Chapter 124 Just Playing Around
Tiffany felt resentful. Gabriel's entire attention was on Sam. If she hadn't called him herself, would he have even cared about her? It was infuriating for Tiffany that all of Gabriel's concern was being snatched away by Sam.
"I feel a bit uncomfortable after the gastric lavage. The doctor said I should rest for two days. By the way, is Sam experiencing any side effects?" She sounded worried and anxious.
Gabriel softly responded, "Hmm."
"In that case, let's stop the medication. I asked Alfred, and this medicine is the most effective, but it does come with certain side effects. If any symptoms occur, we should stop the medication immediately and observe."
"Okay."
Tiffany couldn't decipher Gabriel's thoughts. She felt an uneasy drumming in her heart and pondered for a moment.
"I know Sophia did what she did because she cares too much, which caused her to act this way towards me. But I still feel uncomfortable. Gabriel, I can forgo pressing charges against Sophia, but... can you ensure that she won't appear in front of us again in the future?"
"I'm afraid that's not possible."
Tiffany squeezed the orange in her hand, causing the juice to splatter onto her white dress.
Gabriel had always been accommodating to her requests, and she didn't think this request was unreasonable, but he refused.
"Sophia is valuable to Lancaster."
That was his only explanation.
So she was just going to be bullied by Sophia for nothing?
Tiffany felt indignant.
"Fanny," Gabriel sounded a bit helpless, "Strictly speaking, it was you who endured her anger on my behalf. So, I'm the one who should apologize to you. I will make it up to you."
Tiffany tightly clenched the shattered orange in her hand and with reluctant magnanimity, she spat out a single word, "Fine."
Sam didn't return to the old mansion last night, and neither did Gabriel. Mrs. Lancaster assumed Gabriel, accompanied by Sam, had stayed in his apartment, so she didn't inquire too much about their whereabouts.
While Sam watched TV with her great-grandmother, Gabriel busied himself in his study.
It had been a while since Ethan and Emma last visited, and Mrs. Lancaster was eager for them to come over, especially now that it was the weekend. But Sam worried that her father might be at home, and Ethan and Emma didn't like seeing him. This weekend would probably disappoint her great-grandmother.
Sam concocted a little lie, saying, "They went on vacation."
The hope in Mrs. Lancaster's eyes turned to disappointment.
...
At the international airport in city B, Sophia waited at the arrival gate, occasionally peeking inside.
Before long, an elegant, wavy-haired beauty appeared.
As soon as she emerged, Sophia faintly heard someone exclaim, "Is she a famous star?"
Sophia waved her hand and smiled at the beauty.
Upon seeing her, the beauty was taken aback.
She walked over with a perfect smile, pushing her suitcase, and took off her sunglasses before embracing Sophia tightly.
"Sophia, I missed you so much, sob..."
Sophia patted her on the back gently, then they separated and Sophia helped her with the luggage, which was snatched back by Caroline.
Caroline held her hand and took a deep breath.
"Even the air is different from M country."
Sophia laughed, "Of course, M country has more air pollution."
Caroline rolled her eyes, "Am I complaining about the air pollution? It's nostalgia, don't you understand?"
It had been many years since she last came back. Everything in her home country felt both familiar and unfamiliar.
The two of them got into the car, and Caroline couldn't help but complain.
"No way, you didn't buy yourself a car?"
Sophia had a good income, so buying a car should have been easy for her. It was a waste of money to take a taxi to pick her up.
If she had known this earlier, she wouldn't have let her come.
What a waste of money.
"I told you, I bought a house."
As a first-tier city, the housing prices in B City were insane. She considered herself part of the high-income class, but buying a house in B City had drained all her savings, and she could only afford a small apartment.
Caroline clung to Sophia like a pendant.
"By the way, where are the two little darlings?"
"They're at home. They were so happy when they found out you were coming back."
"Sophia, I have good news and bad news. Which one do you want to hear?"
"Bad news."
"I have nowhere to live, so I have to squeeze in with you and the babies."
Sophia was speechless. This wasn't bad news at all.
Caroline had done so much for her, so providing her with a place to stay was only natural, and she wouldn't mind.
"What's the good news then?"
"I was offered a high-paying job as an art teacher here in China, and I accepted."
So Caroline's return this time meant she was planning to settle in her home country?
"Which university?" Sophia instinctively thought it must be a prestigious university to hire such a masterful individual.
"It's not a university, it's a kindergarten."
"What?"
Sophia was extremely surprised. Caroline was an international violinist who had toured half of Europe. She had heard that Caroline was already preparing for an Asian tour.
"My Asian tour has been postponed due to some reasons, and I think this opportunity is good. Since you and the two little ones are in China, I decided to apply and come back."
Sophia felt like Caroline was playing around.
Caroline snuggled up in her arms and pouted like a child, "I was so bored there without the two little ones to play with me."
Sophia: ...
But Caroline always had a sense of measure in everything she did, so she must have thought it through before coming back.
No matter what decision she made, Sophia would support her.
Just like how Caroline had unconditionally supported her in the past.
Caroline yawned, "I'll take a nap for a while, then we can catch up."
"Call me if you need me," Sophia said as she noticed the worry in Caroline's eyes, seeing her Asian tour suddenly put on hold.
When Ethan and Emma saw Caroline, they excitedly embraced her, and Caroline hugged them back, giving each of them a kiss.
"Caroline, we missed you so much," Ethan exclaimed.
"I missed Caroline too," Emma chimed in.
Caroline playfully messed around with the two children, while Sophia shook her head helplessly and carried Caroline's luggage into the kids' room.
She tidied up the room for the children and asked Caroline to stay there while the two kids continued to live with her.
"Ethan and Emma, let Caroline adjust to the time difference first," Sophia instructed.
Ethan and Emma immediately climbed down from Caroline, and she pouted unhappily, saying, "I can sleep later."
"Go ahead and sleep, I'll call you for dinner later," Sophia replied.
Feeling a bit tired, Caroline reluctantly went back to her room to catch up on sleep.
She slept soundly, without any discomfort. When she woke up, it was already evening, and she enjoyed a meal cooked by Sophia, a long-awaited treat.
Caroline was very curious about what had happened to Sophia, so after playing with the kids for half an hour, she found an excuse to go to the study and chat with Sophia.
Seeing Caroline's eager expression, Sophia sighed and said, "Alright, I'll fill you in."
Caroline looked like she was ready to listen to some gossip, just missing a glass of wine.
Sophia couldn't help but laugh and began to explain in a nutshell.
