Chapter 597 It's Caroline

So, this dude flashes a wad of cash, and the driver, tempted as hell, agrees to help him out.

"Oh, by the way, my car's got a dashcam. It probably caught the guy's face," the driver says.

The cops pull the footage from the taxi, but all they get is a shot of the guy's back.

"Mind if I take a look?" Daniel asks.

The cops hand over the phone.

Daniel watches it a few times, then catches a half-side view, spotting a black mole near the guy's ear.

"Ivan Carter."

If Daniel's memory serves him right, Ivan's some distant relative of Mia.

One year, Ivan hit up City B looking for Mia's help and stirred up trouble with the Wolfs, eventually getting booted out by Daniel.

That's why Daniel remembers Ivan so well and recognizes him right away from the mole.

With Daniel's info, the cops move fast to nab Ivan.

An hour later, they drag Ivan into the station from his place.

Seeing Daniel, Ivan starts cursing up a storm.

When asked why he went after Daniel, Ivan spits out, "Back then, I went to City B, and Mia got me a job, but Daniel here forced my whole family back to the sticks."

"I still can't land a decent job, my family calls me a loser, and I can't even pay for my kid's school."

"I hate him. It's all his fault I got run out of City B and couldn't stay. He's the reason my family's been through hell."

"So I wanted to get back at him."

Daniel gives him a cold stare.

"That's on you, man. You can't blame others."

Ivan got kicked out 'cause he was stealing from the Wolfs; otherwise, Daniel might've cut him some slack and given him a spot at Wolf Group.

Ivan admits he hired the driver to go after Daniel for revenge.

Both he and the driver end up in cuffs.

Daniel and Nicholas leave the station.

"Nicholas, can you get me a car and driver?" Daniel asks, feeling a bit down since he can't drive himself right now.

"Sure thing." Nicholas pauses, then adds, "Mr. Wolf, don't you think this whole thing's kinda fishy?"

"What do you mean?" Daniel's head's still pounding, and he can't think straight.

Ivan's the type to hold grudges, so it's not a stretch he'd want revenge.

"The driver confessed, Ivan got arrested, and he didn't even try to deny it, just admitted it was revenge against you." Nicholas furrows his brows, thinking out loud, "Mr. Wolf, are you sure the driver wasn't trying to kill you last night?"

Daniel stops to think.

He recalls the previous night carefully.

The driver had gone for him without hesitation, aiming to take him out.

"Maybe they planned it all out to dodge punishment and get lighter sentences," Nicholas continues, "And how did Ivan know you were heading to City H, and when you'd land?"

'Yeah, how did Ivan know my private schedule?' Daniel wonders.

"I almost bought Ivan's crap!" Daniel says angrily and heads back to the station.

A few minutes later, he comes back out and gets in the car.

"Let's roll."

Daniel doesn't have time to wait for the interrogation results; he'll figure it all out later.

Nicholas shot Sharpe a look, and Sharpe turned the car back to the hotel.

Daniel wasn't dumb; he knew something was up, but he had bigger fish to fry right now.

Sharpe quickly found a car for Daniel and hired a bodyguard to drive him over to City H.

Daniel headed straight to Saskia's place.

Nicholas had work piling up, so as soon as Daniel left, he dove back into his tasks.

On the way to the base, Nicholas shot a text to Caroline.

Nicholas: [Daniel's on his way to see Saskia.]

Caroline read the message after class and froze until one of her students waved a hand in front of her face.

"Miss Clark, you okay?"

Caroline forced a smile, "Yeah, I'm fine."

She packed up her violin and headed back to her office.

Nicholas sent another message.

Nicholas: [Want me to stop him?]

Caroline: [No need.]

She started typing another message but hesitated and retyped it.

Caroline: [Is he okay?]

Nicholas seemed to sense her worry.

Nicholas: [Mr. Wolf's got some minor injuries, but the bad guys are caught.]

Caroline: [Got it.]

Nicholas: [Back to the grind.]

Caroline: [Okay.]

Caroline knew that even if she stopped Daniel this time, she might not be able to stop him next time.

In City H, Daniel finally made it to Saskia's house.

He still looked a bit pale but held himself together.

Ruby was a bit shook seeing him like that.

"Mr. Wolf."

Daniel smiled, "Hey, can I see Saskia again?"

"Sure, come on in."

Having met a few times, Ruby wasn't a stranger to Daniel anymore, so she let him in.

Saskia was in the living room, glued to the TV. She didn't even notice Daniel.

Ruby got a glass of water for Daniel, but he waved it off.

He walked straight to Saskia, squatted down, and said, "Saskia."

Saskia's eyes were cloudy, and she swayed her head, humming along with the TV.

"Saskia, please... can you tell me where my daughter is?"

Daniel was on the verge of breaking down.

Every time he came, Saskia was always like this.

Daniel wondered, 'If Saskia never snaps out of it, will I never find my daughter?'

Ruby's heart melted seeing Daniel's desperate search for his daughter.

She tried to comfort him, "Mr. Wolf, don't worry. My mom was a bit clearer a while ago. If you talk to her nicely, she might remember something."

Hearing this, a spark of hope lit up in Daniel's eyes.

He quickly pulled a photo from his coat pocket.

"Saskia, look, do you recognize this little girl?"

He held the photo in front of Saskia.

Saskia, her view blocked, looked annoyed.

She was about to push the photo away but stopped when she saw the little girl in the picture.

In the photo, Daniel was holding a little girl who was smiling happily.

"Caroline."

Daniel repeated, "Caroline?"

"It's Caroline."

A jolt of realization hit Daniel like a ton of bricks.

'So it's Caroline, not Diana! That's how it is!' Daniel thought.

He had been searching for a daughter named Diana, forgetting that the orphanage might have given her a new name!
