Chapter 417 Find Out Where Caroline Was
Nicholas' warm gaze turned icy in an instant.
"Is this all you wanted to discuss?"
Caroline replied coldly, "I'm Josie's mom. I'll teach her violin myself. This contract is void, and the penalty fees are in this bank card."
Nicholas gripped the armrest, veins bulging on his hand.
He stared at Caroline, silent.
Feeling the chill from his gaze, Caroline had said her piece and paid what she owed. She grabbed her cane and headed to her room.
"I'll move out tomorrow. Don't send anyone to watch me. I've also taken Lisa out of the nursing home. I'm not your employee anymore, so I don't need your benefits."
Nicholas spoke in a low, strained voice, "Do you really want to leave me?"
"Yes!"
The room fell silent. Caroline stood a short distance away, confirming without hesitation when she heard his hoarse voice.
She was exhausted, too tired to keep fighting.
That single "yes" cut Nicholas deeply.
His lips moved, but his throat tightened, rendering him speechless. He wanted to beg her to stay but couldn't find the words.
Her resolve to leave was clear.
He had known this.
But he still tried everything to keep her.
And she tried everything to escape.
Caroline returned to her room, tears streaming down her face.
Their once tightly bound hearts had shattered long ago. Trying to mend them now was painful and futile.
The next day, Nicholas buried himself in the lab, focusing on new drug development to numb his wounded heart.
He didn't know the Watsons was secretly transferring Josie's custody to Caroline and planning for them to go abroad.
Meanwhile, Sophia drove Caroline and Josie to the airport.
"Josie, listen to your mom from now on." Sophia knelt, handed Josie an envelope of money, and gave her a doll. "Emma wanted you to have this. If you miss her, hug the doll and talk to it like it's her."
Josie nodded.
"Sophia."
Caroline hugged her.
Time was short, so she took Josie to the waiting area.
A family of three passed by, and Caroline saw Josie looking enviously at the girl with her dad.
Her heart ached, and she hugged Josie tightly, holding back tears.
"I'm sorry, Josie."
She felt like a failure as a mother, depriving Josie of a father.
But she couldn't stay. For Josie's sake, she couldn't ruin Daisy and Nicholas, and Josie would suffer a bad reputation.
She couldn't leave Josie with Nicholas and Daisy either. Daisy would mistreat her, especially now that she was pregnant.
Josie cupped Caroline's cheeks, pressing her forehead against hers. "Mom, you haven't wronged me. I know you're unhappy with Dad. I'll stay with you, okay?"
Caroline couldn't hold back and hugged Josie, crying.
Lisa, standing aside, was at a loss. She wanted to comfort them but didn't know how, so she just hugged Caroline and gently patted her back.
Passersby stared, but Caroline didn't care. She just needed to let it all out.
"Ms. Clark," a voice called out.
Caroline looked up, her eyes swollen.
A stranger stood before her.
She quickly shielded Josie.
"Don't worry. Mr. Aragorn Watson sent me to see you off."
Caroline sneered.
'Is Aragorn worried I'll back out?'
She didn't refuse.
Under the man's watchful eye, they boarded the plane to Country M.
The man watched the plane take off and called Aragorn.
Aragorn nodded and sent a message.
Aragorn: [Proceed as planned.]
Sharpe paced outside the lab, anxious.
"How much longer for Mr. Watson?"
"The experiment's at a critical stage. Another four hours," the security guard said.
Sharpe frowned.
After a while, he said, "Get Charles out here."
The guard hesitated but went to get Charles.
Charles came out after a bit.
"Charles, tell Mr. Watson that Ms. Clark signed a reconciliation agreement forgiving Mia. Mia's been bailed out."
"Got it."
Charles went back in. Nicholas was deep in discussion with some researchers. Charles stood silently behind him.
Two hours later, Charles found a moment to relay Sharpe's message.
Nicholas nodded slightly, still focused on the research data. After ten seconds, he crumpled the paper in his hand.
"You guys handle the rest and give me a result." Nicholas left this instruction and had Charles push him out.
The others looked at each other, confused.
Sharpe was still waiting and finally saw Nicholas come out.
"Mr. Watson, Molly said Ms. Clark took Josie out and hasn't come back yet."
Nicholas' face darkened.
"Find out where Caroline is."
"Yes!"
Nicholas' phone rang. It was the Watson family.
"Nicholas, come back now. Your father was taken ill again," Gummidge choked out.
After seeing Caroline off, Sophia found her car's rear tire flat.
Driving like that would be dangerous.
Jake texted her, and Sophia vented a bit.
Sophia: [Bad luck, my tire's flat.]
Jake: [Where are you?]
Sophia: [Airport.]
She called for a tow truck. No spare tire, and she didn't know how to change it.
After hanging up, she saw Jake had sent several messages.
Jake: [Wait there. I'm close to the airport. I'll be there soon.]
Sophia had no choice but to wait in her car for Jake.
They arrived almost simultaneously.
The car was towed, and Sophia got into Jake's car.
"Picking me up won't mess up your plans, right?" Sophia asked.
"No."
Jake was secretly pleased. Helping Sophia was worth any delay.
"It's almost noon. Want to grab lunch?"
Sophia checked her watch. "Sure, you pick the place."
The car suddenly swerved, and Sophia grabbed the handle, surprised.
"What's wrong?"
Jake's face was serious. "Something's off about the car behind us."
There weren't many cars on the highway, so Jake noticed a suspicious van tailing them.
He had just finished speaking when his expression changed.
