Chapter 289 Completely Vanished
Today, Nicholas's parents returned from abroad, and Daisy came to the preschool early to pick up Josie so she could meet her grandparents.
Upon finding out Josie wasn't at the preschool; Daisy demanded an explanation from the teachers. Learning that Caroline had taken her child out, Daisy became even more uncompromising.
The director was overwhelmed, and indeed, the teacher's private removal of a child from school violated the institution's regulations.
Caroline hurried back to the preschool with Josie.
"Caroline, what were you thinking taking my daughter out?!" Daisy snapped, pulling Josie to her side and confronting Caroline with imposing anger.
Josie nearly stumbled from her mother’s yanking and cowered like a frightened quail.
Caroline frowned and explained, "Josie wanted to visit her injured classmate."
"She could have told me if she wanted to visit her classmate. What's your real intention in taking her instead?" Daisy accused.
Faced with blame, Caroline knew she was at fault, as she should not have taken Josie out, but she did so out of compassion and didn't regret it.
"What ulterior motive could I possibly have? Josie said she told you, but you didn't agree to let her visit her friend," Caroline rebutted.
"I'm her mother. If I say no, then she can't go, no matter who wants to take her. Caroline, I'm going to file a complaint against you!" Daisy exploded in anger, aiming her fury at Caroline.
Caroline responded coolly, "Last time, you told Josie to put something in my cup, and I haven't settled that with you yet. Since this is the case, shall we sort this matter out?" Caroline threatened.
Daisy was taken aback, and a guilty look flashed in her eyes, but she denied it, "I'm Josie's mother. Why would I tell my child to put something in her teacher's cup? Don't make baseless accusations."
"Do you need me to check the security footage for you? Or perhaps, calling the police would be more prudent." As Caroline spoke, she reached for her phone, pretending to call the authorities.
The school director saw that the situation was spiraling out of control and quickly stepped in to mediate.
"Josie's mom, Roberts, let's talk this out calmly," the director urged. "Roberts did take Josie outside, but it was at Josie's request, and our lead teacher was informed..."
"I don't care who asked for what. I'm Josie's mother. Without my approval, you had no right to do this. I'm going to file a complaint with the Board of Education, and I will expose your daycare center."
This time, she was determined to give Caroline a piece of her mind.
When she found out that Caroline had taken Josie, she nearly thought Caroline had already found out.
Caroline put down her phone without calling the police; she was merely trying to scare Daisy.
She didn't expect Daisy to be unfazed, completely unconcerned about the possibility of Josie being exposed for drugging her.
Caroline clenched her phone, looking at Josie who Daisy had pulled behind her, meek and compliant.
A pang of discomfort rippled through her.
If she were really to release the surveillance footage of Josie drugging her, that would be a massive blow to the child as well.
With gritted teeth, Caroline conceded.
"What will it take for you to leave the daycare alone?" she asked.
"Get out. Leave the daycare," Daisy demanded, clearly feeling victorious.
Seeing Caroline in fear, Daisy's sense of triumph soared. This opportunity had landed in her lap, and she was not about to be polite about it.
She grabbed Josie's hand and arrogantly told the director, "I want a resolution by tomorrow at the latest, or the daycare center might as well shut its doors!"
After Daisy and Josie left the director's office, the director let out a weary sigh.
"Roberts, you certainly messed up this time," the director said.
Caroline had nothing to say.
"You just mentioned something about Josie drugging you. Is that true?" the director asked.
"No," Caroline denied.
The director didn't dwell on it, thinking it was unlikely that a young child would do such a thing. Surely, Caroline was just speaking out of desperation due to Daisy's pressure.
The director was quite fond of Roberts. She had a lovely demeanor, played the violin beautifully, had a pleasant personality, and was great with kids. Despite having plenty of free time, she often volunteered at the daycare.
Most importantly, she was an international violinist personally recruited by CEO Lancaster.
But...
"Josie's father is the president of Watson Group, a pharmaceutical giant. We simply can't afford to offend him. If her mother truly files a complaint with the Board of Education, our daycare might be ruined,” the director contemplated.
"Roberts..." the director hesitated to continue.
The director's words made it crystal clear to Caroline that this time, she had no choice but to leave.
Caroline stated, "I understand. I'll pack up my things and won't come in to work tomorrow."
"Roberts, thanks for understanding," Josie said, nursing her bruised arm as she was abruptly escorted into the car by Daisy and slid across to the other door.
Daisy's face was full of malice as she glared fiercely at her.
"Josie, have you grown too big for your britches? Not listening to your mother anymore? How could you let that nasty woman take you to see a classmate?" Daisy rebuked her daughter sharply.
Josie was on the verge of tears, stammered, "I... I wasn't..."
"Who have you been picking up these bad habits from? Was it those two who came over to play last time?" Daisy accused.
Josie shook her head, "No, it wasn't them. I haven't."
Daisy, enraged, pinched Josie's arm and twisted it.
Josie's tears immediately poured down.
"It hurts, Mom, it hurts!" Josie cried out.
"That's because you don't listen. If you don't listen, it's going to hurt. Are you going to dare again?" Daisy intimidated her.
"No, I won't," Josie sobbed.
"No crying!" she demanded.
Josie tried to silence herself, but her tears kept falling uncontrollably like pearls.
Agitated, Daisy got in the driver's seat. Today, she had heard from Marlow Kurtz about a woman named Ann who had tried to approach Nicholas but was stopped at the company's reception. And Nicholas, upon hearing this, surprisingly instructed the receptionist to let her in next time.
Nicholas never forgot Caroline!
Daisy was determined to drive Caroline out of the country again and make her vanish from Nicholas's life for good. Right, Caroline was married now, wasn't she? With a child, too.
If Daisy could just inform Caroline's husband about Caroline's past...
A twisted expression marred Daisy's once delicate features, twisted by jealousy. She floored the accelerator, then slammed on the brakes.
"Bang..." Josie's head hit the back of the front seat.
Though in pain, Josie didn't dare make a sound.
Watching Josie's pitiful state, Daisy felt a twisted sense of satisfaction.
When they got back to the Watson residence, Aragorn Watson sat in the living room watching the news, and Gummidge Peggoty was in the kitchen instructing the housekeeper on what to make for dinner.
Daisy walked in with Josie.
"Josie, say hi to Grandpa," she instructed.
Josie weakly greeted, "Grandpa."
Aragorn Watson hummed a soft acknowledgment, displaying little warmth towards his granddaughter.
He was known for his stern appearance, and recent illnesses had made his complexion even paler than usual.
Josie feared her grandfather more than her father. She hadn't seen him often since she was a child, but each encounter made it clear that he didn't seem to take any liking to her.
"Grandma," Josie said softly, seeking some form of solace.
Gummidge Peggoty stepped out and saw Josie, feeling a tinge of joy.
Yet, Josie had such a displeasing disposition, sullen and quiet, with an exceptionally timid heart, fearful in anyone's presence.
"Come over here and let me have a look," Gummidge Peggoty said, beckoning with a gentle hand.
Josie glanced at Daisy, who gave her a nod of approval, and she walked over.
"You've grown a bit, but still too thin, wrists as skinny as chopsticks, oh, what happened here?" Gummidge Peggoty noticed a small bruise on Josie's forearm.
