Chapter 619 Collusion
Caroline wasn't in the room; only Lisa and the caregiver were hanging around.
Paul was MIA all morning too.
Lisa spotted Daniel and Linda and gave a small smile.
"Mr. Wolf, how you feeling today?"
Daniel replied, "Way better, Ms. Moore, thanks."
Daniel and Linda gave a deep bow.
"Thanks for raising Caroline."
Lisa, feeling a bit flustered, said, "It's what I should do, no need to thank me."
She'd raised a bunch of kids in her life, but Caroline was the most grateful and loving one.
"Ms. Moore, please tell Caroline that the Wolfs will always be her home, and we got her back. She shouldn't be scared or feel like a burden. Whenever she wants to come home, she can call us, and I'll come get her."
Daniel really wanted to take Caroline home right then, but he didn't want to push her.
Lisa nodded, "I'll let her know."
"Thanks."
Daniel and Linda were about to head out when Lisa suddenly called out to Daniel.
"Mr. Wolf, can I talk to you alone?"
Daniel nodded, "Sure thing."
He asked Linda to wait outside.
With the door closed, Daniel noticed Lisa's water cup was empty, so he grabbed the kettle and filled it up.
Lisa said, "Thanks, Mr. Wolf. I gotta ask, how did Caroline get lost when she was a kid?"
Daniel got serious, "Her mom took her out, and she accidentally got lost. Later, we heard some human traffickers were in City B at that time. The cops thought Caroline got taken by them."
Lisa added, "Yeah, she was taken by traffickers. After they got her to City H, the cops rescued her. But they couldn't find her family, so she ended up at the local Hope Orphanage."
Daniel knew this; Caroline had been through hell.
Back then, they didn't have all the tech we got now, and City B and City H were far apart, north and south. Once the traffickers left City B with the kid, it was like finding a needle in a haystack.
"Not long after, there was a fire at the orphanage. The cops thought it was revenge by the traffickers, but Saskia and I thought it was aimed at Caroline."
Hearing this, Daniel's heart sank bit by bit.
Ten minutes later, Daniel came out.
Linda saw his grim face and asked, "What's up?"
"Nothing, Lisa just told me some stuff about Caroline's childhood. Our poor Caroline had it rough."
Linda's eyes welled up.
"Let's go. We gotta make it up to Caroline from now on."
"Yeah."
Clayton followed behind his parents.
Not long after they left, Caroline showed up.
Lisa passed on Daniel's message to Caroline. Caroline sat in a chair, holding a water cup.
"Caroline, the past is the past. What's important is the future. I see that Mr. Wolf and Mrs. Wolf care about you a lot. They've been looking for you all these years."
"All the bad stuff was caused by bad people. Once we find them and bring them to justice, everything will be alright."
"Your heart shouldn't carry so much pain. You deserve to be happy."
Caroline put down the water cup and hugged Lisa, crying.
It wasn't that she didn't want to acknowledge Daniel and Linda; she was just scared the Wolfs were still in danger.
Lisa gently patted her back, letting her cry it all out.
Her body had been through the wringer, and she was almost at her breaking point. She didn't know how much longer she had, but she wanted to see Caroline happy and smiling before she went.
Caroline felt restless and wanted to ask Sophia out for a walk, but then Sophia texted her.
Sophia: [Out partying with the aunt tonight.]
Caroline: [Gotcha.]
Sophia: [OMG, guess who I ran into!]
Caroline: [Who?]
Sophia: [Linda and Mia.]
When Caroline didn't reply, Sophia kept texting.
Sophia: [Linda's turning everyone against Mia.]
Sophia sneakily snapped a pic of Mia sitting alone and sent it to Caroline.
Sophia: [Look at how pissed she is. Karma's a bitch!]
Caroline opened the pic and chuckled.
Not long after, Sophia texted again.
Sophia: [OMG, Mia just got totally roasted by this snobby rich lady! Her face was priceless!]
Caroline was amused.
Caroline: [So YOU'RE the mystery gossip everyone's talking about.]
Sophia sent an "arrogant" emoji.
Sophia saw Diana head to the bathroom, and Mia followed right after.
"Aunt Jennifer, I'm going to the bathroom."
Jennifer nodded and kept chatting with the others.
The wealthy ladies of City B had their own cliques. They met up almost every month. Linda was super social and had good relationships with many of them, while Mia always lived in Linda's shadow.
Without Linda, Mia was a nobody.
Linda had already told everyone she cut ties with Mia and spread the word about Mia's shady behavior.
So even though Mia showed up, she wasn't exactly welcomed.
Her heart felt like it was on fire, and she was so mad it hurt.
Usually, these people would kiss up to her, but now, they're all giving her the cold shoulder. It's brutal, like getting stabbed in the back.
Diana ran into Mia when she came out of the bathroom.
Mia glared at her and whispered, "Come with me."
There were other people in the bathroom, so it wasn't the best place to talk.
Diana had no choice but to follow Mia out the side door next to the bathroom.
In a secluded corner, Mia coldly demanded, "Is Linda badmouthing me everywhere?"
Diana stayed silent.
"I can figure it out with my toes."
Mia had always wanted to take Linda down a notch, but now she was worried Linda would turn everyone against her.
Mia continued, "When we go back in, make sure to subtly drop some good words about me. Make everyone think that Linda is deliberately slandering me and that she's the real troublemaker."
Diana still didn't speak.
Mia glared at her sharply. "Not willing? Don't forget..."
Diana nodded, "I know."
A few minutes later, Diana returned to Linda's side.
But she didn't follow Mia's instructions. Instead, she kept socializing obediently with the wealthy ladies.
Sophia had an amused look on her face.
She sat in a corner and texted Caroline.
Sophia: [OMG, Diana and Mia are totally up to something! They're like, hiding out in some random corner. I couldn't get close enough to hear what they were saying - this is sus!]
Sophia: [Seriously shady, those two. Definitely plotting something.]
