Chapter 453 I Wouldn't Do Such a Thing

The scene was chaotic. The bodyguards rushed in and restrained the woman, who kept cursing.

Caroline was frozen in fear, staring at Daniel's badly burned arm.

Nicholas hurried over, looking worried. "Are you hurt?"

Caroline shook her head slowly. Daniel had protected her, so she was fine.

But Daniel...

She never expected him to jump in and save her like that.

"Mr. Wolf," Nicholas said, frowning.

"I'm fine," Daniel replied, gritting his teeth.

"We have a car ready, Mr. Wolf. You should get to the hospital," the host of the engagement party said, concerned.

Daniel nodded and left. Caroline went with him. She wanted to make sure that he was alright, since he got hurt saving her.

Nicholas signaled Sharpe to push him, and they followed too.

As they made their way to the hospital, Daniel noticed the two cars trailing them.

He couldn't explain it, but seeing Caroline in danger made him instinctively want to protect her. Maybe it was because she played the violin so beautifully. He loved listening to her play; it really moved him.

At the hospital, Daniel was rushed to the emergency room. The doctor was surprised when he heard that it was an acid burn.

"You're lucky it didn't reach the bone, but it'll leave a scar."

Daniel didn't care. At his age, a scar was no big deal, but if it had been Caroline who had to live with a scar, that would have really upset him.

Caroline waited outside with Nicholas. He tried to hold her hand but felt as though there was an invisible barrier between them.

Finally, Daniel came out with his arm bandaged. Seeing Caroline, he smiled warmly. "It's nothing serious, Ms. Clark. You can relax."

"Why did you save me?" Caroline asked hesitantly.

Daniel was from the Wolf family, and she didn't have a good opinion of them. She always thought they did everything for Daisy's benefit.

Daisy was the princess of the Wolf family, spoiled by everyone.

When Caroline first met Daisy, she envied her for having such a loving family.

"I have a daughter your age. She's seriously ill and doesn't have much time left. When I see you, I just want to protect you."

Caroline only knew Daisy as the Wolf family's heiress. Where did this daughter come from?

The question flashed through her mind.

"Thank you," Caroline said, taking out her phone. "Let me pay for today's medical expenses."

She didn't want to owe the Wolf family anything.

"You don't have to," Daniel said.

"You got hurt saving me. It's only right that I pay," Caroline insisted.

Nicholas stepped in calmly, "Mr. Wolf, please accept it."

Daniel was silent for a moment. "Alright."

He handed the bill to Caroline, who went to pay for it.

"Thank you," Nicholas said.

Hearing Nicholas' thanks, Daniel raised an eyebrow. "Why are you thanking me?"

"I was too far away to protect Caroline in time. Thank you for shielding her," Nicholas said, looking at Daniel.

Daniel's expression darkened. "Do you know Daisy claims she's pregnant with your child?"

Nicholas replied, "That child isn't mine. I've never liked Daisy, and I'd never be with her. The only one I love is Caroline."

Daniel's frown deepened. Daisy insisted the child was Nicholas'. What was going on?

Caroline returned and handed Daniel the medicine.

"Take two of these pills three times a day. You need to come back in two days to change the dressing. I'll come with you."

Since Daniel got hurt saving her, she felt indebted to him.

"Alright," Daniel agreed.

"Mr. Wolf, can I get your phone number to remind you about the appointment?"

"Sure," Daniel gave her his number, and Caroline saved it, calling briefly so he'd have her contact details too.

Over half an hour later, Daniel got home.

Linda had just returned from the hospital. Declan and his wife stayed with Diana every day, but Linda felt out of place there, so she came home at night and went back during the day.

Linda was exhausted from worrying about Diana. She sat on the couch, waiting for Daniel.

Seeing his injured arm, Linda asked, "What happened to your hand?"

"I got a little hurt," Daniel said, not planning to elaborate.

But Linda pressed, "What kind of injury? Daniel, we agreed not to hide things from each other."

Daniel knew he couldn't hide it, so he explained what happened at the party.

"Acid? You're not young anymore. What if it had splashed on your face or eyes?" Linda stood up, anxious, and started lecturing him.

Daniel said, "But if it had splashed on Caroline's face, she would have been disfigured. My hand isn't hurt that badly; it'll heal. Let's consider it good karma for Diana."

Linda fell silent, lost in thought as she looked at Daniel's hand. They had been married for so many years and knew each other well. Daniel immediately guessed her thoughts.

"I won't use this as leverage," he said.

Linda glanced at him. "But our matching failed."

She had been researching related cases online every day. If family matching failed, the chances of finding a match from others were very low. Given Diana's condition, she might not live to see a successful match.

Now that there was a chance with Caroline, Linda wanted to hold on to that hope. She had just found her daughter and didn't want to lose her again.

Daniel frowned deeply.

By the time Caroline left the hospital, it was already 10:30 PM. Sophia had sent a message saying Josie was asleep with Emma and that she should pick her up tomorrow.

Caroline had no choice but to go home.

She and Nicholas left together.

"Daniel is different from the rest of the Wolf family. He's the head and the most reasonable one," Nicholas suddenly said, causing Caroline to pause.

"Daniel's daughter went missing for over twenty years and was recently found, but she's seriously ill and almost beyond treatment."
