Chapter 564 Almost Got Beaten to Death
Aragorn watched Nicholas and Caroline head out together, and bam, that sharp pain hit his chest again. Next thing you know, he's out cold.
Right outside, Nicholas frowned but had no choice but to drag Aragorn to the hospital.
Outside the ER, Daniel, Clayton, and Samuel were hanging around too. Caroline glanced at the door, then at Gummidge, who looked all worried and stuff.
She felt uneasy.
Nicholas squeezed her hand and whispered, "Don't sweat it, it'll be alright."
Caroline almost laughed, thinking, 'Aragorn's his dad, not mine, so why's Nicholas comforting me?'
But hey, after he said that, she did feel a bit better.
Caroline couldn't even figure out what she was stressing about.
She thought, 'Am I scared that if Aragorn kicks the bucket, everyone will blame me again?'
Even though she was innocent, some folks just don't care about the truth.
When they first got to the hospital, she could tell from Gummidge's look that Gummidge wasn't her biggest fan.
Nobody likes being hated, especially when it's Nicholas's mom.
Even though Nicholas and his family weren't exactly tight, Gummidge still raised him.
Caroline looked down, counting the veins on Nicholas's hand as he held hers tight.
About an hour later, the doc came out.
"The patient had a relapse from extreme anger. He's stable now, but he needs to stay a few days for observation."
Everyone let out a sigh of relief.
Aragorn got moved to a room, and Gummidge stayed to keep an eye on him. Hearing Aragorn was okay, Daniel and the others decided to bounce.
As they were leaving, Clayton gave Caroline a weird look.
Samuel also gave Caroline and Nicholas a long stare.
Daisy was his sister, and she got humiliated today. Of course, he was pissed. He thought Nicholas could've handled it privately, but nope, he aired it all out at the banquet.
But even though Samuel was mad, he kept it cool and just followed Daniel.
"By tomorrow, everyone in the city will know what went down tonight," Daniel said once they got in the car.
Samuel and Clayton stayed quiet, listening.
"Samuel, tell your mom to keep Daisy at home for now. She needs to chill."
Samuel nodded, "Got it."
"And about Trevor, wait till Daisy's calmed down, then ask her who his dad is."
"Alright."
"If we can't find out, no biggie. Our family can handle raising a kid."
Samuel kept nodding. He really looked up to Daniel.
So he always did what Daniel said, seeing him as a role model.
Now, whatever Daniel said, he did.
"And don't go picking fights with Caroline. She didn't do anything wrong. If anyone's to blame, it's the Watsons and Daisy."
Samuel said softly, "I get it."
"Clayton, you hear me? Answer!" Daniel was as happy with Samuel's understanding as he was bummed out with Clayton.
Clayton mumbled, "Yeah, okay."
Daniel went quiet.
He really wished Clayton would get his act together!
In the ward, Gummidge carefully wiped Aragorn's face. Knowing Aragorn was okay, Paul yawned and left.
It was getting late.
Nicholas didn't go in but stayed at the door.
"Nicholas, I'll stay at the hospital tonight. Don't worry, Uncle Aragorn will be fine."
Nicholas nodded, and Caroline nudged him away.
Just as they were leaving, Gummidge stepped out.
Since they got to the hospital, Gummidge had been unusually quiet, her eyes full of disappointment towards Nicholas.
"Did he leave?" Gummidge asked.
Her tone was so off that even Paul was taken aback.
"Yeah, it's late, and Nicholas's leg isn't great, so I told him to head home."
Gummidge didn't say another word and went back into the ward.
Paul followed her in.
"Aunt, don't be too hard on Nicholas. What you and Uncle Aragorn did was really... It's not too late now. You should see Daisy for who she really is and stop treating her like family."
"Actually, Caroline's pretty great."
"Don't mention her to me!" Gummidge, usually so gentle, suddenly blew up like a firecracker.
Paul was freaked out.
Gummidge's eyes turned red, tears threatening to spill. "Your uncle's health has always been bad. He takes so many meds and goes through so many treatments every year. He used to be so strong, but now he's just wasting away, practically skin and bones."
"The doc said he doesn't have many years left. His only wish now is to see Nicholas settle down."
"When Nicholas was in a coma after the car accident, Aragorn was in bad shape too. But he was scared that if he died on the operating table, no one would take care of Nicholas, so he held on until Nicholas woke up before having surgery, which made his condition worse."
"Aragorn just wants to see his only son Nicholas get married and have kids, to see someone who won't mind his disability and will take care of him."
"Why can't Nicholas get that?"
Gummidge's tears finally fell.
Paul bit his lip. He wanted to say that Caroline didn't mind Nicholas's disability, so why couldn't Aragorn just bless Caroline and Nicholas?
'Forget it,' he thought. Better to shut up now, or Gummidge might cry forever.
On the way home, Nicholas still held Caroline's hand.
Caroline tried to pull it back but found that he held it even tighter, so she gave up.
"Loosen up a bit, my hand hurts," she said softly.
Nicholas closed his eyes to rest. "Don't run away, and I'll loosen up a bit."
After she obediently agreed, Nicholas loosened his grip a bit.
A few seconds later, Nicholas asked her, "At the banquet, when I took you into The Watson Mansion, you seemed really resistant. Why?"
Caroline didn't know why he was asking this and paused.
"After everything that happened back then, how could I be happy to see your family?"
Nicholas suddenly opened his eyes, and in the dim light of the car, his eyes were full of heartache.
"You must have been really scared, right?"
The defense in Caroline's heart was once again torn apart by him, and grievance swamped her.
She tried to keep her voice steady but couldn't hide the hint of tears in it.
"Yes, I was really scared, Nicholas. Outside your house, I was almost beaten to death."
It felt like a punch landed on Nicholas's heart.
"You were beaten outside my house? By who?"
"Daisy."
Nicholas clenched his fists, and a murderous aura quickly filled the car.
Sharpe, who was silently driving in the front, couldn't help but shiver.
"She dared to hit you! Where did she hit you? How did she hit you?"
Caroline pointed to herself. "Here, here, and here, and here... Except for my head, which I protected, every part of my body was covered in bruises, and I even had fractures, almost leading to internal bleeding."
Nicholas immediately pictured Caroline helpless and taking a beating. It took his breath away.
