, no later."
After the Lancaster Group's annual bash, employees started their holidays, but Gabriel was still swamped every day.
Sophia was chilling at home, hanging out with her three kids.
It had snowed all day yesterday, and today everything was covered in a beautiful blanket of white.
The kids were bugging Sophia to build a snowman.
Sophia was a bit torn. "But I gotta visit an elder this morning."
They got all excited. "Can we come with you, Mommy?"
Sophia shook her head. "Nope, it's too cold. I'll go alone."
The three kids pouted in unison.
She ruffled their hair. "I'll build a snowman with you when I get back."
"Alright," Ethan said, "Mommy, come back soon."
Emma chimed in, "Mommy, drive safe."
Sam added, "Mommy, use a heat pack."
"Okay, got it."
After giving each of the kids a kiss, Sophia got ready to head out.
The snow on the road had been cleared, but it was still a bit slick. Sophia drove super slow, taking over an hour for a trip that usually took half an hour.
As she got close to North Hill Villas, a car came from the opposite direction. Because the road was slippery, Sophia didn't dare to pass it directly. She pulled over to let the other car go first.
As the car passed, Sophia thought she saw a familiar face inside.
She didn't dwell on it and quickly kept driving.
She was already half an hour late.
A few minutes later, Sophia parked in front of a villa.
A servant opened the door and invited her in. The warmth inside hit her, and Sophia's face, red from the cold, started to thaw.
"Uncle Oscar."
"Sophia, long time no see."
A chubby middle-aged man, smiling warmly, got up to welcome Sophia and asked the servant to get her some ginger tea.
Sophia unwrapped the scarf from her neck.
"Uncle Oscar, you still look so young, not a day older."
"You always knew how to butter me up, just like when you were a kid."
"But it's true."
Oscar Turner and Sophia caught up, and Oscar sighed, "Ever since your family had that mess and you got married, we lost touch. Later, I heard you were in trouble and thought you were really..."
"Uncle Oscar, I just went abroad. I'm good. Really, I'm doing well now."
After the Kellys' mess, a lot of folks started dodging them. Sophia lost touch with many of the Kellys' old friends and even some family.
So, not many people knew she faked her death back then.
The Turners were also a big-deal family. In the previous generation, the Turners' head was tight with the Browns, and Oscar and Sophia's dad, Francis, were classmates. So, in this generation, Oscar was closer to the Kellys.
Sophia shared some recent stuff with Oscar, only talking about the good times and skipping the rough patches.
Oscar was the only elder who didn't ditch the Kellys after the incident, so Sophia had mad respect for him.
She came today with some questions on her mind.
"Uncle Oscar, I need to ask you something."
"Shoot."
"Do you know much about my mom?"
"Your mom?" Oscar asked, "What do you want to know about her?"
"I want to know if my mom was adopted by the Browns."
Oscar's eyes went wide, and he asked seriously, "Why would you ask that?"
"I just feel like my mom was always treated like crap by the Browns. She didn't seem like one of their own, more like she was just taken in."
Oscar thought for a moment and said, "I don't know a ton about your mom, but I do know a few things."
"Please, tell me, Uncle Oscar."
"The Browns actually had two daughters. The other daughter was the same age as your mom. The Browns told everyone they were twins. When your mom was about sixteen, she accidentally fell into a lake in the middle of winter. Your aunt jumped in to save her, and while your mom was saved, your aunt froze to death."
Sophia was floored. No wonder her mom's health was always bad and she was super sensitive to the cold in winter. After having her, her mom couldn't have any more kids.
"Maybe the Browns blamed your mom for your aunt's death, which is why they treated her like dirt. Your mom felt guilty, so she put up with a lot from the Browns, and even your dad helped them out a lot."
If it weren't for the Browns dragging them down, with Francis's skills, the Kelly Group would be killing it today, and Francis would definitely be on the wealth list.
Sophia caught onto some key info.
Sophia thought, 'That aunt died at sixteen, so Patricia couldn't have been my aunt's kid born at sixteen, right? Patricia is the same age as me, and her mom had her in her twenties. So Patricia must be Ella and Logan's kid. Then, what about me? Is my mom really adopted by the Browns? Or is there another secret?'
Oscar shared more, but none of it was useful. Sophia just treated it as catching up and chatted with Oscar for a while.
As they were wrapping up, Oscar suddenly remembered something.
"By the way, two people came by earlier with your photo, asking if I knew you."
"Who were they?" Sophia asked.
"They said their last name was Blackwood."
'Could it be David and Colin?' Sophia wondered.
"What else did they ask?"
"They just asked about your Kellys. Sophia, tell me, are you in trouble?" Oscar looked at her with concern, "If you are, you gotta tell me. Even though I'm semi-retired, I still have connections."
"Uncle Oscar, thank you. I'm not in any trouble, and I have Mrs. Lancaster backing me up."
"The Lancasters are solid." Oscar laughed heartily.
