Chapter 765 Drowning Sorrows

Alex was taken aback for a moment.

He took a deep breath and looked at Clara, who was lying on the hospital bed. He suddenly remembered, how could Clara go to the rooftop in her current state?

"Are you okay?" Alex asked.

"I'm fine." Clara smiled, but it was a forced smile. "How could anything be wrong with me?"

This sentence sounded a bit lonely to him.

Alex felt a faint pain in his heart.

The table was piled with cookie wrappers.

"Why did you eat so many cookies?"

Clara pretended to be relaxed and said, "No one brought me food, so I had to eat cookies to fill my stomach."

The more relaxed her tone, the more pitiful she seemed to him.

Alex frowned slightly. "Why didn't you tell me that?"

"I didn't want to bother you all the time. Aren't you very busy with work? It's Saturday today. You should be working overtime, right?"

"I'm not working today."

"Then why didn't you rest at home since you work so hard?"

Alex ordered some takeout for Clara on his phone, then he cleaned up the cookie wrappers on the table and threw them into the trash can.

Clara's dirty clothes were still in the bathroom.

Usually, the caregiver would send the dirty clothes for washing, but the caregiver was on leave, and Clara couldn't move, so she had to leave the clothes there. Over time, with the bathroom's humidity, a strange smell would develop.

Alex smelled it as soon as he entered the bathroom.

Clara peeked in.

She looked a bit uneasy.

She miscalculated; she should have asked someone to send the clothes for washing first.

'Would this make me seem sloppy? Would Alex find me disgusting?' She worried in her heart.

Seeing Alex come out, Clara immediately pulled her head back and pretended to see him by chance.

"What are you doing?" Clara asked.

Alex was holding a basket of dirty clothes.

"I'm sending the clothes for washing. Wait a bit, the food will be here soon."

With that, he walked out.

Clara felt a strange sensation in her heart. She looked in the direction Alex left and didn't come back to her senses for a long time.

After a while, she suddenly remembered.

'Wait, my underwear is in there too!' Clara remembered.

The international VIP ward had a separate laundry room. Alex put all the clothes into the washing machine. When he threw them in, he saw Clara's underwear.

Alex froze for a moment, and his ears turned slightly red.

Throwing underwear into the washing machine didn't seem very proper.

Then he saw a washing machine specifically for underwear nearby.

Alex breathed a sigh of relief and awkwardly threw the clothes in.

Not long after, Alex returned. When Clara saw him, her toes curled up immediately, and she felt so embarrassed she could hardly breathe.

She didn't dare to ask how he handled her underwear.

The atmosphere was silent and awkward.

To ease the tension, Alex started to find things to do.

He picked up a throw pillow from the sofa and fiddled with it.

At that moment, his phone rang. It was Angela calling.

Alex then remembered that he had left Angela at the movie theater in a hurry.

Alex went outside to take the call.

"Alex, where did you go?" Angela asked in worry.

The movie had already ended, and Alex had said he was going to the restroom but never came back.

"Sorry, I had to leave for something."

Angela was silent for a moment, clearly unhappy with Alex's sudden departure.

Alex realized he had been rude. "It was something urgent for work, so I didn't have time to tell you. I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you with dinner tomorrow night."

"I understand. See you tomorrow night then."

"Okay."

After hanging up, Alex still felt guilty about leaving Angela at the theater and coming to the hospital to see another woman. Moreover, he had lied about it being work-related.

So he opened a shopping website and bought a small gift to apologize to Angela.

The takeout arrived, and Alex brought it in.

Clara had eaten yesterday, and the cookie wrappers on the table were deliberately placed there by her, but she hadn't eaten today.

It was already past lunchtime, and she was very hungry.

She had planned to order takeout herself if Alex didn't show up.

Alex continued to feed her. After Clara finished eating, he cleaned up the takeout boxes and threw them outside.

"I sent you a message," Alex said, sounding serious and old-fashioned. "You should eat properly when you're sick, especially with a fracture. You need to take good care of yourself."

"If you don't want to eat the nearby takeout, you can order from this restaurant. They can customize a menu based on your needs."

"I've already spoken to the restaurant owner. They will deliver meals to you regularly for the next few days. If you have any special requests, you can tell them in advance."

Clara saw the restaurant information Alex sent and smiled slightly. "Thank you."

"I also found you a new caregiver," Alex added.

Clara's smile immediately froze.

"Miss Taylor, it's just an illness. It's no big deal. As long as you're alive, there's hope. Besides, it's just a fracture. You'll be fine after a few months of rest," Alex continued, racking his brain to comfort Clara.

"You're not alone. You have Mrs. Lancaster who cares about you, and you have me. Mrs. Lancaster asked me to look after you, so I'll come to see you every day."

"If you need anything, you can always tell me. I'll do my best to help you."

The more Clara listened, the more uncomfortable she felt.

It turned out that after all her efforts, Alex still didn't get it.

She angrily picked up her phone and deleted the Facebook post that was only visible to Alex.

"I got it. Don't worry, I value my life." Clara turned away, not wanting to look at Alex anymore.

Alex didn't know what he had said wrong. He felt that Clara was angry.

But he didn't think he was wrong.

Alex pressed his lips together. "Get some rest. I'll come to see you tomorrow."

Clara didn't respond.

Alex looked back worriedly.

After leaving the ward, he went to find Clara's attending physician to learn about her condition.

In the evening, Alex felt a bit frustrated and wanted to ask someone out for a drink.

He called Harrison.

Harrison replied, "No time, I have to accompany my girlfriend."

Alex was silent.

He called another classmate, and they quickly arranged a place to meet.

Half an hour later, at a bar, Alex downed a glass of whiskey.

His classmate Keith Phillips patted him on the shoulder, sat down next to him, and waved to the bartender.

"The same as him," Keith said.

The bartender poured Keith a glass of whiskey.

"So, drowning your sorrows?" Keith took a sip. "Be careful, it might make things worse."

Keith clinked glasses with Alex and said, "It's rare to see you troubled. What's going on? Tell me, maybe I can give you some advice."

Alex looked at the full glass of whiskey, the liquid swirling in the glass before settling.

"Nothing much."

"Is it work stress?"

"No."

"Then it's personal?" Keith's eyes twinkled as he guessed, "Are you thinking about dating?"
