Chapter 577 A Narrow Escape
"Caroline managed to shake off those jerks. She might not have had the chance to save me. I'm too weak. Not as tough as her. She could get away, but me..."
Diana started crying again.
Linda hugged her tight. "Alright, enough talking."
"Officer, you gotta catch those guys and make sure they pay."
The officer put away his pen and notebook. "Don't worry, we're on it."
He added, "Miss Clark asked for help and reported the incident. Legally and morally, she did the right thing."
Linda pressed her lips together. "Thanks."
The officer walked away, and Diana curled up in Linda's arms, like a lost puppy needing comfort.
"Mom, don't blame Caroline. She's not like that."
"You've been through so much. Stop defending her. Why don't you lie down and get some rest?"
Diana nodded.
She glanced quietly at Paul.
Diana wondered, 'Why hasn't he shown any concern for me? I was humiliated, and he doesn't come to comfort me?'
Diana felt empty and super disappointed.
Paul said, "Aunt Linda, you heard what the officer said. There's nothing more to it. Please don't trouble Caroline anymore."
Linda lowered her head, her expression unreadable. "I get it."
Paul turned and left. Diana's earlier words, which seemed to defend Caroline, were actually twisting the story.
Plus, she didn't mention Caroline saving her at all.
Once Diana fell asleep, Linda went out to find the doctor for more info, and Clayton followed Paul out.
The room was left with just Diana and Mia.
Diana opened her eyes, and Mia sat down on the chair beside her.
Diana said, "I did what you asked. Can you let my parents go now?"
She was talking about her adoptive parents, the Scotts.
Mia said indifferently, "You did, but the result wasn't what I expected."
Diana asked, "What more do you want?"
Mia smiled. "Don't worry. Your adoptive parents are safe for now. As long as you do what I say, they'll be fine."
Diana bit her lip. She couldn't resist Mia. Her identity was fake, and if it came out, Daniel and Linda wouldn't care about her or the Scotts' lives.
At that point, Mia could totally destroy the Scotts.
She could be in trouble, but the Scotts couldn't.
So she had no choice but to betray Caroline.
Mia cursed inwardly, 'Those thugs are useless; they couldn't even catch Caroline.'
She hadn't expected Caroline to be so fierce, breaking free and running into Clayton.
Tonight's plan flopped, but at least it wasn't a total waste.
Mia thought to herself, "Linda, when you find out that the person you slapped tonight is your biological daughter, you'll regret it so much."
Mia showed a loving expression and patted Diana's head.
"Be a good Miss of the Wolfs, and you'll have everything—money, fame, status, and even Paul."
Diana shivered, a chill running down her spine right where Mia had touched her.
When Caroline got home, it was already early morning. Josie was asleep, and Lisa came out when she heard the noise, seeing Caroline in a disheveled state.
"Caroline, what the heck happened to you?" Lisa asked, pulling Caroline closer to check her out.
Caroline shrugged. "Nothing, I'm good."
"Who smacked your face?"
Caroline's face was swollen, with clear finger marks showing how hard someone had hit her.
Caroline's eyes darkened. "Some psycho. Lisa, chill. I'll ice it and put some medicine on. It'll be fine in a couple of days."
Lisa helped Caroline sit on the couch and then went to get ice and medicine.
Nicholas took the stuff from her. "You go rest. I'll handle this."
Lisa looked at Caroline. "Alright, you both get some rest too."
"Okay."
Nicholas placed the ice on Caroline's face. The cold sensation quickly soothed the burning pain, and Caroline sighed in relief.
Nicholas said, "She hit you, and you didn't dodge?"
Caroline replied, "I was caught off guard."
"Couldn't you hit back?"
Caroline thought about it. Normally, she would have fought back, but at that moment, she didn't know why she couldn't. Maybe she didn't even think about it. And at that moment, she felt a strange sadness. It was inexplicable.
Caroline mused, 'I don't like the Wolfs and have no feelings for them, so why feel sad? Or do I subconsciously think Linda and Daniel are different? Probably.'
The first time she met Linda, she felt a certain warmth from her. Even knowing Linda was Daisy's aunt, she maintained some respect. However, tonight's baffling slap from Linda seemed to erase all the good impressions Caroline had harbored. Linda lost her mind for her daughter Diana.
When applying the medicine, Caroline felt a bit of pain. She couldn't help but cry out.
Nicholas paused. He looked deeply at Caroline and suddenly leaned in, blowing gently on her cheek. "Hang in there. The ointment will help it heal faster."
Caroline's other cheek quietly turned red. She looked down, not daring to meet his eyes.
After that, Caroline went to her room to shower and rest. She didn't care about Nicholas; there were toiletries in the guest room for him. Probably too tired, Caroline fell asleep as soon as she got into bed.
In the middle of the night, Lisa came out for a drink of water and found Nicholas sitting in the living room, not asleep. She was worried about Caroline and couldn't sleep, so she walked over and sat across from Nicholas.
"Nicholas, thanks for looking out for Caroline."
Nicholas said, "It's what I should do."
"Caroline's had a rough life since she was young. She only shares the good stuff with me, leaving me both concerned and saddened by what she suffered."
Lisa sighed. "Can you tell me what happened? Who hit her?"
Nicholas thought for a moment. Caroline didn't want Lisa to worry, and neither did he. Whoever Caroline wanted to protect, he would protect too.
"She did run into some trouble and got falsely accused of standing aside. But don't worry, I won't let this happen again."
Nicholas's eyes darkened. Linda, usually gentle, wise, and rational, lost her reason because of Diana, as if she had become a different person.
Lisa said, "I believe you. Please take good care of her."
Nicholas's expression tightened, and he nodded seriously. "Rest assured! I won't let her get hurt again!"
