Chapter 408 Sweet in the Heart

Nicholas, Caroline, and Josie were watching TV together. When Josie yawned, Caroline gently squeezed her little hand.

"Josie, how about you sleep with me tonight?"

Josie's eyes lit up, and she nodded eagerly.

Seeing Nicholas looking a bit down, Josie took his hand thoughtfully.

"How about both Mommy and Daddy sleep with Josie?"

Caroline suspected Nicholas was using Josie to keep her close. He was so sneaky! But when she saw Josie's hopeful eyes, she couldn't say no.

'I missed six years of Josie's life. She thought of Daisy as her mom but never got the love she deserved. Instead, she was mistreated and grew up timid. Her childhood has been so unhappy.'

Caroline's heart ached.

"Josie," she started, but Nicholas cut in.

"Alright, Mommy and I will sleep with Josie."

Caroline had planned to comfort Josie and sleep with her alone, but now that Nicholas had agreed, she couldn't say otherwise without upsetting Josie.

Josie, usually quiet and introverted, was overjoyed and couldn't help but cheer.

Half an hour later, Nicholas and Caroline lay on either side of Josie. Caroline held a storybook and read it to her. Nicholas closed his eyes, savoring the moment. He turned slightly, staring at Caroline. She was more mature and charming now, her youthful innocence replaced by a unique allure. She still touched his heart deeply.

His heart raced, just like when he first fell for her. Her voice was so pleasant and gentle, like a sweet song to his ears and heart.

Josie had fallen asleep, her lips slightly pouting. Nicholas reached out to cover her with the blanket.

"Josie is asleep," his slightly hoarse voice interrupted Caroline's storytelling.

Caroline put down the storybook, kissed Josie's forehead, and got out of bed.

"You stay," he said softly.

Under the warm light, Nicholas' expression seemed gentler than during the day. He tried to move from the bed to his wheelchair, but his legs gave out. With a thud, he fell to the ground.

Caroline instinctively stood up on one leg.

"You..." She wanted to ask if he was okay but couldn't get the words out.

Nicholas reached for the edge of the bed.

"I'm fine," he said, his voice pained.

Caroline frowned deeply. She looked at Josie, then at Nicholas, who couldn't stand up, his face pale.

"I'll call Molly to help."

Caroline sat in her wheelchair, ready to leave.

"No need, Molly is probably asleep. Just help me," Nicholas' tone was full of vulnerability.

At that moment, Nicholas seemed so fragile, with a touch of red at the corner of his eyes, looking pitiful.

Caroline pursed her lips and wheeled herself over. Getting up from her wheelchair, she tried to help Nicholas. But she lost her balance and was pulled down by him.

Caroline let out a small gasp. Before she knew it, she was lying on top of Nicholas, their faces inches apart. She could see every tiny hair on his handsome face.

Nicholas' hand was on her waist, holding her protectively.

The air between them grew thick with tension.

Caroline felt his warm breath on her face and quickly got up.

"Sorry, you're just too heavy." Her cheeks turned a faint pink, which Nicholas noticed, and he smiled slightly.

'She still blushes so easily,' he thought.

"Let's try again," Nicholas' husky voice was sexy, his Adam's apple moving up and down.

Caroline bit her lower lip. This time, she was ready and used all her strength to help Nicholas up, finally getting him into the wheelchair, but she was drenched in sweat.

"Thank you."

Caroline asked, "How will you get back to bed later?"

She thought of the question and asked it casually.

Nicholas replied, "So, I'll need your help again."

Caroline cursed herself silently. 'I shouldn't have asked.'

Both were in wheelchairs. The only advantage Caroline had was that she had a broken leg, while Nicholas couldn't even stand.

Now, the only people in the villa were her, Nicholas, and the possibly sleeping housekeeper, Molly.

After leaving Josie's room, Caroline didn't follow Nicholas to his room to take care of him. Instead, she went to the entrance, opened the door, and called out to the bodyguards outside, "Nicholas just fell. Get two people in here to help."

The bodyguards looked at each other, and two of them walked in.

Nicholas, hearing Caroline's words from the doorway, was instantly furious!

'How could Caroline be so clever?' he thought.

The bodyguards came in, sensing Nicholas' cold aura, and were at a loss.

'Shouldn't we have come in?' they thought.

"Hurry and take Nicholas back to his room and check on him. He fell hard and might have hurt his brain," Caroline said slyly.

Nicholas remained silent.

One of the bodyguards pushed Nicholas in, and the other followed.

Nicholas gritted his teeth and had to let the bodyguards help him back to bed.

Caroline successfully got rid of this hot potato and happily returned to Josie's room, holding the soft Josie to sleep.

But when she closed her eyes, all she could think of was Nicholas' face.

He really liked to act weak to soften her heart, both then and now.

And she couldn't help but soften.

A tear fell into the pillow, quickly disappearing.

The next day, Nicholas left early. After the morning meeting, Sharpe looked at Nicholas, hesitant to speak.

"Speak up," Nicholas said coldly.

Sharpe said, "You've been back for a while now. Blake instructed me to remind you to get a check-up."

Nicholas impatiently said, "I know. I'll do it when I have time. I'm going to the lab this afternoon."

"OK."

After lunch, Nicholas finished signing a pile of documents and was about to head to the lab when he received a call from his father.

Aragorn spoke with a commanding tone, "Come home immediately."

"I have important work at the lab today."

"It's about the child. You have half an hour to get here!"

'The child? Could it be that Josie is taken away?' Nicholas thought.

Aragorn hung up, and a fierce look flashed in Nicholas' eyes.

"Head to the Watson family."

Sharpe had Charles push Nicholas and quickly called the lab director to cancel the appointment.
