Chapter 440 Something Good Was On The Horizon
"Mom, Dad's awake!" Emma was the first to notice Gabriel opening his eyes.
Sophia was having lunch. Hearing Emma's shout, she turned and saw Gabriel's confused but pretty eyes.
They locked eyes for a few seconds before Sophia realized what was happening. She joyfully put down her utensils and pressed the call button.
"You're awake. Are you feeling okay?" Sophia asked, concerned.
Gabriel just stared at her, following her movements.
"Mom, is Dad okay? He’s just staring." Emma was worried.
Sam leaned over and gently shook Gabriel's hand.
Ethan glanced over, frowning.
Gabriel's injury wasn't to his brain, so he couldn't be dumb, right?
The doctor arrived, quickly examined Gabriel, and asked if he felt any discomfort.
Gabriel shook his head slightly.
The doctor gave some instructions and left.
The kids gathered around, and Sophia sat by the bed, looking at Gabriel.
"Do you recognize us?" she asked softly.
Gabriel replied, "My injury isn't to my head. I haven't lost my memory."
Sophia and the kids sighed in relief.
Gabriel stayed silent. His voice was hoarse, and his mouth dry, and talking hurt his throat.
Sophia adjusted the bed so he could sit up and handed him a glass of water.
Gabriel moved his fingers slightly and weakly said, "I have no strength."
Sophia fed him the water herself.
"Dad, does it still hurt?" Emma asked, leaning over.
Gabriel slowly raised his hand and touched Emma's head.
Sophia thought, 'Didn't he say he had no strength?'
"It doesn't hurt anymore."
Emma said, "Dad is a hero for protecting Mom."
Gabriel smiled slightly. Had he finally earned the kids' approval?
Gabriel was very hungry. During his coma, he had been sustained by medication and nutritional fluids. Now awake, he needed real food.
Hearing the news, Ruth quickly had Betty bring her over.
"Gabriel." When Ruth saw his eyes open, her eyes reddened with tears of joy.
"Grandma, I'm sorry for making you worried about me."
At that moment, Gabriel really thought he was going to die. Before losing consciousness, he had many regrets.
He regretted not being able to take care of Ruth in her old age, not being able to raise his kids, and not making amends with Sophia.
He had so many things left undone; he didn't want to die.
Fortunately, he survived.
Ruth talked with Gabriel for a while before leaving, leaving the family of five together.
Dylan brought some soup, and Sophia poured a bowl, making sure it wasn't too hot before handing it to Gabriel.
Gabriel said, "I still don't have much strength."
Sophia glared at him but fed him spoonful by spoonful.
Gabriel felt a bit happy inside; being sick had its perks.
He could have her personally feed him water and soup.
The wound still hurt, and Gabriel was indeed still very weak, his face pale. After finishing the soup, he felt a bit more spirited. Harrison and Alex came over after hearing the news.
Sophia knew they might need to discuss company matters, so she took the kids out.
"You don't need to leave," Gabriel said, his voice hoarse but deep.
"I'll check on Ruth," said Sophia.
Ruth hadn't looked well when she left, and Sophia was worried.
Gabriel didn't argue, and Sophia took the kids to Ruth's ward.
Harrison and Alex updated Gabriel on the company's status during his absence.
There were some losses. As the largest shareholder of Lancaster Group, Gabriel's accident had drawn a lot of attention.
They had to handle all the questions while keeping Gabriel's condition a secret.
"Don't worry. We have protected the core data. The Micro Circuit Group made some moves, but we handled it," Harrison said.
After discussing work, Harrison joked, "You and Sophia went through a lot together. She might be very grateful. Maybe she'll even repay you with herself. Something good might be coming your way, Gabriel."
Gabriel rolled his eyes.
"Mr. Lancaster, during your coma, Ms. Kelly has been very worried. And after Ruth fell ill, she held up the Lancaster family," Alex added.
"Yeah, if it weren't for Sophia, your relatives would have tried to divide your assets by now," Harrison said.
Gabriel's parents were only children, and after his mother's relatives passed away, there weren't many family connections left. His father's side had distant elders.
If Gabriel had died, these people could have pushed a younger relative to take care of Ruth and adopt his kids, ultimately inheriting his assets.
At the critical moment, Ruth had Sophia hold up the Lancaster family to prevent these people from taking advantage.
Thankfully, Sophia lived up to Ruth's expectations.
Sophia had met these relatives during her marriage to Gabriel. When they saw Sophia back, they were scared.
They knew with Sophia around, they couldn't take advantage, and she drove them away.
With no relatives to harass them, and Harrison and Alex managing the company, Ruth and Gabriel could rest and recover.
After Harrison and Alex left, Gabriel fell asleep. He was still very weak, and talking with the kids and listening to the report had exhausted him.
Ruth also went to sleep. Sophia came out looking worried and went to see the doctor.
Charles had been settled in Country M, where Nicholas arranged a top-notch medical team. Charles would get excellent treatment and care there.
After arranging everything, Nicholas and Caroline were ready to return home with Josie.
Before leaving, Caroline called Sophia.
Only then did she learn about Sophia's situation.
Caroline was shocked. "Are you hurt?"
"I'm fine, but Gabriel is seriously injured."
"He risked his life to save you. That shows he has courage and loyalty. Sophia, maybe he really has changed."
Sophia responded softly.
After a couple of seconds of silence, Sophia asked, "When are you coming back?"
"Tomorrow."
