Chapter 712 Regret
After about five minutes, Daniel brought over the contract, which could be considered as accepting the gift on behalf of Caroline.
"When are you leaving?" Daniel asked.
"Tomorrow." Samuel replied.
Daniel nodded.
Daniel and Linda didn't kick him out, so Samuel breathed a sigh of relief.
After finishing the conversation and handing over the contract of transfer, Samuel also said his goodbyes.
Daniel and Linda didn't ask him to stay.
That day, Samuel went to the prison to see Mia and then visited Daisy at the police station. The next day, he boarded a plane.
Sharpe stayed in the ICU for a day, then his condition improved, and he was moved to a regular ward.
However, Aragorn wasn't so lucky.
Paul said, "Nicholas, Uncle Aragorn might not make it. He wants to see you one last time."
Nicholas was working at the NC Corporation when he received Paul's call. His mind went blank for a second before he responded.
"Okay." Nicholas replied.
After hanging up, Nicholas sat in his chair, unable to focus on the remaining documents, staring blankly into space.
Caroline also received a call from Paul.
"Caroline, Uncle Aragorn is not going to make it. He wants to see you," Paul added, "If you don't want to see him, you don't have to go."
"Okay, I understand." Caroline replied.
After hanging up, Caroline packed up her violin.
Caroline thought in mind, 'Nicholas would probably go to the hospital, right? Would he be sad?'
After all, Aragorn was his biological father. No matter how strained their relationship was when Aragorn was alive, Nicholas would still be sad after his death.
Caroline texted Nicholas to ask where he was, then went to the NC Corporation.
In the hospital, Aragorn stared intently at the door of the ward with cloudy eyes, filled with anticipation.
He knew he was about to die.
He wanted to reconcile with Nicholas in his final moments.
He felt guilty towards Nicholas; it was his fault that Nicholas lost his leg.
Gummidge sat crying beside him, and Ashley felt equally depressed.
When he heard footsteps outside the ward, Aragorn's eyes lit up.
But the next moment, it was Paul who walked in.
Paul said, "I've called Nicholas and Caroline. I'm not sure if they'll come."
Paul looked at the emaciated Aragorn lying there with an oxygen mask. The once strong-willed Aragorn had finally been defeated by the virus.
Although Aragorn had a strong desire to control Nicholas, he treated him well.
Of course, the main reason was that Aragorn couldn't control Paul.
The machine beeped, and Aragorn looked away in disappointment.
Aragorn thought in mind, 'Even at this moment, Nicholas still wouldn't come to see me?'
Aragorn closed his eyes in regret, preparing to fall into a deep sleep.
Tears slid down the corners of his eyes.
"Nicholas!" A voice of surprise came.
Aragorn, who had just closed his eyes, immediately opened them.
Nicholas, expressionless, maneuvered his wheelchair into the room, instantly alleviating the oppressive atmosphere.
He came to the bedside.
Aragorn, excited, tried to sit up, but his body had no strength left.
Gummidge cried, "Don't move, don't move."
Aragorn then lay back down, and the heart rate monitor showed a slight increase.
"Nicholas," Aragorn called out Nicholas's name with difficulty, reaching out to hold Nicholas's hand.
However, Nicholas did not reach out.
Aragorn could only withdraw his hand in regret.
Aragorn said, "I'm sorry, I was wrong."
"Where's Caroline?"
Scanning the room, Aragorn didn't see Caroline.
Aragorn said slowly, "It's okay, seeing you is enough. I won't stop you two anymore. Live a good, happy life together. Have a proper wedding. Don't let her suffer anymore. And give all my inheritance to Josie. Nicholas, I really know I was wrong. Can you forgive me?"
Nicholas listened quietly to Aragorn's intermittent words.
These words almost exhausted the last bit of Aragorn's strength.
The beeping of the machine became irregular.
Aragorn desperately wanted Nicholas's forgiveness, but Nicholas just looked at him, his lips tightly pressed together.
Outside the door, Caroline leaned against the wall.
Said she was heartless or said she cruel-hearted or she simply couldn't forgive Aragorn, who had once tried to kill her.
So she accompanied Nicholas but wouldn't go in to see Aragorn one last time.
Aragorn heard footsteps outside again and instinctively thought Caroline had arrived. He excitedly reached out, "Caroline, I'm sorry..."
As he finished his last words, the machine beeped rapidly and then turned into a continuous line.
Aragorn ultimately died in regret.
And he never heard Nicholas's forgiveness.
Nicholas's eyes quickly reddened. He wanted to speak but found he couldn't say anything. He wanted to cry, but his eyes were dry.
"Honey!" Gummidge threw herself onto Aragorn, crying.
Ashley also cried out in sorrow, "Aragorn."
Paul rubbed his nose, tears welling up in his eyes.
Hearing them crying, Caroline paused outside.
The news of Aragorn's death quickly spread to friends and family. Nicholas and Paul jointly prepared Aragorn's funeral.
Joseph, who was abroad, also received the news and prepared to return for the funeral.
"Nicholas, I don't want him to come back."
Nicholas hadn't slept all night, wearing a black suit with a white flower on his chest. He rubbed his temples.
"Then let's make sure he doesn't."
"But how?" Paul asked.
Nicholas replied, "I'll handle it."
While Nicholas was busy with the funeral, Caroline stayed at the hospital with Lisa and occasionally checked on Sharpe.
Since her high fever, Lisa's health had deteriorated, and she could only lie in bed, relying on medication to sustain her life.
Daniel and Linda visited her every day.
Seeing Caroline looking a bit haggard these past two days, Daniel and Linda felt very distressed.
"Caroline, I'll stay and take care of Lisa today. You should go home and rest," Linda said, handing Caroline a cup of warm water.
Caroline took it.
"I'm not tired. I want to spend more time with Lisa."
"Then I'll stay with you."
Linda insisted on staying, so in the evening, Daniel had to leave alone.
Around 8 p.m., Linda went out to buy something, leaving only Caroline and Lisa in the ward.
Lisa, struggling to keep her eyes open, held one of Caroline's hands with both of hers.
"Caroline."
"Yes, I'm here, Mom."
"You don't have to call me Mom anymore," Lisa said weakly.
Caroline replied, "You'll always be my mom."
Lisa said, "You should call Linda Mom now."
Caroline's tears fell.
Whenever Lisa had the energy these past two days, she would talk to her, as if giving her final instructions.
"I know you don't call her Mom because of me."
Linda had forgotten her phone and returned just in time to hear Lisa's words. Curious coincidence, she stopped at the door.
