Chapter 135 The Person Behind Sophia
"I'm sorry, it's all my fault, but I was just so scared, Gabriel, sorry"
Gabriel sat on the sofa, his face expressionless as he stared into the distance, his eyes deep as an ancient well with no visible bottom. His hands naturally rested on either side, allowing Tiffany to weep in his embrace.
At this moment, no one could see the emotions deep within him, except for himself.
When Tiffany cried herself out, Gabriel slowly reached out and supported her shoulders, pushing her away gently. He then stood up and walked to the window, opening it to allow the cold northern wind to howl in.
Only moments ago, Alex had informed him that Tiffany had transferred ownership of the house in Jiangbei to Alfred, and Tiffany had been giving Alfred a large sum of money almost every month.
His unfathomable suspicions about Tiffany had just fallen onto her, and she had come to him, tossing him a recording of Scarlett where Alfred's voice was clearly recognizable, threatening Tiffany.
"All this money is what I earned from my studio. Initially, I gave him money to make sure he took good care of Sam and cured him sooner. But I never expected his appetite to grow bigger. Since he wouldn't dare take more from you directly, he resorted to indirect means and asked me for benefits. For Sam's sake, how could I refuse?"
Tiffany felt wronged as she sobbed and spoke these words, and even she was touched by her own words.
Look at how much humiliation she endured for the sake of Sam. She could easily be hailed as the best stepmother in history.
Gabriel wondered, was her compensation to Alfred insufficient?
This compensation far exceeded a reasonable range, many times over!
Alfred was simply too greedy.
And he himself was too foolish, for not realizing Alfred's greed sooner, for not discovering all of this earlier.
Gabriel slammed his fist onto the window frame, causing Tiffany to be frightened and rendered speechless. Her face turned pale, and she anxiously grabbed hold of his hand.
"Gabriel, don't be like this. It's all my fault. If I had told you earlier, it would have been better. It's all because I was too timid and weak. He used Sam to threaten me, and I had no way to fight back."
Tiffany's tears continued to flow, and she seemed to be blaming herself, but she was also deflecting responsibility, placing it all on Alfred.
It wasn't that she deliberately hid all of this; it was because Alfred was using Sam as a threat.
How did he threaten her?
Alfred said that Gabriel trusts me, so as long as during the psychological counseling sessions I brainwash Sam and make him not recognize you as his stepmother.
Because she had flatly refused to give Alfred any more money and had made it clear that she would tell Gabriel, Alfred was furious. When he prescribed medication to Sam, he intentionally switched it, and after she realized something was wrong, she had to give Alfred money again.
The last transaction record was from three days ago.
And this amount of money was more than...
Any other time would have been better than now.
Tiffany's arguments were flawed, but they could still withstand scrutiny. She had recordings of Scarlett, where Alfred made threats, and even several text screenshots that Gabriel had discovered, all of which aligned with Tiffany's statements.
However, Tiffany had numerous ways to resolve the situation. When Alfred first threatened her, she could have chosen to report him to the police or tell Gabriel about it. But she didn't do so, claiming that she was afraid of Sam getting hurt again.
Gabriel's mind was in turmoil, unsure whether he should believe her or not.
"You should go first," Gabriel croaked, his throat hoarse. He hadn't slept a wink and his eyes were bloodshot. There were dark circles under his eyes, and stubble grew on his chin. He seemed enveloped in a stifling gloom.
The cold wind made his mind even more alert.
Tiffany felt anxious. She believed her explanation was seamless, and the evidence she presented was authentic enough. Shouldn't Gabriel comfort her wounded soul?
He told her to leave?
Does Gabriel not trust her?
"Gabriel," Tiffany embraced him from behind, tears flowing down her face once more. "I really care about you and Sam. I'm so afraid of losing you both. I know I should have told you earlier, and I made a mistake. Please don't reject me."
Gabriel took a deep breath, suppressing his inner frustration.
"I'm not rejecting you, but you need to stop overthinking. I need time to handle all this. I'll be busy for a while. You should go back and rest."
Tiffany shook her head. "I want to handle this with you."
"It's not necessary."
Tiffany clenched her teeth but eventually let go of him.
"Then I'll go back first, Gabriel... "
"Go back," Gabriel interrupted her.
Tears filled Tiffany's eyes, streaks marking her cheeks. Her nose was also reddened. She looked fearful, like a little rabbit, a pitiful sight that could easily stir a man's protective instincts. Unfortunately, Gabriel didn't even glance at her, keeping his back turned.
It's fine. As long as she gets through this, she can find a way to mend Gabriel's resentment. Moreover, she had solid evidence, and even if the police were to investigate, they wouldn't find anything.
And as for Alfred... well, they would never find him!
As the sound of the door closing reached his ears, Gabriel lowered his gaze. The restless turmoil in his heart was soothed by the chilly wind. He stared at the towering buildings outside.
After a moment, he took out his phone and called Alex.
"Keep investigating Tiffany."
If Tiffany truly had no involvement, then everything would be fine. He would continue to treat her well and compensate her even more. But if... Gabriel didn't want to entertain the worst-case scenario, yet he had to be prepared for it.
Tiffany didn't go home; instead, she went to her studio.
She couldn't understand it no matter how much she thought about it.
What link went wrong in the end?
Is it Sophia again?
Yes, it's her!
But how did Sophia know about Sam's side effects?
Did Sophia secretly meet Sam?
But even so, Sophia wouldn't have noticed during their short time together. Only someone who spends time with them day in and day out and carefully observes would notice.
So the crux of the matter lies with Colin. If Sophia hadn't gone to see Colin, he wouldn't have been willing to treat Sam. But...Colin has never seen the medicine Sam takes.
Sam's medication has already run out, and Sophia gave her the most recent bottle, which Gabriel later stopped giving her, so she didn't send it anymore.
Tiffany racked her brains but couldn't figure out which link had a loophole.
If it weren't for Ethan and Emma discovering Sam's abnormality in time and secretly hiding her medication, it wouldn't have been easy to discover the medication switch.
Based on the timeline, by the time it was discovered, Sam had already finished the medicine. As long as Tiffany and Alfred don't switch the medications again, even if Gabriel suspects something, there is no evidence. In such a situation, Alfred just has to refuse to admit it, and there's no need for him to play the disappearance act now.
Tiffany drank a large glass of water and smashed the cup onto the table, shattering it.
Her eyes widened with a malicious glint.
There must be someone behind helping Sophia!
She had to find out who this person behind the scenes was and shatter Sophia's support!
