Chapter 574 No Need for Sympathy
Madison burst out the door, waving a stick like she was ready to whack Gabriel and Alex outta there.
"I don't care why you're here, just get outta my house!"
Alex jumped in front of Gabriel and took the hit from Madison's stick. Madison froze, totally shocked.
She didn't actually mean to hit anyone.
Alex winced, rubbing his arm. "Mrs. Fisher, we're just here to get to the bottom of things. Your husband's case got all messed up. The real killer might not be Francis, but someone else. If you kick us out, we'll never find the truth."
"Do you really want the real killer to walk free?"
Madison gripped the stick tighter.
Sierra tugged at her mom's sleeve.
"Mom, I think this guy's got a point."
Ten minutes later, they were all sitting down.
Madison still looked pissed but wasn't kicking them out anymore. Alex put the gifts they brought on the table.
"Ask whatever you wanna ask."
So many years had passed, and the original killer was already dead. Madison just wanted to live a quiet life with Sierra, so she thought of getting rid of Gabriel and Alex quickly.
Sierra brought a glass of water for Gabriel and Alex.
"Sierra, go to your room and do your homework."
Sierra shook her head, "I wanna listen too."
"You're just a kid, what do you need to know?"
Sierra shot back, "I'm grown up now, I'm about to go to college."
Madison wanted to argue more but seeing Gabriel and Alex there, she let it slide.
Sierra looked at Gabriel with stars in her eyes.
In her head, Sierra was screaming, 'Oh my God, Gabriel, the famous guy, is actually in my house!'
Gabriel's brows furrowed a bit, his lips parted. "Mrs. Fisher, I'm sorry, but could you give us a quick rundown of what you know about that incident?"
Madison thought for a moment and said, "Back then, the Kelly Group's project had an accident, and all the blame fell on Francis and my husband. I only know that Francis came to our house to find my husband, and then my husband died, with only Francis's fingerprints at the scene."
Gabriel asked again, "Think hard, was there anything else weird at that time?"
Madison shook her head.
Gabriel's brows furrowed even more. He asked a few more questions, but Madison had already spilled everything she knew, the rest she didn't know.
This time, Gabriel got zilch.
Madison didn't know what Peter was up to behind the scenes, she just thought Peter was a bit off.
Sierra listened carefully on the side, her eyes flickering.
When Peter had his accident, she was less than ten years old, still at an age where she didn't get much beyond eating, drinking, and playing. At that time, she only knew Peter was killed, and she would never have a dad again.
So, she also hated the person who killed Peter.
Now Sierra was about to enter college and got a hang of that incident.
Madison and Gabriel's words got her thinking..
As night fell and they got nothing, Gabriel got up to leave.
"Wait, take this stuff back with you." Madison handed back the things they brought to Alex.
Gabriel gave Alex a look, and Alex got the message.
Gabriel left straight away, while Alex and Madison pushed the stuff back and forth for a bit, finally leaving the stuff and running off.
Madison went back to the kitchen to finish cooking.
While they were eating, Sierra suddenly said, "Mom, I also think there's something fishy about Dad's death. The killer might really be someone else."
Madison scooped some food onto Sierra's plate and said, "Just eat your dinner, kiddo. Don't stress about that stuff. Focus on your studies, get into a good college, and be more successful than your dad ever was."
Sierra wasn't letting it go. "I'm serious, Mom. I've been thinking a lot about what Mr. Lancaster said today. Even though I was young, I remember some things pretty clearly."
"Before Dad's accident, there was another guy who was always around Dad. I remember on the day of the accident, besides Francis, that guy also came to see Dad."
Madison's fork clattered onto the table, and she stared at Sierra, wide-eyed.
"What did you just say?"
The cops had talked to Sierra back then, but she was just a crying mess and couldn't say anything useful.
On the day of the incident, Sierra had a fever, and Peter was at home taking care of her. At first, she was awake and saw Francis come to see Peter. Because Peter wanted to talk to Francis, she went back to her room to sleep.
Later, she woke up groggily, got up to find water on the nightstand, and in those two minutes of drinking water, she vaguely heard a familiar male voice outside.
That voice wasn't Francis but a man who often contacted Peter.
At that time, she was a bit delirious from the fever and was too young, so she thought it was just a dream.
To this day, she still occasionally dreams of that scene.
If Gabriel hadn't come and asked about that, she might have always thought of it as a strange dream.
Sierra thought deeply and fearfully.
After hearing her out, Madison's expression changed. She lovingly patted Sierra's head.
"Don't overthink this anymore, focus on your studies."
Sierra nodded, "I get it, Mom. But if you think there's something fishy about Dad's death, please work with Mr. Lancaster to reinvestigate."
"Okay."
The next day, Madison found the business card and called Gabriel.
Diana showed up at school to find Caroline again.
"Caroline, I gotta treat you to dinner tonight." Diana linked arms with Caroline like they were besties. "Since I have your bone marrow, we're practically sisters now."
Caroline tried to pull her hand back, but Diana held on tight.
"Miss Scott, I've told you, you don't owe me anything."
She really didn't want to have anything to do with the Wolfs.
Caroline thought, 'Why don't these people get it?'
Even though Diana was sincere and grateful, leaving her alone was the best way to repay her.
Diana pouted, "Caroline, I just feel really close to you, like you're my sister."
She lowered her head. "I grew up in an orphanage, without siblings. The kids there didn't really get close to me. Later, when I was about ten, I was adopted by my current foster parents, but they only have me."
"I really want a sister."
Caroline refused, "You don't need to. You're now a member of the Wolfs. You have biological parents who love you, a brother, and a sister. You're already very fortunate."
Diana interrupted, "But you have nothing."
That hit Caroline right in the feels.
Caroline mused, 'Yeah, I have nothing. No, wait, I have Josie!'
Caroline smiled, "I'm not as lucky as you to be found by my biological parents, but I have a daughter now, and I have Lisa. I'm happy."
She didn't need Diana's sympathy.
