Chapter 441 That Deep Affection
"Sorry, Caroline, I know I said you could stay at my place when you got back, but..."
Caroline cut in, interrupting Sophia. "What are you talking about? I'm just glad you're okay. It's not like you could've stopped the fire.. Don't worry, I have somewhere to stay.
"By the way, do they know what caused the fire?" Caroline asked.
Sophia replied, "The police said it was spontaneous combustion from the electrical circuit. The heavy rain made everything damp, corroding the appliances and old wiring, which led to the fire."
The fire at the villa could be chalked up to old wiring, but what about the kidnappers?
Most of them had escaped, and the only one caught was still unconscious from a severe head injury.
Besides Tiffany, Sophia couldn't think of anyone else who would hold enough of a grudge toward her to want to hurt her..
However, there was no proof Tiffany was behind it.
Sophia and Caroline talked until it was 11 PM in Country M, and Caroline finally hung up.
Where would Caroline stay when she got back? The orphanage wasn't an option anymore, and she had given up her apartment before going abroad.
Finding a temporary place to stay on such short notice was going to be tough.
Caroline looked online but didn't like any of the options. She sighed and decided to try searching again once she got back.
She booked a hotel room to stay at until she found a more permanent arrangement.
The next morning, they headed to the airport. Sharpe asked Caroline to help push Nicholas. "I'll handle the luggage check-in. Ms. Clark, could you take care of Mr. Watson?"
Caroline nodded.
She pushed Nicholas as Lisa held Josie's hand, and they went through the green channel to the VIP lounge. Sharpe joined them after he finished checking all their luggage in.
Nicholas was reading the news on his iPad. Even when he was abroad, he kept up with everything going on back home.
The reason behind Gabriel's injury hadn't been disclosed, but it was revealed that Gabriel had been stabbed.
This incident had a big impact on the economy, even causing the Watson Group's stock to fluctuate for two days.
It was possible that there was a mysterious manipulator working behind the scenes.
On the plane, Sharpe glanced at Nicholas before assigning seats to everyone..
"Ms. Clark, sit here."
Caroline nodded and sat down, expecting Josie to sit next to her.
"Josie and Lisa's seats are over here," Sharpe said, pointing to the seats across the aisle.
"Josie, you can sit with me." Caroline thought Josie might be scared and felt it would be better if she stayed close.
When no one was looking, Sharpe winked at Josie.
Josie said, "I'll sit with Lisa."
Caroline asked, "Aren't you scared?"
Josie clenched her little fists and replied, "I'm brave now."
Caroline chuckled and didn't insist, but she hadn't expected Sharpe to seat her next to Nicholas.
The plane was about to take off, and everyone fastened their seatbelts.
An hour later, Caroline couldn't resist her drowsiness and fell asleep. Josie also dozed off in Lisa's arms.
Nicholas continued reading documents on his iPad, while Sharpe rested.
The surroundings were particularly quiet. Nicholas suddenly put down his iPad, reclined his seat to be level with Caroline's, and half-laid down, turning his head to look at her sleeping face.
Could this be considered sharing a bed with Caroline?
Probably.
Even if they weren't sharing a pillow, they were close enough to feel like they were sharing a bed.
She slept soundly, her breathing shallow. Her lips were slightly parted and looked tempting. Her long, thick eyelashes cast shadows under her eyes.
Suddenly, Caroline shifted in her sleep, and Nicholascautiously continued to observe her.
After a few seconds, she found a comfortable position and continued sleeping, even moving her mouth a bit, as if dreaming of something delicious.
Nicholas remembered how she loved to eat, especially street food. She'd eat whatever smelled good, often getting breakouts on her face from overeating.
When that happened she refused to see him, insisting that she looked ugly.
But to him, she was always beautiful.
Nicholas carefully reached out and gently placed his hand on her head, slowly pulling her closer.
He held his breath, moving very slowly to make sure she was resting on his shoulder without waking her.
Nicholas exhaled slowly, feeling content as he smelled Caroline's hair.
If only time could stop at this moment.
If only so many things hadn't happened back then.
If they hadn't broken up, they would have been the happiest couple.
He imagined coming home from work every day to see his beautiful wife and adorable children. He wouldn't work overtime on weekends; instead, he would take his wife and kids on trips.
Maybe they would have more than one child.
Two kids would be great. It didn't matter if they were boys or girls, he would love them all.
With these thoughts, Nicholas drifted into sleep, a slight smile on his lips.
Sharpe opened his eyes, got up, and walked over to Nicholas and Caroline. He took out his phone and snapped several photos of their intimate moment.
After some time, Caroline woke up, still feeling groggy. The air conditioning on the plane was too cold, and even with a blanket, she felt chilly. She couldn't help but snuggle closer to the warm spot beside her, not realizing she was leaning into Nicholas' arms.
Nicholas was awakened by her movements.
Seeing her like this, Nicholas felt happier than if he had made the latest breakthrough in medicine. He held Caroline tightly and covered her with his blanket as well.
The air conditioning was cold, but holding her, Nicholas didn't feel cold at all.
His heart was full, and his once bleak life seemed to be looking up.
In City B, at the hospital, the three children were with Ruth. Gabriel slept until the evening, and when he woke up, Sophia fed him some porridge.
Just then, Sophia and Gabriel were alone in the ward.
Gabriel, having rested enough, was in much better spirits than when he had just woken up.
Sophia stopped feeding him after he had finished one bowl, planning to wait a bit before giving him another.
The doctor had said that his condition required small, frequent meals to help his stomach recover.
"Did you make this porridge?" Gabriel's voice was no longer as hoarse. He gazed deeply at Sophia, as if he had many things to say but didn't know where to start.
Sophia replied, "Yes."
"It's delicious," Gabriel said.
It was just plain porridge with no seasoning. There was no way that it could've tasted good.
Sophia said, "If you don't like it, I can..."
She stopped when Gabriel suddenly grabbed her hand. She stood there stiffly, not daring to look at him.
The atmosphere in the room became tense.
"I like it," Gabriel said, his deep-set eyes filled with unconcealed affection. "As long as you make it, I like it."
