Chapter 628 Departure
Jared had already been sent back, and it didn't take long for him to spill the beans about all the shady stuff he’d done, including the people he trafficked and how he pulled it off. One of those incidents was when he and Mia teamed up to kidnap Caroline.
Jared's confession, along with Diana's recording and the proof that Mia had told Jared to torch the orphanage years ago, meant Mia was totally screwed this time.
Linda spent two days in the hospital, and Daisy came by, all teary-eyed. Linda sent her away, saying she had a headache and needed some rest.
"Why hasn't Caroline come to see me yet?" Linda grumbled.
Caroline hadn't visited since she left yesterday.
'Is she still mad at me?' Linda wondered.
When Caroline finally showed up, she saw Linda looking all helpless on the bed.
Her heart ached a bit.
"Mrs. Wolf."
Linda heard Caroline's voice and turned around, her face lighting up.
"Caroline, you finally came to see me. Come over here."
Daniel heard Caroline call Linda "Mrs. Wolf" and raised an eyebrow.
It was like Caroline calling Linda "Mom" in a moment of urgency yesterday was just his imagination.
Linda also wasn't sure if Caroline calling her "Mom" was a dream or real.
But right now, Caroline was here, and that made Linda super happy, so she let the whole "Mrs. Wolf" thing slide.
Caroline brought some fruit.
"Want an apple?"
Linda nodded, "Sure."
"Want me to peel it for you?"
"Okay."
Caroline peeling an apple for her made Linda feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
But Caroline didn't stay long; she had to leave after half an hour.
Linda was reluctant and held Caroline's hand.
"Will you come see me again tomorrow?"
"Your test results will be out in the afternoon, and you can be discharged then," Caroline reminded her.
"I still feel really uncomfortable. I might need to stay another day."
Caroline was silent.
She thought Linda acting all spoiled was kind of cute.
"I'll visit you at The Wolf Mansion if I have time."
"I don't want that." Linda didn't catch on and said no; she wanted Caroline to come to the hospital to see her.
But realizing what Caroline had said, Linda was overjoyed and tightly held Caroline's hand.
"Really?"
Caroline nodded, "Yeah."
Linda was immediately relieved.
"Daniel, see Caroline out."
"Okay."
Daniel walked Caroline out, and they were quiet on the way.
When they reached the hospital parking lot.
Caroline said, "Mr. Wolf, you should go back."
She seemed a bit distant from Daniel and Linda, but Daniel could tell Caroline was already warming up to them.
"Let's have a talk."
Caroline was puzzled. "About what?"
Daniel leaned against the car door and got straight to the point.
"Linda is usually very composed. She is a model lady in high society, dignified and graceful, and she can keep her cool no matter what happens. She has never lost her temper or hit anyone."
Caroline mimicked his posture, leaning against the car door. As he spoke, she was suddenly back in that moment when they first met.
Linda was indeed a very noble and elegant lady.
"But whenever it comes to our daughter, she becomes a totally different person."
"When you were first lost, she went crazy looking for you everywhere but couldn't find you. Later, when people told her that you had been tortured to death by human traffickers, she gradually lost hope."
"Because she had nightmares every night and her mental state deteriorated, the doctor prescribed her medication. Eventually, she not only lost hope of finding you but also lost the will to live."
Daniel's voice got a bit choked up.
"Even though we saved her in time, she hasn't been the same since."
Caroline's heart felt like it was being squeezed.
"Daisy is about your age, so I followed the doctor's advice and had her stay with Linda, keeping her company. With the doctor's help, your mom slowly got better."
"But all these years, we've been searching for you. I won't go into all the struggles we faced."
Daniel turned his head, his eyes red but full of love as he looked at Caroline.
"Caroline, what I want you to know is that Linda and I love you very much. We were cruelly separated by Mia for over twenty years. The fact that we're together now shows that fate doesn't want our family to keep suffering."
"From now on, our family will be okay. Your mom and I will do everything we can to make it up to you."
Caroline lowered her head, and tears splashed onto her shoes.
Daniel reached out and gently patted her head.
Meanwhile, Diana was packing her things at The Wolf Mansion. She looked around her room, remembering how Linda had cared for her.
Since she was discharged from the hospital and came to the Wolfs, Linda had been nothing but loving and caring.
She always made sure Diana had the best of everything.
The walk-in closet was full of designer clothes, many of which she hadn't even worn.
The jewelry and accessories, Diana couldn't even wear them all.
From now on, all this luxury would no longer be hers.
The butler watched from the side.
"Miss Scott, Mrs. Wolf said you can take all the clothes you've worn."
Even the butler's tone and attitude towards Diana had changed.
Diana only had one suitcase, which couldn't hold much. She wouldn't take all the clothes.
She only packed a few changes of clothes and took some important items before leaving.
The butler watched her go.
Diana looked back, feeling a pang of regret.
From now on, her life of luxury was completely over.
She used to drive down this road, but now she had to walk out on foot.
Once she went through the gate, there was no turning back.
Diana squatted by the roadside and cried loudly.
Now that Mia was caught, she should be happy. Mia could no longer threaten her.
But she was very sad, extremely sad.
She had lost not only her identity as the wealthy daughter of the Wolfs but also Paul.
Diana thought, 'With my commoner status, I could never marry Paul. The Watsons would never accept me. Paul would never like me.'
"Crying at someone else's door, people might think there's a funeral." A familiar, slightly roguish voice came.
Diana looked up in surprise.
"Paul!"
Her heart was pounding.
'Why is Paul here? Does he come specifically for me?' She wondered.
Diana hurriedly wiped her tears with her sleeve and accidentally twisted her ankle as she stood up.
Paul frowned and reached out to steady her, but as soon as she was stable, he pulled his hand back.
"Don't get me wrong; I'm not here for you."
He was here to find Clayton.
Clayton's phone was unreachable, he wasn't at school, and he wasn't at the hospital with his parents.
So Paul saw Diana crying here.
It didn't look good, so he got out of the car.
Diana's eyes showed a hint of disappointment, but she was still happy to see Paul before leaving.
