Chapter 136 Traces
Sophia's high fever persisted and didn't improve until the next afternoon. Although the fever finally subsided, she still felt weakness all over her body. Unable to go to the police station herself, she had Caroline handle it for her.
Caroline returned and shared the results with her. "The police found out that Alfred has already left the country. It will be difficult to catch him now." Caroline said as she averted her gaze, as she continued.
"And since Alfred didn't cause much social harm, the police won't waste resources organizing an international manhunt."
Sophia lowered her gaze, realizing that Alfred would escape like this. She was unwilling, but also helpless in this situation.
Unable to bear seeing Sophia's dejected expression, Caroline asked her to rest and took it upon herself to prepare dinner. Caroline was supposed to start at the kindergarten on Monday, but she had deliberately postponed it by two days due to Sophia's illness.
After tireless efforts, Ethan finally uncovered some leads. As soon as he returned from school, he handed over the information he had found to Caroline.
Overwhelmed with joy, Caroline hugged Ethan tightly and showered him with kisses. "You're such a good kid." Caroline was brimming with pride at Ethans abilities.
Ethan: ...
Caroline immediately showed Sophia the evidence of Tiffany's collusion with Alfred. "I had someone investigate this, Sophia. With this evidence, even if Alfred ran away, Tiffany won't be able to escape." Caroline said.
Sophia's gloomy expression suddenly brightened. "Let's go to the police station now."
Sophia said as she hastily got out of bed, but Caroline held her back.
"I'll go to the police station. You stay at home and rest. I've prepared dinner, so you can eat with the kids later and take a nap. Let me handle this matter."
Sophia looked at Caroline with gratitude and simply said, "Thank you, Caroline."
Caroline hurriedly went to the police station and handed over the evidence Ethan had found to the authorities. She thought that with this evidence, they would be able to expose Tiffany's deception, press charges against her, and hold her accountable under the law.
To her surprise, the policeman’s expression turned complicated after reviewing the evidence. They had told Caroline, "Tiffany is also a victim in this case."
"What do you mean, also a victim?" Caroline asked.
Patiently, the policeman explained Alfred's threats against Tiffany. Caroline found it hard to believe, so the police reluctantly presented the audio recordings and screenshots Tiffany had provided.
Caroline returned home, burdened by heavy emotions over this whole situation. Sophia eagerly awaited good news.
Meanwhile, Ethan had also found transaction records between Tiffany and Alfred, as well as some videos showing their close interactions and confirming what the policeman had said.
After listening to Caroline's account, Sophia didn't say a word. She ate a little, took some cold medicine, and slept restlessly that night.
The next day, she finally felt completely better. She sent the two children off to the school bus in the morning, grabbed her bag, and prepared to go to work.
Caroline was very concerned as she questioned Sophia, "Sophia, are you really okay now?"
Sophia smiled at her.
Caroline started to speak but eventually became quiet not wanting to overstep. "I mean..."
"Alright, I need to go to work now. I'm running out of time." Sophia said to reassure Caroline
Just as Sophia turned around, the smile on her face suddenly disappeared.
She didn't believe that Tiffany was innocent. This woman was deeply scheming, and Sophia was skilled at reading people. Wasn't she the one who managed to make Sophia depressed with those messages in the past?
Perhaps this time, Tiffany was behind everything. But she couldn't find any evidence now. Tiffany had covered her tracks too well.
One day, she would discover the slightest clue left by Tiffany! Sophia was determined.
Sophia arrived at the office, and Larry approached, asking with concern, "I heard you were sick? How are you feeling now?"
"I'm better." Sophia answered in a tone that left no room for argument.
Larry looked skeptical.
"I'm really better, just a slight cold." Sophia insisted.
"Did something happen when you went to dinner with Manager Chuck that day?" Larry asked cautiously.
That day? Sophia had completely forgotten about that day. She had been preoccupied with what happened to Sam and the medication switch.
"Nothing happened." There was nothing worth mentioning about that day. She wasn't afraid of Manager Chuck causing trouble for her in the company.
Since joining Lancaster, how many times had she been put in difficult situations?
Besides, she hadn't done anything wrong, for him to use against her.
"Then why was Manager Chuck fired?" Larry asked waiting to gage Sophia’s reaction.
Sophia looked at him in surprise, "Manager Chuck was fired?"
"Yeah." Seeing her reaction, it was clear she didn't know the reason. Since she hadn't come to the office these past few days, Larry lowered his voice and told her about what had happened.
"I don't know who said it, but they claimed that you and Manager Chuck went to a dinner party, got drunk, and accidentally spilled wine on Mr. Tuck. Manager Chuck took the blame for you and was subsequently fired by the company."
Sophia couldn't understand what had happened. He took the blame, for her. What a joke. Sophia thought.
She didn't want to mention the harassment she had endured, but Larry genuinely cared about her. She felt she could at-least give him the truth.
Just as she was about to speak, Larry surprised her with another piece of news.
"And by the way, Mr. Tuck from Ocean Blue got fired by their headquarters yesterday. Ocean Blue has a new person in charge now, and they are about to sign a partnership with Flora."
Larry's gossip enthusiasm could rival Anne's.
"Sophia, I think Manager Chuck wasn't that capable to begin with. Every time he failed to secure a partnership, he would borrow someone from our design department to have dinner with clients. And no matter how much Margaret wanted to refuse, she couldn't refuse due to the reasons he provided. Would a selfish person like him get fired for your sake?"
When Larry heard it, he couldn't believe it, but the rumors among colleagues were exceptionally convincing.
No wonder Sophia felt everyone's odd gazes today. She had thought is was due to her absence but now it turned out it was due to this gossip.
“As you said, Manager Chuck is not very capable, and Lancaster doesn't keep useless people." Sophia finally interjected.
Gabriel finally did something good, she thought to herself.
Larry chuckled, "Sophia, I missed you so much in these two days when you weren't here."
Sophia had a premonition, and sure enough, the next moment Larry took out his design draft.
"Please, Miss Kelly, give me some guidance." Larry asked as cheerful as ever.
...
Alfred escaped abroad, and even with so much evidence, it was futile to try to catch him. The police quickly closed the case, but Gabriel's relentless pursuit continued.
The leads he found only pointed to Alfred fleeing to country Y, but country Y was so big that he couldn't pinpoint the exact city.
Gabriel mobilized his network and continued to search for this would be needle in a haystack in country Y.
Tonight, Gabriel was going to take Sam to meet Colin. In the afternoon, Gabriel sent a message to Sophia.
In the afternoon, Sophia specifically went to the police station to personally understand the ins and outs of the whole matter.
According to Tiffany's explanation, was it Alfred's purpose to do this just to threaten Tiffany for money?
Such a motive was difficult to accept but it was impossible to deny.
But no matter what, it was because of Tiffany that Sam had to suffer.
So, after finishing work and visiting the police station Sophia headed to the hotel. Seeing Gabriel at the hotel, Sophia's disgust and hatred for him deepened.
"Sam." Sophia's eyes were only on Sam, completely ignoring Gabriel. She smiled and hugged Sam affectionately, "Do you want your aunt?" Sophia asked.
Sam's empty eyes showed a hint of warmth when he saw Sophia.
He took the initiative to wrap his arms around Sophia's neck.
Colin had been waiting for them, and after seeing Sam today, he was planning to return to country M the day after tomorrow.
