Chapter 763 Want to Eat

The atmosphere fell into silence.

Clara fell asleep while lying down.

Alex could only hear the sound of her gentle breathing in the ward. Alex checked the time and prepared to leave.

As he turned, he noticed her blanket wasn't properly covering her.

He paused for a moment, then gently adjusted the blanket over her and set the room's air conditioning to a comfortable temperature.

When Clara woke up, Alex was already gone.

"What a pity, I have a broken bone and can't move, otherwise I'd have taken you down tonight!"

Clara muttered, pressing the call button to have the nurse's aide help her to the bathroom.

Today's hospital visit lost time, so Alex finished his remaining work at home before resting.

As soon as he lay down, he fell asleep immediately.

He always slept well, falling asleep quickly and without dreams.

However, tonight he had a dream he hadn't had since he was a teenager, after accidentally watching a porn film with classmates.

Opening his eyes, Alex stared at the ceiling, lost in deep thought.

Maybe he really should find a girlfriend.

After washing up, Alex made a simple breakfast and ate while checking the morning news on his phone.

Suddenly, a message popped up on Facebook from his college classmate Angela White.

Angela had asked for his help with something a while back and now wanted to treat him to a meal as thanks.

Alex initially wanted to decline but then remembered he had just thought about finding a girlfriend.

If he remembered correctly, someone had mentioned at a recent class reunion that Angela was single.

'It had only been two months; she probably hadn't found a boyfriend yet, right?' Alex thought.

Alex: [Sure, you pick the restaurant.]

Angela sent back an OK emoji.

Clara was bored to death in the hospital. Her mother was traveling, her father was on a business trip, and she was truly alone with only the nurse's aide for company.

Out of sheer boredom, she messaged Alex.

Alex didn't reply!

Clara refused to give up and kept sending messages.

She sent fifty messages in a row and then stopped.

After his meeting, Alex saw the fifty Facebook messages from Clara and wondered if something had happened to her.

He quickly opened them, only to find fifty identical emojis.

Alex was speechless.

Alex: [Miss Taylor, is there something you need?]

Clara finally got a reply from Alex but didn't want to respond immediately. She stared at the message for a long time until Alex sent another one.

Alex: [I was just in a meeting and didn't notice the messages.]

Clara smirked: [I miss you.]

She quickly retracted it and replaced it with, [Sorry, typo. I meant I'm hungry.]

When Alex saw the [I miss you] message, he was stunned, and his heart skipped a beat.

But then he saw Clara had retracted the message, followed by her explanation.

Clara: [I want food from a specific restaurant. Can you get it for me? They don't deliver.]

Alex: [I still have work to do. Ask someone else to get it for you.]

Clara's eyes widened.

She wondered, 'By now, Alex still hadn't figured out my feelings for him? Or does he know but just isn't interested in me?'

Clara stared at Alex's message, lost in thought.

Seeing no reply from Clara, Alex put his phone down, but he felt distracted while working on his computer.

A few minutes later, Alex grabbed his car keys.

Fifty minutes later, Clara heard footsteps approaching and thought the nurse's aide had returned.

"Just put it on the table."

The footsteps came closer.

"Here's your food."

Clara looked up sharply, surprised. "Didn't you say you had work?"

Alex coughed lightly, a bit embarrassed.

"Mrs. Lancaster asked me to take care of you, so I had to push back my work."

Clara didn't believe this excuse, but regardless, Alex had come, which meant he had some interest in her.

It seemed that once she was discharged, she could finally win him over.

Alex wasn't lying; Ruth had indeed asked him to visit Clara more often and see if she needed any help.

Clara had a good relationship with the Lancaster Family, so Ruth's request was understandable.

Alex didn't think much of it.

He delivered the food to Clara but didn't have lunch himself and then returned to the office.

He didn't have time for lunch because he had a meeting as soon as the afternoon started.

That evening, Alex had dinner plans with Angela. He left work on time and drove to pick her up.

"Sorry, my car is in for maintenance, so I had to ask you to pick me up," Angela explained as she got in the car.

Alex replied, "No problem, it was on the way."

Angela and Alex arrived at a nice restaurant.

Angela was an executive at a publicly traded company, competent and career-driven, so she delayed her marriage. Now that her career was stable, she was also looking for a boyfriend.

She had heard that Alex was still single from their classmates, which sparked her interest.

So, she attended a class reunion which she usually wouldn't go to and successfully added Alex on Facebook under the pretext of discussing business.

Later, she found an excuse to ask for his help.

Tonight, Angela finally had the chance to treat him to dinner.

Angela was a bit nervous. After ordering, they started talking about the current economic environment.

Her phone on the table kept vibrating. Alex gave Angela an apologetic look, and Angela paused the conversation, sipping her water while he checked his messages.

Alex opened his phone to find more Facebook messages from Clara.

He asked her what was up.

Clara: [I'm so hungry.]

Alex: [Didn't the nurse's aide get you food?]

Clara: [The nurse's aide is on leave.]

Alex: [I'll order you some takeout.]

Clara: [I don't want anything from nearby.]

Alex: [What do you want to eat then?]

Clara: [The same restaurant as before.]

Alex frowned. He was currently near that restaurant, but it was a half-hour drive to the hospital.

He was having dinner with Angela and couldn't just leave.

Alex: [Eat something for now. I'll bring it to you later.]

After replying, Alex put his phone down.

It was impolite to be on his phone for too long.

Clara didn't send any more messages.

But Alex found himself thinking about whether Clara was still hungry while he ate.

A girl from a wealthy family like Clara probably had never gone hungry.

Her parents were out of town, and the nurse's aide was on leave. Could she manage on her own?

"Alex?"

Hearing Angela call his name, Alex looked at her, puzzled.

Angela asked, "Is something wrong?"

She had noticed his distraction.

Alex shook his head. "Nothing, just thinking about some work stuff."

Angela smiled gracefully. "It's after hours. Put work aside and enjoy the meal."

"Okay."

As they were finishing up, Alex said he needed to use the restroom.

Angela's eyes sparkled slightly.

Sure enough, when he returned, Alex had already paid the bill.

Angela said, embarrassed, "I said I'd treat, but you paid again. Next time, you can't do this."

Alex said, "Alright."

They walked to the parking lot side by side.

"Angela, let me call you a cab."

"What?"

"I have something to take care of and can't drive you home."

Angela assumed it was work-related and immediately understood.

"No problem, I'll get a cab myself. You go ahead."

Alex apologized, "Sorry about this. I'll treat you next time to make up for it."

"It's fine."

Alex checked the time; it was already 8:30 p.m.!
