Chapter 424 He Was Fine, She Was Not
Charles grew up in the countryside, losing his parents young and relying on relatives. With little education, he fell in with the wrong crowd as a teen and picked up bad habits, eventually landing in prison for excessive self-defense.
After his release, Charles faced rejection everywhere. Jobless and starving, he fainted on the roadside, where Nicholas found him. Nicholas gave him a job and taught him many skills.
To Charles, Nicholas was a savior, giving him a chance to live with dignity. Charles was fiercely loyal, willing to face danger for Nicholas.
Nicholas, in turn, valued Charles' loyalty and did everything to help him.
Paul and Nicholas went to the police station. The criminals were all foreigners and had escaped quickly, leaving only masks behind. Caroline, who had few acquaintances and no known enemies, was left shaken.
Caroline's friends were terrified and kept apologizing. She comforted them, feeling embarrassed.
Paul decided Caroline and Josie shouldn't stay in the small town anymore and took them to his place. The Thomas family was well-known, so with Paul around, Caroline felt safer.
"Why did you come to Country Y?" Paul asked Nicholas, curious. He had rushed over without asking questions when Nicholas called.
Nicholas looked at Caroline but didn't answer. Paul turned to Caroline. "Caroline?"
Caroline, unsure how to explain, was still shaken from the sudden move.
Seeing no response from either, Paul sighed and picked up Josie. "Josie, are your mom and dad fighting?"
Josie nodded.
"Did your mom take you and leave home?"
Josie looked confused, glancing at Caroline and Nicholas.
"Never mind, Josie. Let's go play."
Josie shook her head but was still taken outside by Paul.
With Lisa resting, only Caroline and Nicholas were left in the living room. Caroline didn't want to face Nicholas alone and made an excuse to go to the kitchen.
Nicholas looked down, hiding his sadness.
The kids played outside with Ruth, while Sophia video-called them daily. It had been raining continuously in City B, and the temperature had dropped.
Sophia woke up feeling a bit sick, with a congested nose and dizziness. She used a hot towel to ease the discomfort.
With the kids away, Sophia wasn't picky about food. She had some bread and milk before heading to work.
In the morning, Sophia felt groggy at work. She saw double on her computer screen, and her dizziness worsened.
By noon, she took some cold medicine and felt a bit better in the afternoon.
Around 3 PM, during a meeting, she started feeling sleepy again.
Gabriel leaned back in his chair, hands clasped, occasionally glancing at Sophia. His brows furrowed as he stared at her.
Suddenly, the room went quiet. Everyone looked at Gabriel, then followed his gaze to Sophia.
Alex cleared his throat to break the silence.
Gabriel, however, was still staring at Sophia and said with a hint of displeasure, "Continue!"
Everyone quickly looked away, and the speaker nervously resumed.
Half an hour later, the meeting ended, and everyone hurried out.
Gabriel stayed behind, still watching Sophia, noticing her pale and tired look.
"Ms. Kelly?" Lee walked over and called out to Sophia.
Gabriel's gaze remained fixed on Sophia, clearly unhappy with her daze. Lee, not sitting next to her, couldn't have reminded her.
Sophia snapped awake.
"Is it over?"
"Yes." Lee gestured towards Gabriel.
Sophia looked over and met Gabriel's gaze.
Gabriel's eyes softened with a smile. Sophia, however, shivered, got goosebumps, and quickly packed up, linking arms with Lee.
"Let's go."
Lee glanced cautiously at Gabriel, thinking, 'He doesn't seem angry?'
They hurried out!
Once outside, Lee patted her chest.
"That scared me. I thought Mr. Lancaster was going to scold you."
"I thought so too," Sophia replied.
"You don't look well today. Do you have a cold?"
"I'm a bit unwell."
"Then you should leave early. We'll handle the rest."
Sophia didn't leave early but insisted on finishing her work.
This made her half an hour late. When she got to the parking lot, she found Gabriel waiting.
He walked over, and Sophia stopped.
He placed his hand on her forehead and sighed in relief. At least she didn't have a fever.
Sophia took a step back.
"I'm going home."
Gabriel kindly reminded her, "Drive safely."
"Okay."
Sophia got home and received a message from Gabriel.
Gabriel: [If you're not feeling well tomorrow, don't come to work. Rest at home.]
Gabriel: [The kids would worry if they knew you were like this.]
Sophia: [Got it, thanks for your concern.]
She felt very unwell. After getting home, she felt worse and had no appetite. She went straight to bed without dinner.
Around 10 PM, Sophia developed a high fever.
In her drowsy state, she felt her head burning, with noise in her ears. She wanted to get up for fever medicine but didn't want to open her eyes. She just wanted to sleep, hoping the fever would be gone by morning.
Sophia hugged the blanket tightly, sweating but unwilling to uncover herself, thinking sweating it out might help.
She really didn't want to move.
"Sophia?" someone called out.
"Wake up, Sophia, take the medicine."
'Who is it? So noisy.' Sophia frowned, barely opening her eyes to see a familiar handsome face.
Something was being put into her mouth.
