Chapter 606 She Must Atone
"And so what?" Paul shot back, ice-cold.
Diana's face went ghostly white.
She stared at Paul, tears welling up.
Paul's next words cut even deeper.
"You like me, so I gotta like you back? Diana, I used to think you were cool, but after you threw Caroline under the bus, you're dead to me."
Paul was usually the laid-back, jokey type.
Seeing him this serious was rare.
"No, I didn't," Diana blurted out, desperate. "I didn't lie about Caroline, I... I tried to explain to my mom, but she wouldn't listen."
"Explain? You were just stirring the pot!"
"No, I wasn't."
"Diana." Paul stepped closer, his shoes tapping on the floor, towering over her.
Diana's hand shook as she reached out, trying to grab his shirt.
"Please, believe me, I didn't."
"Diana!" Paul called her name again, "If you have any decency left, come clean about what you did."
"Otherwise, when the truth comes out, you're screwed."
Diana's heart sank, and she stared blankly into Paul's eyes.
He wasn't messing around.
Paul glanced at Daniel's room.
"Mr. Wolf and Mrs. Wolf know you're not their real daughter. Think you can still keep your spot as their heir?"
He had just found out Caroline was the Wolfs' lost kid.
"Think it over."
Paul dropped those words and walked off without a backward glance.
Diana trembled, questioning herself silently, 'Should I tell? How should I tell? What happens if I do? Will Daniel and Linda forgive me? Will Mia?'
Diana collapsed to the ground, hugging her knees, sobbing.
Inside the ward, Daniel heard the faint crying outside, feeling conflicted.
When Michael and Mia got home, Michael started yelling. She just sat silently on the couch.
Usually, she'd argue back, even if she was wrong.
But now, no matter how much Michael cursed, she stayed quiet.
Everything was a mess.
Daniel and Linda knew Caroline was their daughter, and they'd definitely acknowledge her.
The engagement between Daisy and Nicholas was originally Caroline's.
Mia worried, 'If the Watsons find out Caroline is the real "Diana," will they switch the engagement back? What happens to Daisy then? And Trevor? Does Daniel know anything else? The orphanage fire, and that I had someone kidnap Caroline.'
Lost in her thoughts, Mia barely noticed Michael's ranting. It was like an annoying mosquito buzzing in her ear.
Mia snapped back and glared at Michael.
"What's the point of yelling at me? Daniel knows Caroline is his daughter. You should worry if he'll find out about what happened back then!"
Mia's words shut Michael up.
Even though Michael wasn't involved, he knew that no matter how much he loved his mistress, he had to stick with Mia.
Just then, Mia's phone buzzed, lighting up with a new text.
She thought it was spam and was about to ignore it, but then she saw the message.
[Hey Mrs. Wolf, hope you're doing well! It's Jared. Remember me?]
Mia's eyes went wide with horror.
"Jared!"
Michael, annoyed, asked, "What are you talking about?"
Mia handed him the phone, taking deep breaths to calm down.
"Jared, the guy who kidnapped Caroline back then."
Michael's eyes narrowed. "Why's he hitting you up now?"
"I have no clue." Mia didn't dare reply or call back.
After the job was done, she cut all ties with Jared, ditched the contact info, and never revealed her identity.
'How does Jared know I'm with the Wolfs now?' Mia wondered.
After the initial shock, Mia tried to think straight.
"Could it be someone trying to scam me?"
Michael nodded, "Maybe, but who'd know Jared worked with you?"
"I handled everything myself; no one else knew." The more Mia thought about it, the sketchier it felt.
'Could it really be Jared?' she questioned herself.
She'd heard Jared fled the country and vanished.
Before they could figure it out, another text came in.
[I'm serious. Call me in three days or I'll spill everything.]
"Scammer, definitely a scammer!" Michael yelled, pointing at the phone.
Mia felt it was a trap but couldn't shake the unease.
She'd been worried about what Daniel might dig up since she got back from the hospital.
Now with "Jared" popping up, she was even more on edge.
Michael warned, "Don't freak out. If this blows up, I'm not saving you. You did everything; I know nothing."
Mia stared at him in disbelief.
"You're gonna throw me under the bus?"
Michael shrugged, "It was all your doing."
Mia's eyes filled with disappointment. This was the man she'd shared a bed with for years.
They'd been in love when they married, but over time, they grew to resent each other, and Michael started fooling around.
As long as she could keep her status as Mrs. Wolf, she ignored his affairs.
But now, with trouble brewing, he wanted to pin it all on her.
Mia felt heartbroken.
"Get out, get out of my sight!" She couldn't stand to look at him.
Michael grabbed his coat. "Vicious woman, you'll destroy yourself!"
He had to get one last jab in before leaving.
Mia picked up the ashtray on the coffee table and hurled it at him. Michael dodged, ready to curse again, but Mia grabbed a teacup, and he bolted.
Mia slid from the couch to the floor, feeling utterly defeated.
That night, she had a nightmare.
She dreamt Jared really showed up and exposed her crimes to the entire Wolfs. Then, the kids who died in the orphanage fire appeared, demanding she atone for her sins.
