Chapter 317 You've Been Abandoned
Colin returned to the house, and Sam gently tugged at his sleeve, then gestured. "Uncle Colin, is Daddy here?"
Colin nodded.
"Why didn't you let him in?" Sam asked.
Colin glanced at the kitchen. "Your mom doesn't want to see him."
Sam fell silent, sitting quietly on the side, lost in thought.
Colin observed Sam's expression, his brow furrowing slightly.
Parental relationships had the most significant impact on children, and Sam, being a child with autism, was even more sensitive emotionally than other children.
After a few days, when Sophia's situation stabilized a bit, Colin needed to remind Sophia to talk with Gabriel.
Sophia prepared a table full of dishes, delicious and fragrant. Gabriel had just left when Ruth got out of the car and entered the elevator with the help of Betty.
Colin was still the one who opened the door for her.
"Ms. Lancaster," said Colin.
"Colin." Ruth smiled kindly.
Colin quickly ushered Ruth in but was puzzled upon seeing Betty carrying a luggage bag.
Sophia brought out all the dishes and hurried over when she saw Ruth.
"Ms. Lancaster."
"Sophia, I can't stay in that house anymore; I want to move in with you."
Ruth complained, "Gabriel is barely home; he treats his work as his home, and with Sam not around, as an old person staying in such a big house, I'm too scared."
"Ms. Lancaster." Sophia was helpless. That was where Ruth had lived her whole life; how could she be scared?
"I want to be with the children." Ruth hugged Emma and asked, "Emma, do you want to be with me?"
Emma said, "Yes."
Sophia, feeling helpless, knew that if Ruth stayed, Gabriel would definitely come looking for her. There was no choice; she had to get through tonight first.
Harrison dropped Gabriel off at home, only to find the house pitch black.
"What's going on?" Harrison was shocked.
The estate usually had streetlights on before midnight, but today, it was all dark, looking rather eerie.
Gabriel was also taken aback, suddenly sobering up a lot.
"Hurry up." Gabriel urged Harrison anxiously.
After a while, they pushed open the door and walked into the villa, looking around cautiously. Gabriel turned on the lights.
"Grandma?" He called out several times, but no one answered.
There was no one in the house.
Suddenly, Harrison noticed a note on the table.
Harrison laughed heartlessly. "Gabriel, you've been abandoned."
Gabriel snatched the note, written in Ruth's elegant handwriting.
Ruth: [I've gone to find Sophia and the children. The staff are on a long break, so take care of yourself and don't disturb Sophia and me.]
Gabriel fell silent.
"Ms. Lancaster is too cute." Harrison patted Gabriel on the shoulder. "It must be tough to be in such a big empty house. Do you want me to stay with you?"
"Get lost," Gabriel replied,
"Alright, I'm out. Sober up on your own, bye." Harrison left decisively.
Gabriel looked at the luxurious but empty house, then at the note in his hand, and sat on the sofa with a bitter smile.
Was this his punishment?
It felt like a big chunk of his heart had been ripped out, leaving him empty.
Caroline squatted in a corner of the hospital, hugging her knees, silently crying.
Why?
Lisa was such a kind person, dedicating her whole life to the orphanage. She had nurtured so many children that she didn't deserve this torment.
The doctor's cruel words kept echoing in Caroline's ears.
"The patient's tumor is rapidly deteriorating, and some cancer cells have already spread to the brain, in a very dangerous location. We can't perform surgery to remove it for now. Ms. Clark, if we proceed with treatment, the costs ahead will be never-ending. Are you sure you can handle it?"
The doctor kindly advised Caroline, but how could she easily give up on Lisa's life?
Lisa was her only family in this world.
After crying, Caroline quickly pulled herself together.
She remembered she hadn't given the violin to Nicholas yet.
Caroline returned to the ward, seeing Lisa asleep. She was about to leave when she overheard the family members next to the bed talking outside.
"The Watson Group's special medicine is too expensive; it costs 30 thousand dollars a month. How can we afford it?"
"But the Watson Group's medicine is the most effective. We have to find a way to afford it; the doctor said there's been some improvement."
Half an hour later, Caroline walked into the Watson Group.
She hadn't made an appointment, knowing she couldn't enter the inner areas, so she planned to leave the violin at The front desk staff.
But when The front desk staff heard Caroline's name, they were delighted and enthusiastic.
"Ms. Clark, please have a seat; I'll make a call."
Caroline, puzzled, complied, "Okay."
The front desk staff was ecstatic. After so long, they finally got to see Caroline. After the incident where she had driven Caroline away, she received a call from the general manager's office and was almost scared to death, fearing she would be fired.
Several front desk staff stole glances at Caroline.
They whispered to each other.
"Ms. Clark is so beautiful."
"Yes, she's so elegant; she seems like a perfect match for Mr. Watson."
The front desk staff finished the call.
"Ms. Clark, please follow me."
Caroline got up, carried the violin, and followed the front desk staff.
The front desk staff swiped a card to open a gate and led her into the elevator.
In the elevator, Caroline thought about something and asked the front desk staff.
"May I ask if there's a discount for internal employees of the Watson Group when purchasing special medicine?"
"Yes, there is a 40% discount on special medicine, but it's not for everyone. It must be a direct family member who is ill, and various proofs and investigations are required before purchase," the front desk staff replied,
If everyone could buy the special medicine, it would be chaotic.
Caroline nodded thoughtfully.
They arrived at the general manager's office, and Caroline looked at the spacious office, empty as if no one was there.
The front desk staff stood at the elevator door, guiding her.
"That's the CEO's office over there; the CEO is inside; you can go in directly."
"Okay, thank you."
"You're welcome."
The front desk staff smiled and returned to the elevator.
As the elevator doors closed, Caroline felt a cool breeze.
The office was too cold.
All the decorations here were in cool colors, but she remembered that Nicholas liked warm colors.
Caroline politely knocked on the door.
"Come in!"
The door opened, and Caroline walked in, immediately spotting Nicholas sitting behind the desk, as handsome as ever but with an added layer of frost.
"Sorry, I was delayed by something. I brought the violin; where should I put it?" Caroline spoke in a businesslike tone.
"Put it there." Nicholas pointed to a spot with his slender fingers.
"Okay."
Caroline set the violin down, giving it one last reluctant look.
"I've given you the violin; I'll leave now."
She turned to leave, not wanting to stay any longer.
Caroline's demeanor was annoying Nicholas, and he tightened his grip.
"Wait!"
Caroline halted.
"Come here."
Caroline turned around but didn't obediently walk over.
