Chapter 578 Photos

The next day, Caroline's face was still a bit puffy. When Josie saw it, she gently touched her mom's cheek.

"Mom, did someone hit you?"

Caroline kissed Josie's chubby cheek.

"Nah, sweetie. Mom just took a little tumble yesterday. No biggie, the swelling will go down in a couple of days."

"Mom, you're so clumsy."

Caroline chuckled, "Guess I’m as clumsy as you, Josie."

They were goofing around when Nicholas rolled out and saw them being all lovey-dovey. His heart melted, and he wheeled himself over.

"Dad!" Josie ran to Nicholas as soon as she spotted him.

Nicholas scooped her up and plopped her on his lap.

These days, his legs weren't totally numb; he could feel a bit of weight when Josie sat on him.

Nicholas and Josie rubbed their foreheads together.

Caroline watched them, feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

This was the life she had always dreamed of, but...

She looked at Nicholas and Josie, noticing that Josie was looking more and more like Nicholas.

Before, she thought Josie was a fifty-fifty mix of them both. Now, Josie seemed way more like Nicholas, maybe like a seventy-thirty split.

After breakfast, Nicholas took Josie to school. Caroline looked at her face and decided to take the day off since she only had one class.

Going to class with a face like this would definitely make her the center of attention.

"Chill at home today. If any of the Wolfs come bugging you, just kick 'em out."

Before leaving, Nicholas reminded Caroline, still worried.

Caroline replied, "Got it, no worries."

Early in the morning, Paul was already lounging in Nicholas's office with his legs crossed. When he saw Nicholas come in, he leaned back on the couch.

"Nicholas, how's Caroline?"

Nicholas answered, "She's fine."

"Did you comfort Caroline all night?" Paul asked with a smirk, noticing the faint dark circles under Nicholas's eyes.

Nicholas shot him a look and ignored him, heading straight to his desk to check out the documents on it.

Paul, bored, pulled out his phone to play a game.

Suddenly, Clayton sent a message.

Clayton: [Dude, you won't BELIEVE what I just overheard!]

Paul wasn't interested in Clayton's so-called secret and ignored it.

Clayton: [Bro, just heard from my mom that Diana is crushing on YOU! And apparently, Diana admitted it!]

"Shit!" Paul cursed loudly as he died in his game.

Paul angrily exited the game and opened Clayton's chat.

Paul: [What's Diana got to do with anything? You made me lose the game!]

Clayton thought to himself that it was clearly Paul's poor skills.

Clayton: [Dude, this is getting out of hand - apparently my mom caught wind of this whole thing and now she's scheming with your mom about arranging a freakin' engagement. For real! Your mom's gone full-on Diana's biggest fan. What is happening?]

Paul sent a "sneering" emoji.

After a while, Clayton sent a photo with ill intentions.

Clayton: [Check this out - a blast from Diana's past! Mom's been holding onto this picture for ages, just showed it to Diana and everything. Pretty cute, right? What do you think of your future wife back in the day?]

Paul cursed in his heart, thinking she wasn't cute at all, with barely any hair on her head.

"Who's that?"

A voice suddenly came from beside him, almost making Paul drop his phone.

"Nicholas, can you make some noise when you move?" Paul said, then realized he had misspoken since Nicholas couldn't walk.

Nicholas didn't mind. He pointed at the photo on Paul's phone and asked, "Who's that?"

It was an old, grainy photo, but you could still make out the details. It showed a girl under two years old with sparse hair tied in two pigtails, wearing a cute princess dress and holding a lollipop.

Paul glanced at it disdainfully. "Clayton said this is a photo of Diana when she was little, probably taken before she went missing. Doesn't she look ugly?"

"Clayton also said Diana likes me." Paul shuddered. "Totally not her type."

"She looks so weak. I didn't dislike her before, but after what happened last night, I have no good feelings for her. Clayton is just trying to disgust me."

Paul kept complaining.

Nicholas, however, stared at the photo, lost in thought.

He flashed back to Josie as a kid, before she turned two—all bright eyes and spindly limbs. Looking at it this way, Josie and the girl in the photo looked very alike.

"Nicholas?" Paul noticed Nicholas was entranced.

Nicholas snapped out of it and tossed the document in his hand to Paul.

"The thing you asked me to find last time, take a look."

Paul quickly put away his phone and happily picked up the document.

"Nicholas, you're the best." Paul praised as he looked through the document, then got up to leave, not forgetting to compliment Nicholas.

Paul didn't take Linda's plan to talk to Aragorn about his engagement with Diana seriously.

Aragorn couldn't force him.

Not even his biological father could.

During lunch break, Nicholas went to Caroline's house again.

Since Nicholas came every day, Josie had secretly given him the house's password, so Nicholas could quietly enter.

Caroline was taking a nap at this time. Nicholas intended to quietly check on her but ended up seeing Lisa.

Lisa was startled.

Nicholas awkwardly explained, "I came to check on Caroline."

Lisa nodded, indicating she got it.

She went to the kitchen to pour herself a glass of water and was about to go back to her room to rest.

At this moment, Nicholas called out to her.

"Can I talk to you?"

Lisa went back to the kitchen and got some water for Nicholas as well.

"Do you have any photos of Caroline when she was little?" Nicholas asked directly, then added, "Around two years old."

Lisa shook her head gently. "No, only have some from when she was a teenager."

She asked, puzzled, "Why do you suddenly want to see her photos from when she was two?"

Nicholas thought for a moment. Lisa wasn Caroline's adoptive mother, and she knew Caroline well.

"This morning, I saw a photo of a little girl who looks a lot like Josie. She should be under two years old. Josie is my and Caroline's child. I can confirm that she doesn't look me, so is it possible that the little girl is related to Caroline?"

"Could she be Caroline's sister?"

Lisa's pupils dilated upon hearing this.

"Are you sure you didn't see it wrong?"

Nicholas answered firmly, "I wouldn't mistake it."

It weighed heavily on Lisa's mind. She frowned. "Caroline's childhood photos were all lost. She didn't like taking photos back then, and the orphanage couldn't afford to take photos of them every year, so there are no photos of her as a child."
