Chapter 618 Protecting

Back in the day, Linda thought Daisy was a sweetheart, but now? Man, she just found it hilarious.

Daisy was fuming, breathing like a bull, eyes wide, looking like she wanted to rip Caroline apart.

"Caroline, you nasty piece of work, you'll never get a happy ending."

Linda stormed over and slapped Daisy hard.

"You're the nasty one," Linda spat, her chest heaving with rage.

Linda thought, 'Mia's a snake, and so is her daughter, Daisy. I got played big time; I'm such an idiot!'

Linda's slap left everyone stunned.

Daisy stared at Linda, shocked, her hand on her cheek.

"Aunt Linda, why... why'd you hit me? What did I do wrong?" Daisy's tears hit the ground instantly.

Linda snapped, "You cursed my daughter. You think I shouldn't slap you? And you almost beat her to death before."

If Daisy had actually killed Caroline back then, Linda would've never seen her daughter again.

Thinking about it made Linda's heart ache with sorrow and anger.

"Daisy, from now on, don't call me Aunt. I don't have room for someone as vicious as you in my family. You and Mia are two peas in a pod."

Daisy couldn't believe how fast Linda flipped the script.

Linda used to treat her like her own kid, giving her the best of everything.

Now, Linda looked at her like she was the enemy.

Daisy couldn't handle it.

She saw Daniel and called out, all pitiful and hurt, "Uncle Daniel."

Daniel's face was stone cold. "Caroline's your family, and you treat her like dirt. Keep it up, and don't call me Uncle anymore."

Daisy took a step back, totally shocked, eyes wide with disbelief.

"But she doesn't care about you at all. She doesn't even want to acknowledge you."

Linda cut in, "Even so, she's still our daughter. Hurt her again, and I'll make you and your wicked mom wish you were dead!"

Caroline saw all of Linda's protection. Her eyes landed on Linda's thin but strong back, and her heart felt like it was gonna burst out of her chest.

Even her eyes got a bit misty.

Daisy ran off, crying and defeated.

Daniel looked at Caroline, his gaze soft. "Caroline, were you scared just now?" His tone was as gentle as talking to a kid.

Linda's back stiffened, wanting to turn around to look at Caroline but too scared to.

Daniel glanced at her sideways, then gently turned her around.

Linda immediately dropped her gaze to her high heels.

Daniel signaled her to look at Caroline, but Linda couldn't. She felt too guilty and ashamed for how she'd treated Caroline before. She couldn't face her.

She was scared of letting Caroline down.

"Mommy." A soft voice broke the tension.

Josie had been startled awake by Daisy's noise, looking at Caroline with scared eyes.

Hearing that voice, Linda looked up at Josie.

This was her real granddaughter.

She really wanted to hug Josie.

She'd always liked Josie for some reason, but since Josie wasn't Daisy's kid, she didn't see her much.

Josie was snuggled up in Nicholas's arms.

Caroline patted her head to comfort her. "It's okay, we're heading home soon."

Josie nodded.

Daniel strolled over. "Can I hold Josie?"

He waited for Caroline's nod.

Caroline stayed quiet, but since she didn't say no, Daniel happily reached out for Josie.

"Josie, come here."

Josie didn't put up a fight, so she let him scoop her up.

She was in first grade now and had shot up a bit, making it tougher for Daniel to hold her.

Linda watched with longing eyes.

Daniel reluctantly handed Josie over to Linda.

Linda's face lit up with a big smile.

"Josie, I'm your grandma."

Josie liked Linda and chirped, "Grandma."

Hearing Josie call her grandma made Linda even happier. She hugged Josie tight.

"Josie, you're such a good, cute kid."

Josie giggled. "Grandma's cute too."

Clayton walked over. "Josie, call me uncle."

Josie followed suit. "Uncle."

Clayton reached out and pinched her cheek.

"So adorable."

Josie widened her eyes, and Linda slapped Clayton's hand away.

"Don't pinch."

Clayton rubbed his slapped hand, still grinning.

Seeing this warm scene, Caroline felt a mix of emotions, like something was swelling up inside her.

Nicholas held her hand, looking up at her.

"Now that you've got your family's love and protection, am I gonna be left out?"

Caroline playfully glared at him.

Paul, feeling left out and jealous, chimed in. "Don't get all lovey-dovey in front of me! Or I'll find a girlfriend and show off every day."

Nicholas smirked. "Your mom called me a few days ago, said she wants to set you up on a blind date."

Paul's face turned pale. "I'd rather die than go on a blind date."

After ten minutes, Josie was back in Nicholas's arms, and Daniel and Linda watched them leave.

Linda wiped away her tears.

This time, they were happy tears.

Even though Caroline was still a bit distant, she didn't stop them from being with Josie or letting Josie call them Grandpa and Grandma.

'Does this mean Caroline's starting to accept us?' Linda wondered.

Daniel held Linda's hand, gently rubbing it.

"Don't worry, Caroline will come around. She's a good girl."

"It's all my fault. I hurt her because of Daisy and Diana without thinking."

The next day, Daniel got discharged from the hospital. Clayton came to pick him up, and Michael showed up too.

"Daniel, I'm sorry." Michael, holding a bouquet of flowers, said apologetically, "It's all my fault for not keeping Mia in check. If I had known about her evil plans earlier, I would've stopped her."

Daniel frowned, feeling angry just looking at Michael. Michael was holding a bouquet of chrysanthemums.

'Is he wishing for my quick death?' Daniel thought.

"I promise I won't let Mia cause any more trouble," Michael continued.

Daniel really wanted to kick him, but he held back and said coldly, "Take your flowers and get lost. I don't want to see you right now."

Afraid that Daniel would kick him out of the company, Michael quickly ran off with the bouquet of chrysanthemums, leaving a parting remark.

"Daniel, I'll visit when you've calmed down."

Daniel regretted not kicking him earlier.

Linda held his arm.

"Alright, don't get yourself worked up. Let's go talk to Caroline."
