Chapter 396 Late Night Snack

Sophia's back was getting better. The bruises were still there, but they didn't hurt anymore.

For the past two days, she'd had the nurse who took care of Caroline at the hospital apply the medicine for her.

This meant Gabriel didn't have a chance to get close to her.

The new brand, Velvet, was a hit, and as the chief designer, Sophia was swamped.

She had no choice but to work overtime.

Sophia and a few designers worked until around ten o'clock.

"Sophie, my husband's here. I'm heading out," a female designer said, grabbing her bag and waving goodbye.

Larry, who was single, had been burning the midnight oil for days. Sophia told him to go home early tonight to rest.

Elodie had just left, too.

Now, it was just Sophia and the new hire, Aurora Garcia.

"Aurora, it's late. Let's call it a night."

"Okay."

They went downstairs together. Sophia thought it was unsafe for Aurora to take the bus home alone so late.

"Where do you live? I'll give you a ride."

Aurora politely declined, but eventually, she followed Sophia to the parking lot.

When the elevator reached the basement, another exclusive elevator arrived at the same time. The doors opened simultaneously, and people from both sides stepped out.

Gabriel saw Sophia, and his eyes lit up slightly.

He thought, 'So, she's working late, too.'

Aurora saw Gabriel and quickly greeted him, "Mr. Lancaster."

Gabriel, as usual, responded with a slight nod.

"Mr. Lancaster," Sophia greeted him, too, keeping their relationship under wraps. She acted like just another employee.

Gabriel paused and looked at Sophia with a complicated expression.

Sophia kept it professional. "Mr. Lancaster, do you need something?"

Gabriel gritted his teeth. "No."

He walked away briskly. Since she didn't want others to know about their relationship, he'd play along.

"Sophia, why did Mr. Lancaster look at us so strangely just now? Did we do something wrong?" Aurora, who was three years younger than Sophia and had just graduated two years ago, asked curiously.

Sophia replied, "No, don't worry. Get in the car."

"Okay."

After driving for a while, Aurora looked at the rearview mirror curiously.

"The car behind us looks like Mr. Lancaster's."

Sophia said, "Maybe he's going the same way."

Aurora didn't suspect anything and gave Sophia directions to her home.

An hour later, Sophia finally arrived home. After parking the car and taking a few steps, a voice suddenly startled her.

"Why so late?"

Sophia patted her chest to calm herself.

Gabriel emerged from the shadows, looking concerned.

"Did I scare you?"

Sophia rolled her eyes. "Obviously!"

Gabriel chuckled, feeling pleased.

"Let's go upstairs."

Sophia rolled her eyes again, wondering if Gabriel was mocking her for being easily scared.

The kids were already asleep, and Betty had made some late-night snacks before going to bed.

Gabriel saw two steaming plates of pasta and mentally gave Betty a thumbs-up.

He carried the two plates on a tray and rang Sophia's doorbell.

When Sophia opened the door, the aroma hit her, and before she could react, her stomach growled loudly.

She wanted to refuse, but the words wouldn't come out.

Gabriel smiled and squeezed in with the pasta. "Let's eat together."

Sophia had no choice but to sit in the dining room and eat with him.

While eating, Sophia was also replying to messages on her phone. Whatever she was reading made her smile continuously.

Gabriel frowned and craned his neck to see, catching a glimpse of the name Jake.

He thought, 'So, she's chatting with Jake and having such a good time?'

Gabriel suddenly lost his appetite.

"Are you still in touch with Jake?" Gabriel asked, clearly jealous.

"Yes, we're friends, so of course, we stay in touch."

"He's not a simple person. It's better if you stay away from him."

Sophia's smile faded slightly, and she glanced at Gabriel. "Since I met him, he has never shown me any malice. In fact, he has always helped me. When your bodyguard beat me, it was he who saved me from being beaten to death."

"When Sam was kidnapped, along with Ethan and Emma, he climbed the mountain with me to rescue the three children, and he got injured in the process."

"Gabriel, you have no right to interfere with my friendships."

Sophia had sensed that Jake's background might be complicated, but he had never shown her any ill will and had always helped her, like a friend.

Being with him made her feel comfortable and relaxed.

Gabriel's grip on his utensils tightened, the veins on the back of his hand bulging.

He admitted he was jealous of Jake, but more than that, he was worried Jake might harm Sophia.

Jake seemed harmless, but he was actually mysterious and unpredictable.

"I'm done. Take your time," Sophia said, taking her plate to the kitchen, washing it, and placing it back on the tray.

Gabriel had lost his appetite.

A few minutes later, Gabriel took the two empty plate back to his place.

Before bed, Jake sent a message.

Jake: [I got the tickets for the auction.]

Sophia was excited and quickly replied.

Sophia: [Thank you!]

Jake: [We're so close now. Don't be so polite, or I'll get mad.]

Sophia sent a cute emoji in response.

They wished each other goodnight.

Lying down, Sophia thought that even though she couldn't afford to buy back the house now, she still wanted to know who ended up with it.

"Nicholas, you and Josie should move back. No one is there to take care of you, especially Josie."

In the hospital, Daisy looked at Nicholas, her eyes and nose red, looking pitiful.

She pleaded, "Now that your parents are sick, the whole Watson family is in chaos. Nicholas, I..."

As Daisy spoke, tears began to fall.

Nicholas remained expressionless, listening to her before having Sharpe push him away.

"Nicholas," Daisy called out to him.

Aragorn had fainted from a sudden illness and was urgently taken to the hospital. Daisy immediately called Nicholas.

Nicholas rushed over and had just finished speaking with the doctor.

Daisy hadn't expected Nicholas to move out of the Watson family with Josie.

She thought, 'And now that Caroline and Josie have reunited as mother and daughter, does Nicholas know what I've done back then?'

'What will Nicholas do?'

Daisy's mind was in turmoil.

"Nicholas!"

At that moment, Gummidge came out of the ward.

She looked at Nicholas' back with a face full of sorrow.
