Chapter 530 Who's Eavesdropping
Kathy was hanging out by the bathroom door, waiting for Sophia. The second Sophia stepped out, she got hit with Kathy's icy glare.
Sophia tried to brush past her, but Kathy threw out an arm to block her way.
"Need something?" Sophia asked, flashing a smile that didn't reach her eyes.
Kathy tilted her chin up, acting all high and mighty. "Sophia, don't think you can keep your thing with Mr. Lancaster under wraps. I saw him picking you up and dropping you off at Fusion Dynamics, treating you like royalty."
Sophia's heart did a little flip. She thought she'd been sneaky when Gabriel came to get her, figuring Kathy wouldn't catch on.
"What do you want?" Sophia kept her cool. Even if their secret got out, it would just be a hassle.
She hated drama, but she wasn't scared of it.
Thinking she had Sophia cornered, Kathy smirked. "You've got some nerve, hooking Mr. Lancaster on the down-low. Think I won't spill the tea to everyone at work?"
Sophia let out a cold laugh.
"What's so funny?" Kathy's face twisted.
Kathy thought, 'Shouldn't Sophia be freaking out that I'd blow her cover?'
After all, Tiffany was still hung up on Gabriel.
And everyone knew about Gabriel and Tiffany's past. Even though they were done, a lot of folks still rooted for them.
If she outed Sophia and Gabriel, Tiffany's fans would definitely go after Sophia, and Tiffany herself wouldn't let it slide.
Sophia said, "I'm laughing at how clueless you are."
"You! You're the clueless one, Sophia. I was gonna cut a deal with you, but seeing you like this, forget it. Don't blame me for playing dirty."
Kathy waved her phone. "I've got cozy pics of you and Mr. Lancaster. If I post them, the whole company will know."
"Go ahead, post them," Sophia said coolly, crossing her arms and staring her down.
Kathy hesitated. This wasn't how she pictured it.
'How can Sophia be so chill? She's about to become public enemy number one with all the women at work,' Kathy thought.
"Why aren't you posting it?"
"You!" Kathy faltered, her finger hovering over the button.
Kathy thought, 'Sophia's calmness must mean she's got a plan.'
Sophia chuckled, leaned in close, and said coldly, "Gabriel's really into me now. If he finds out you're stirring up trouble and turning people against me, do you think you'll still have a job at Lancaster Group or Fusion Dynamics?"
"If you're willing to risk your future, go ahead."
With that, Sophia gently pushed Kathy aside, took a few steps, and then stopped. "Oh, and by the way, your buddy Patricia might be in hot water right now."
Kathy's face went pale. She hadn't thought this through. Jealousy had clouded her judgment, but now Sophia's words snapped her back to reality. She shivered.
Kathy's phone screen was still on, showing a pic of Gabriel helping Sophia into a car.
She stared at the photo for a long time before deleting it.
Kathy sneered, "Sophia, just wait. Gabriel dumped Tiffany after five years; he won't stick around with you for long. You'll get kicked to the curb soon enough."
Sophia headed back to the banquet hall and finally spotted Larry, who looked pretty down.
Ever since coming back from Fusion Dynamics, Larry had been in a funk.
It was a total embarrassment, and even her design skills were being questioned.
Sophia gave her a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "Larry, don't sweat it. We'll get to the bottom of this and clear your name."
Larry forced a smile. "Thanks, Sophia."
Not sure what else to say, Sophia clinked her glass of juice with Larry's.
Around ten, Sophia was ready to bounce but realized her phone was still with Gabriel. She couldn't find him anywhere in the hall, so she went up to Alex, who was always tailing her.
"Where's Gabriel?"
"Mr. Lancaster went upstairs to change."
"I'll go find him. Actually, just have him bring my phone back."
"Sure thing, Miss Kelly. Are you heading out?"
"Yeah."
"I'll walk you to the parking lot."
Sophia wanted to say no, but thinking it might be Gabriel's orders, she agreed.
In the suite, Gabriel had almost forgotten about Sophia's phone after changing. It wasn't until it rang that he remembered.
He glanced at the screen.
"Jake" was the name flashing.
Gabriel smirked, walked into the bathroom, turned on the shower, then stepped out to answer the call.
"Hello."
Jake went silent for a good half-minute after hearing a man's voice.
"Gabriel?" Jake's voice was ice-cold.
"Yep, it's me."
"Where's Sophia?"
"She's in the shower, can't come to the phone. What do you need to tell me?" Gabriel's voice dripped with possessiveness, staking his claim.
Jake gripped his phone so hard his veins popped.
After a moment, he sneered.
"Gabriel, you think you can fool me with that? No way Sophia's in the shower."
Jake was sharp. He could tell if someone was really in the shower just by listening.
Gabriel didn't even flinch at being caught.
"So what?"
Jake was at a loss for words. Sophia was staying at The Lancaster Villa because of the kid. Her heart and mind were all about the kid. As long as she stayed there, Gabriel had his in.
Meanwhile, in Country M, it was daytime, and the sky was gloomy, about to pour.
Jake hung up and snapped a pen in his hand.
The next day, Celeste handed the toothbrush sample to Ruth.
Ruth didn't take it.
"Celeste, this won't cut it."
"This is Patricia's used toothbrush."
"This toothbrush is too new."
Celeste looked closely at the toothbrush. It was pretty new, but it did show some signs of use.
"Didn't you find any hair?" Ruth asked.
"No, her room's spotless."
Celeste had gone home from the hospital that morning and searched Patricia's room for ages but found no hair.
She figured the housekeeper must've cleaned the room thoroughly.
Ruth said, "Celeste, when I was talking to you about this yesterday, I felt like someone was eavesdropping outside."
Celeste's eyes widened.
"Who was eavesdropping?"
"I didn't see anyone, but I suspect it was Patricia."
