Chapter 688 Strategy

After that day, Aragorn made it a point to show up at the office every single day.

He didn't do much, couldn't really do much, but he just had to be there. Aragorn would hang out in the office for a couple of hours or sometimes the whole day, then head back to the hospital.

Nicholas often dodged him, avoiding any face-to-face encounters.

Caroline had been crashing at The Wolf Mansion for a bit and was itching to get back to her own place.

Daniel and Linda weren't having it and kept coming up with all sorts of reasons to keep her around.

"Mr. Watson is here," the servant announced.

Daniel's face immediately soured at the news.

"Don't let him in," Daniel grumbled.

Linda glanced at Caroline, then gave Daniel a reassuring pat. "It's almost over."

She turned to the servant and said, "Let him in."

Daniel was fuming but knew it wasn't fair to take it all out on Nicholas. The real threat to Caroline was Aragorn. He'd heard Aragorn was pretty sick now but still insisted on going to the company every day to keep things in check.

Daniel thought, 'That guy Aragorn still thinks he can run the show.'

Nicholas rolled in, pushing a wheelchair loaded with four bags.

This time, Sharpe didn't tag along.

Nicholas's usually cold and distant face softened a bit, and a small smile crept in.

"Mr. Wolf, Mrs. Wolf," he said, stepping forward and handing one of the bags to Daniel. "This is for you."

Daniel didn't take it, so Linda gave him a little pinch.

Grimacing, Daniel reluctantly accepted it.

"And this is for Mrs. Wolf."

Linda took it, looking pleasantly surprised.

Linda really liked Nicholas. He was handsome, successful, and a great match for Caroline.

Of course, the best part was that Caroline liked Nicholas too.

Caroline was taken aback that Nicholas brought gifts for her parents. 'What's he up to?' she wondered.

Linda opened her gift and found a set of elegant, expensive jewelry.

"This is a limited edition set. I tried so hard to get it before but couldn't. How did you manage? It must've been a lot of work," Linda said, clearly thrilled.

Nicholas replied modestly, "I'm just glad you like it."

Linda was over the moon and noticed Daniel still looking grumpy, so she pinched him again.

"Aren't you going to open your gift and check it out?"

Daniel had no choice but to take it out and look. He was instantly captivated.

He loved collecting antique paintings, and Nicholas had given him a rare one.

Daniel's expression softened considerably.

Caroline noticed that Nicholas's gifts were rare and perfectly suited for Daniel and Linda. It was obvious he had put a lot of thought into them.

She suddenly felt that Nicholas really valued her.

Nicholas wasn't giving gifts to Daniel and Linda to suck up to them but because they were her parents, and he wanted their approval.

Lisa had been feeling under the weather and was resting in her room, so Nicholas handed Lisa's gift to Caroline.

He also gave Clayton's gift to Linda.

'So everyone gets a gift, but not me?' Caroline wondered silently.

Seeing no more gift bags on Nicholas's wheelchair, she felt a bit let down.

Nicholas seemed to read her mind. He smiled and pulled out an invitation, handing it to Caroline.

"The new company is having a ribbon-cutting ceremony the day after tomorrow. We sincerely invite the boss, Caroline, to attend."

Caroline thought, 'Oh right, Nicholas already gave me a company.'

Caroline's little bit of disappointment vanished in an instant.

She took the invitation, noticing a tiny diamond on the seal that sparkled.

Nicholas stayed for dinner, and Daniel, showing some rare hospitality, pulled out a bottle of aged wine and had a few drinks with him.

Meanwhile, Linda pulled Caroline aside for a private chat.

"Caroline, you should stay home with Josie and Lisa. Your dad won't stop Nicholas from seeing you anymore. Look how happy he is now. He actually approves of Nicholas for you."

"If you stay home, Josie will be well taken care of, and Lisa, who isn't in great shape, also needs care. We have a family doctor who can check on Lisa every week."

Linda kept trying to persuade Caroline.

Caroline was a bit hesitant. Living at The Wolf Mansion had its perks. Daniel and Linda pampered her, and Clayton played with Josie every day, filling the house with laughter.

Lisa was also well taken care of.

"Of course, if you still want to go back, that's okay. I respect your choice."

Linda didn't want to pressure Caroline and was ready to let it go, albeit reluctantly.

"Okay, I'll stay home."

Linda was surprised. "Really?"

"Yes."

Linda excitedly hugged Caroline. If they weren't still at the dinner table, she would have totally jumped up and down with excitement.

Daniel and Nicholas were talking about work, and as they talked, they drank a few more glasses of wine.

Gradually, they both got drunk.

Linda took Daniel back to his room to rest. Daniel mumbled, "Isn't Nicholas a good drinker? How did he get drunk with just this much?"

He had seen Nicholas hold his liquor and knew it was better than his.

Daniel found it strange, but under the influence of alcohol, his brain couldn't think, so he let Linda help him to the bedroom to rest.

Nicholas was lying on the dining table. Caroline walked over.

"Nicholas?"

Nicholas turned his head, lying on his side, with half of his face exposed. His cheeks were flushed, and his eyes were closed, with eyelashes like feathers.

Caroline took out her phone and called Sharpe.

Sharpe said, "I'm still out handling some matters. Could you please arrange a room for Mr. Watson to rest?"

Caroline was silent and thought, 'Such a familiar tactic.'

She even wondered if Nicholas was really drunk.

Linda, having settled Daniel, came downstairs and saw Nicholas still lying there.

"Caroline, quickly take Nicholas to the guest room to rest. It's not good for his neck to lie there."

Caroline had no choice but to push the wheelchair and take Nicholas to the guest room.

She looked at the bed and then at Nicholas, saying irritably, "I can't move you. Should I find someone to help you onto the bed?"

Nicholas opened his eyes, the smile in them carrying a hint of intoxication.

"You really aren't drunk," Caroline said, hitting him in frustration.

Nicholas grabbed her hand. "I am drunk, my head is spinning."

Caroline tried to ignore him.

Nicholas held her hand and wouldn't let go. "I want to sleep. I haven't been able to sleep for many days without you."

"Why sleep during the day?"

"I'm drunk."

Nicholas's face still had a flush of drunkenness, and the faint smell of alcohol lingered around, making Caroline feel like she was getting drunk too.

She bent down to help Nicholas.

Nicholas used her strength and the wheelchair to slowly stand up.

He had been following Simon's advice and doing rehabilitation exercises. He could now stand steadily.

But as soon as he tried to take a step, he would still fall weakly.
