Chapter 452 Burned
Caroline and Nicholas wrote this piece when they were in love, making it perfect for the occasion.
The couple at the engagement party seemed to really enjoy it too.
The music instantly made everyone feel the warmth and happiness of love.
Nicholas remembered those days when she was at the music academy, and he was at business school. He often visited the music academy because of his passion for the subject, and even joined a club. That was where he met Caroline and becamecaptivated by her violin playing.
They got to know each other, fell in love, composed music together, and performed together. She played the violin, and he accompanied her on the piano.
They were so carefree and joyful, happy and sweet, until it all fell apart.
When Caroline finished the piece, someone started clapping, and soon everyone joined in.
The engaged couple approached Caroline. "Could you play another piece for us?"
Caroline saw their happy faces and nodded with a smile.
The couple seemed to really enjoy the violin and stood close to listen.
After another piece, a waiter brought Caroline a glass of wine.
"Thank you, Ms. Clark, for playing such beautiful music for us today. This is for you."
Caroline quickly took it. "I also wish you happiness and joy."
"When my friend recommended you, I didn't know it was you," the woman said, surprised.
Caroline smiled and chatted with her for a bit.
"Ms. Clark, please stay and enjoy some food and fun before you leave."
"Okay," Caroline agreed.
"Ms. Clark, we need to attend to the guests over there. Please make yourself at home."
"Alright."
After they left, Caroline was about to find something to eat when she saw Nicholas not far away.
Behind him was Sharpe, and two men were talking to him, but he responded rather coldly, looking out of place in the otherwise joyful atmosphere.
Caroline took a plate, put some cake on it, and looked for a place to sit quietly.
Just as she sat down, someone else sat beside her. "Ms. Clark."
Caroline turned and saw a face that looked much older than she remembered, and she was slightly surprised.
The last time she saw Daniel was at Daisy's wedding. Daniel had been gentlemanly, elegant, and well-groomed, and his face showed no wrinkles unless he smiled.
But now, Daniel's face looked weary. It made her wonder if something major had happened to the Wolf family.
However, Caroline felt no goodwill toward the Wolf family and wasn't interested in their affairs. She didn't want to interact with Daniel either.
She feared that Daniel had approached her because of Daisy. Caroline moved aside and silently ate her cake.
Caroline's actions embarrassed Daniel. Her aloofness made him reconsider the words he wanted to say. He was rarely treated so coldly and felt a bit uncomfortable.
Caroline took a bite of the cake, and thinking that Daniel had helped her at the wedding, felt it wasn't right to treat him this way.
"Mr. Wolf, if you have something to say, just say it," she said, to ease Daniel's embarrassment.
Daniel let out a light sigh of relief.
"Ms. Clark, your violin playing is excellent. I also love musical instruments, so I appreciate those who play them well."
So, Daniel was saying he admired her? Caroline frowned slightly.
Daniel was a seasoned businessman, always hiding his emotions and thoughts. She couldn't read him at all. She had no idea what he wanted.
"It's like this: I have a friend who loves musical instruments. His birthday is coming up, and I want to invite you to play 'Happy Birthday' for him as a gift from me. Would that be possible?"
Daniel hastily came up with an excuse. He found it hard to just ask Caroline to donate bone marrow to his daughter.
If it were anyone else, he wouldn't even hesitate, but this was Caroline. She had conflicts with Daisy and a lot of hatred towards the Wolf family. He knew Caroline would definitely refuse.
Hearing his words, Caroline was very surprised.
Daniel was offering her a job?
Could it be one of Daisy's schemes?
Did Daisy think sending him to talk to her would make her agree?
No, she didn't want anything to do with the Wolf family.
She feared for her life.
Without thinking, Caroline refused, "I'm sorry, I'm very busy and might not have the time."
Daniel didn't push. "That's okay. Maybe next time."
Caroline didn't know how to respond, so she just focused on eating her cake.
Daniel didn't leave immediately. He watched Caroline eat. She was eating quickly, but it was somehow pleasing to the eye. Seeing that she seemed to choke, Daniel quickly handed her some juice and instinctively reached out to pat her back.
It was as if he was taking care of his own child.
"Eat the cake slowly; it's easy to choke," he said, his voice softer than usual.
Caroline paused, feeling a strange sensation in her heart.
She looked at Daniel curiously and moved aside again.
Daniel realized his actions were a bit abrupt and quickly withdrew his hand, coughing lightly to cover his embarrassment.
"Sorry, you're about the same age as my daughter. I suddenly thought of her. Excuse me, I need to go talk to someone over there. Enjoy the food."
Daniel quickly got up and left. At that moment, he really felt like he was treating her like his own daughter.
Caroline finished her cake and saw that it was getting late. Remembering that Josie was still at Sophie's house, she decided to leave, but she hadn't had a chance to say goodbye to the couple.
Suddenly, someone rushed over.
"Caroline, you shameless whore! You ruined someone else's family. You'll pay for that!"
Everyone was shocked and turned to look.
A woman with a twisted face rushed over, holding a cup. Her aggressive demeanor made people instinctively think the cup contained acid.
Caroline was also frightened. "Who are you? I don't know you!"
"Of course, you don't know me. You know my husband. You ruined my family. I lost my husband, and my child no longer has a father. Today, I will make you pay.
"Your face is a curse. I will destroy it to uphold justice and see if you dare to seduce other people's husbands again!"
With that, she threw the contents of the cup at Caroline's face.
Caroline recoiled in horror. Sharpe, under Nicholas' orders, rushed over, but they were too far from Caroline, and there were too many people around.
They watched helplessly as the liquid was about to hit Caroline.
At that moment, a figure rushed out, blocking the cup with one hand and pulling her away with the other.
The sound of acid burning flesh echoed in Caroline's ears.
Daniel frowned deeply and quickly took off his coat, but his arm was still burned.
