Chapter 694 A Spark Ignites a Prairie Fire
Sophia yanked her hand back, cursing under her breath. She'd forgotten to lock the car door, and now Gabriel was in her face.
"Get out!" she snapped.
Gabriel frowned but kept his eyes on her. "I'm not leaving," he said, tightening his grip on her hand.
They argued, and Sophia winced from the pain. "You're hurting me," she said, her voice strained.
Gabriel let go immediately. "Sorry, I didn't mean to."
Still fuming, Sophia wiped her tears away. "Get out!" she repeated, her voice icy.
Gabriel panicked at her cold demeanor. "I'm not leaving," he insisted. He knew if he got out, she'd drive off and he might never see her again.
He reached for her hand again, but she pulled away, thinking of the woman she'd seen leaving his office. Her anger flared.
"What do you want?" she demanded. "Gabriel, I'm begging you. Stop messing with me."
Tears streamed down her face, and Gabriel was taken aback. He remembered Alex saying Sophia had misunderstood him and Miss Taylor.
"Sophie, listen to me," he said, trying to stay calm.
"No need to explain, Gabriel. You've hurt me before, and I almost didn't make it. I can't go through that again. Please, let me go."
Sophia's emotions were all over the place. She leaned on the steering wheel, sobbing.
Gabriel's heart broke with each of her cries. He wanted to comfort her but was afraid of making things worse.
Her behavior was so unlike her usual self. Was her depression acting up again?
Gabriel's face went pale. He leaned over, holding her shoulders gently. "I'm not messing with you, Sophie. I won't hurt you again. I promise."
Sophia's body shook with her sobs. She couldn't control her emotions.
Gabriel held her, stroking her head like she was a scared kitten. "I made a mistake before, but it won't happen again. If you're mad, you can hit me."
He turned her to face him, his eyes sincere. "I'm sorry," he said, taking her hand and hitting his chest with it.
Sophia pulled her hand back, wincing. "What are you doing?"
"Just hit me," Gabriel said earnestly.
"What's the point?" she asked, her voice still angry.
"You'll feel better," he said, relieved that she seemed calmer.
Sophia sniffled, turning away. "Sophie," Gabriel said softly, turning her back to face him. "Did you misunderstand me and Miss Taylor?"
"No," she lied.
Gabriel felt a bit of relief but still explained, "There's nothing between me and Miss Taylor."
"What does that have to do with me?" Sophia snapped.
Gabriel continued, "She's Clara Taylor, the bank president's daughter. The company’s short on funds, and her dad used to handle our business. This time, for some reason, she took over. The amount we need is pretty big, so I had to deal with it personally. We were just discussing financing details in the office."
Gabriel added, "Sophie, ever since I realized how I feel about you, there's no one else. I only have eyes for you."
Sophia started to calm down, still sulking but listening to Gabriel. She remembered seeing Clara leave his office, looking all happy and with smudged lipstick. It was easy to jump to conclusions, but if she'd stayed calm, she might've seen through Clara's act.
She'd been waiting for half an hour, thinking about the past, and seeing Clara come out of Gabriel's office had pushed her over the edge.
The last tear slid down Sophia's face, and Gabriel leaned in to kiss it away. Sophia stiffened, her eyes wide. She looked pitiful with tear stains and snot on her delicate face.
Her heart skipped a beat, then started racing. Gabriel's face was so close, almost touching hers. The atmosphere in the car turned charged.
Gabriel's lips looked soft and inviting, like cotton candy. He smiled, his voice hoarse, "Don't cry anymore, okay?"
He cupped her face, wiping away her tears with his thumb, then reached for a tissue to clean her snot. But Sophia suddenly turned her head, and their lips met, along with the snot.
Gabriel, usually a clean freak, felt uncomfortable but didn't pull away. He deepened the kiss instead.
In that moment, it felt like they were the only two people in the world. Alex came down with a lunch box, thinking Gabriel must've explained everything to Sophia and they'd need to eat. He wondered if they were still in the parking lot. Turning the corner, he saw them kissing in the car and quickly turned back.
It seemed they didn't need the food anymore.
Alex angrily took the lunch box back to the elevator, returned to the executive office, and prepared to eat Gabriel's food, only to get a call from him.
"Bring the food down." Gabriel's voice sounded breathless and unsettled.
Alex reluctantly brought the lunch box down again.
Gabriel hadn't done anything because Sophia's stomach growled with hunger. It seemed as if it were contagious, and his stomach growled too.
So they had to separate awkwardly.
Sophia quickly tidied up her clothes.
Gabriel suggested, "Shall we go up to eat?"
Sophia shook her head, "I have a lot of work this afternoon. I'll leave after eating here."
Gabriel had no choice but to call Alex to bring the food down.
Gabriel suddenly reached out, and Sophia flinched. Her stomach was so hungry; surely he wouldn't continue, right?
