Chapter 183 The Pharmaceutical King
Sophia found the name "Nicholas" eerily familiar, as if she had heard it somewhere before, but she couldn't quite recall where at that moment. She quietly listened as Caroline shared her story, and with each word, Sophia felt increasingly shocked.
She never would have imagined that Caroline, who always seemed optimistic and cheerful, as if she had never encountered an insurmountable obstacle in life, could have such a painful past. Their experiences, as best friends, even had some similarities. No wonder Caroline had been so empathetic and angry on her behalf when she shared her story about her past with Gabriel, standing firmly by her side and supporting her unconditionally, even going as far as to join her in condemning Gabriel.
"Sophia, I thought I had let it go, but today I realized that I truly can't accept it. Why do they get to be a happy family of three, while death separates me from my child?"
"How can you be sure that it was he who caused the death of the child?" Sophia asked.
Caroline would never forget that day when she had narrowly escaped death, giving birth to her child, only to fall into a deep sleep afterward. When she awoke, the nurse told her that her child had been born with a very weak pulse and had not survived an hour, having stopped breathing.
The baby was too small, and the doctors couldn't treat him.
Hatred filled Caroline's eyes. "To him, my child was a stain on his life. He's a perfectionist; he would definitely erase that stain."
"I learned from the nurse that on the day I gave birth, that man had come to the hospital. He said it himself; he said he couldn't allow any stains on his life."
Sophia’s heart ached.
She slowly embraced Caroline.
Caroline's tears began to flow once again, her bloodshot eyes filled with hate, regret, and self-blame.
"I hate that I was too weak back then to stand up to them."
At that time, she was so weak she felt they could have easily crushed her.
But now, even though she was capable, she could no longer find solid evidence to make that despicable couple pay.
Caroline was in agony, and Sophia held her tightly.
Sometimes silence spoke louder than words.
Caroline cried herself to exhaustion and fell asleep.
Sophia covered her with a blanket and prepared to go make some porridge for her.
Outside, Ethan silently left with a cup of hot water in his hand.
The little guy entered the room with a serious expression, and Emma put down her homework.
"Is Godmother feeling better?"
Their godmother seemed fine in the morning, but after they returned to the classroom, the teacher told them that today's violin lesson was canceled. It was only after they got home that they learned Godmother was resting at home.
Godmother looked very unwell.
She must be sick.
"Godmother fell asleep, Mommy is going to make porridge for her," Ethan informed.
Emma had wanted to check on godmother, but upon hearing that she was asleep, decided to wait until later.
Ethan was deeply troubled.
He had overheard a bit of the conversation. His godmother once had a child and was hurt by a man named Nicholas, and a woman named Daisy. They also had a child who went to the same kindergarten as he and Emma Sam.
Nicholas... Josie!
So, Josie was the child of the two people who had hurt their godmother!
Ethan immediately guessed the truth.
He felt a mix of emotions.
Emma and Josie were now close friends. Should he tell Emma that they shouldn't play with Josie, as it could hurt their godmother's feelings?
But Emma would be sad, wouldn't she?
It took Emma a while to finally make a good friend.
Ethan was conflicted.
In the end, he decided to keep it to himself for the time being. He would observe Josie for a while. If Josie didn't hurt Emma, he would keep the secret and let Emma play with Josie. If Josie was as bad as her parents, then he... hmph! He would never let Josie off the hook.
Ethan also found the name "Nicholas" familiar and after searching on his iPad, he discovered the man's formidable identity.
On the global wealth rankings, he was in the top ten along with "bad guy daddy," and in the country, he was on par with "bad guy daddy."
One was a tech tycoon, and the other was known as the "Pharmaceutical King."
Nicholas's team had developed an anti-cancer drug with the best efficacy and the lowest side effects the year before last, earning him the title "Pharmaceutical King."
Now in the pharmaceutical industry, Nicholas's company had become a leading representative. Their stock prices had been rising over the past two years, and his team had also developed more beneficial new drugs.
After learning about the impressive aspects of Nicholas's team and his personal history, Ethan fell into deep thought.
He pondered a particularly profound and incomprehensible question.
Why would such an impressive person be a scumbag?
Daddy abandoned Mommy, and Nicholas abandoned his godmother.
Sigh, Ethan felt the world was becoming fantastical.
If only the bad guy daddy and the Pharmaceutical King weren't scumbags.
Ethan's little mind whirled around, and he finally decided to take the essence and discard the dross. He could learn from the bad guy daddy and the Pharmaceutical King the seriousness and impressiveness with which they treated their careers, and then condemn the scumbag traits they possessed.
Yes, that was what he would do.
Sophia was in the kitchen preparing dinner for the two children and Caroline when she had a moment to spare. She took out her phone and searched for the name "Nicholas." And then the introductions came up.
Online, there were very few photos of Nicholas, almost none, but the name Nicholas itself was renowned. No wonder it sounded familiar to her; the man had such a significant reputation.
"Jerk!"
What did it matter how prominent he was if he was still the biggest jerk around?
But with Nicholas being so powerful, how could Caroline fight against him and seek revenge for her child?
Sophia was deeply worried for her friend.
Caroline slept restlessly; her dreams of the past were causing her mind turmoil. She was young and naive, falling into Nicholas's tender trap, only to be brutally torn apart. The nightmare repeated over and over until she woke up in a sweat.
Sophia was sitting by the bed.
"Caroline, you're finally awake."
Caroline looked as if she had been fished out of water, her hair sticking to her wet face.
"Did you have a nightmare?"
When Sophia came in, she heard Caroline repeatedly shouting "Don't, don't."
After sleeping and sweating it out, Caroline suddenly felt revived. After eating something, she took a shower.
When she came out, Caroline was back to her old self.
She even turned around to comfort Sophia, who looked worried and distressed.
"It's okay. I'm fine now; you don't have to worry about me."
Emma thought her godmother had just recovered from a quick illness, and Ethan, like his Mommy, ended up being comforted by Caroline instead.
"Sophia, I feel so fortunate to have a best friend like you and to have Ethan and Emma as well. I am truly happy."
Caroline meant it from the heart. Since she had lost her own child, she had poured all the love she would have given to her own child into Ethan and Emma. In her heart, Ethan and Emma were like her own children.
