Chapter 623 Joining the Fun
Because of what went down last time, Daniel was holding a serious grudge and was way tougher on him at work. Earning extra cash? Forget about it.
Michael glanced at Mia, his eyes shifting nervously, then tried to play it cool as he walked up and gave her a pat on the shoulder.
"Chill, I'll figure something out."
Mia was taken aback, thinking, 'Is Michael finally stepping up?'
They were in this mess together. If Jared snitched, Michael wouldn't be off the hook either.
Mia looked at Michael, feeling both relieved and suspicious.
She had no other options now and could only pin her hopes on Michael.
"Where you headed?" Mia called out as Michael was about to leave.
"I don't gotta report to you," Michael snapped, grabbing his car keys and heading out.
Mia felt a wave of sadness wash over her.
She had gone through so much to marry Michael and become Mrs. Wolf, but she still hadn't gotten what she wanted, and Michael was hardly ever home.
Mia bit her lip hard. Once she dealt with Jared, she'd tackle Michael's side chicks next!
"Nicholas, you sure this will flush out the mastermind?" Daniel asked, eyeing the news about Jared's arrest.
"I've got it all set up. As soon as Mia makes a move, we'll have solid proof," Nicholas's steady voice came through.
Daniel felt reassured.
With this setup, even if Mia didn't deal with Jared, they could try to get Jared to spill the beans on Mia.
At worst, it would just take some time.
Linda had been giving Daniel the cold shoulder for two days after finding out he had dinner with Caroline and Josie without inviting her.
She ignored him whenever she saw him.
Daniel, feeling helpless, bought gifts to try and make it up to Linda.
Linda didn't even glance at them.
Daniel said, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have kept it from you. How about I make it up to you?"
"How?" Linda finally responded.
Daniel quickly continued, "I'll talk to Caroline and ask her to come home for dinner this weekend. We'll have a family meal together."
Linda's eyes lit up, and she immediately agreed, "Alright, I'll give you a chance to make it up. You must bring Caroline back, or you're sleeping on the couch for a month!"
Daniel nodded eagerly. "I will!"
He wasn't confident, but he had no choice but to try.
The next day, Daniel went to Caroline's school.
He was carrying a box of pastries, which he had gone out of his way to buy from the best bakery in City B.
Daniel smiled, "Caroline, take this and share it with your colleagues."
Caroline glanced at it and took it.
"What do you need from me?"
"Are you free this weekend? We'd like to invite Lisa for a meal to thank her for raising you. You can bring Josie along too."
He didn't say the last part, 'We'll have a family meal together,' fearing that Caroline might still hold a grudge and would refuse if she heard it.
Caroline could tell that it sounded like Daniel was inviting Lisa to express gratitude, but in reality, it was to get her to come home.
She was struggling inside.
Suddenly, she remembered what Nicholas had told her that night.
'Maybe I really could try to get along with them?' Caroline thought.
"Alright, I'll talk to Lisa." She nodded.
Daniel had this whole speech ready to convince Caroline, but when she suddenly agreed, he was momentarily stunned.
After a beat, he broke into a grin. "Awesome, we'll get everything ready and wait for you. By the way, is Lisa on any special diet?"
Caroline listed some foods Lisa couldn't eat, and Daniel jotted them all down.
"How about you or Josie?"
Caroline replied, "We're good."
"Alright, got it. Caroline, your mom's gonna be over the moon knowing you're coming home for dinner."
Daniel couldn't stop smiling, even chuckling while he talked.
Noticing this, Caroline couldn't help but smile too.
"I've got a class later, so I will go."
"Alright, go ahead, don't be late."
Daniel stood there, watching Caroline's figure disappear into the school building. Only then did he excitedly get into his car and immediately called Linda to proudly tell her.
"Caroline's agreed to come home for dinner this weekend."
Linda was also overwhelmed with joy.
After hanging up, she immediately called the housekeeper over but was too excited to form a complete sentence for a while.
She didn't even know what to instruct.
The housekeeper was puzzled. "Mrs. Wolf, what do you need me to do?"
"Mom, what’s got you so happy?" Diana walked over.
Linda said, "Caroline's coming home for dinner. Right, I need you to organize a thorough cleaning of the house, not missing a single corner. Also, replace all the flowers, and... call the head chef over."
Linda rattled off a series of instructions to the housekeeper. Sensing how much she valued this, Diana felt a pang of jealousy.
With only two days left until the weekend, during dinner, Caroline mentioned that they would be going to the Wolf Mansion for dinner.
Lisa said, "If you want to go, then go."
Nicholas added, "I'll go with you."
Caroline nodded lightly.
Nicholas now visited Caroline's home every day, and Caroline was helpless but used to it.
After dinner, he would go to his guest room to get some work done and then naturally stay the night.
Josie was especially happy to see Nicholas every day. Sometimes, when he wasn't busy, he would play with her, and Caroline would tell her stories every day.
After dinner, Josie proudly brought out a test paper.
Caroline took it and saw the prominent score.
"100! My Josie is amazing!"
Josie was very happy and then turned to look at Nicholas, waiting for his praise.
Nicholas picked her up and kissed her.
"Josie is so smart."
Josie's laughter rang out, clear as a bell.
On the weekend, Daniel had a car parked outside Caroline's house early in the morning.
Paul, having heard about it from Clayton, also came to see.
He leaned lazily against the car, a roguish smile on his lips, and blew a kiss to a passing pretty lady.
The pretty lady thought to herself, 'What is he doing?'
"Caroline." Seeing Caroline and her group come out, Paul immediately went over and picked up Josie.
"Did you miss Uncle Paul?"
Josie replied, "No."
"You dare not miss me?" Paul tickled Josie.
They happily played around.
