Chapter 704 Asking for Accountability
While waiting for the food to be served, Sophia and Jake ate in silence. Sophia didn't speak, and Jake also kept his mouth shut.
They finished the meal in this strange atmosphere.
Sophia wiped her lips and said,"I'm going to the restroom."
Jake nodded, "Okay."
Sophia didn't actually go to the restroom; she quietly went to pay the bill and then came back.
She finally brought up the purpose of tonight.
Sophia took out her phone and showed a photo to Jake.
Jake's grip on his utensils tightened, and he asked with a puzzled look, "Who took this?"
The photo of Sophia and Jake was too intimate. He lowered his head a bit, feeling shy.
Sophia asked, "Isn't it you?"
Jake's expression froze, and he felt a bit panicked, but he quickly calmed down and looked up, puzzled and innocent.
Jake denied, "How could it be me, Sophie? What's going on here?"
Sophia had been observing Jake's expression but found no flaws.
Sophia continued, "Someone sent this misleading photo to Gabriel, trying to drive a wedge between me and Gabriel."
Jake asked, "You think that person is me?"
Sophia furrowed her brows and remained silent, which was a tacit acknowledgment.
Jake showed a hurt expression.
Jake sighed, "So, in your heart, I'm that kind of person?"
Sophia pressed her lips together. Seeing him like this, she felt a bit uncomfortable, but...
She took out a few photos and placed them on the table. When Jake saw them, his face changed several times.
"The car accident we had on the highway wasn't an accident, right?"
Jake didn't speak.
Sophia continued calmly, "Jake, in my heart, you're like my own brother, but I realize I don't understand you at all. I don't know what kind of person you are."
Every word Sophia said made Jake feel more and more uneasy.
Sophia added, "The last time I suddenly fainted at your house, was it really just low blood sugar?"
Jake's hand trembled slightly.
Sophia said, "Patricia and Tiffany both went crazy, and before they did, I happened to complain to you about what they had done."
The music in the restaurant was beautiful and soothing. Under the warm lights, Jake lowered his head slightly, making it hard to see his expression.
"They went crazy because they deserved it. They did too many bad deeds. Shouldn't you be happy about that?" Jake's voice was no longer as clear and pleasant as before. It had become hoarse and devoid of warmth, like someone who had turned evil.
Sophia replied, "They deserved it. Seeing them suffer makes me happy."
Jake was confused, "Then what's the problem?"
Sophia felt like she was being confused by Jake.
"Jake, what exactly do you want?"
She couldn't imagine that the car accident was orchestrated by Jake. In that situation, a slight mistake could have cost both of them their lives. Did he even consider the consequences? Or did he think that achieving his goal was worth risking his own life?
"I'm such a failure," Jake said with a self-deprecating laugh, "I've been by your side for so long, yet I never dared to confess, so you never considered me, did you?"
Sophia pressed her lips tightly together and said nothing.
Jake continued sadly, "I did cause the car accident. I just wanted to increase my importance in your heart. I wanted to prove to you that I could protect you with my life. I like you. At first, I was worried you hadn't moved on from your previous relationship, so I wanted to give you time. But I didn't expect that during the time I gave you, you got involved with Gabriel again. You two ended up back together. And I am nothing."
Jake's heart ached deeply. He was enveloped in a sorrowful emotion, looking as desolate as an abandoned child, which made Sophia's heart soften a bit.
Jake added, "Yes, I had someone take the photo. I want to be with you. Why should Gabriel, who hurt you, get to be with you, while I, who love you so much, can't get your love?"
Jake suddenly looked up, his eyes red, like a wounded rabbit.
Sophia's hand gripped the water glass tightly.
"I'm sorry," she said, hardening her heart, "We shouldn't see each other anymore."
Sophia felt very confused. At first, she didn't notice Jake's feelings for her. She always treated him as a friend. Later, she noticed some signs, but since Jake didn't say anything, she was afraid she was just being wishful.
There couldn't be a third person in a relationship, so no matter what, she had to hurt Jake.
Jake looked at her, deeply hurt.
Jake thought in mind, 'Sophia didn't want me anymore. Really didn't want me!'
Jake's face turned pale, and a voice in his head screamed, 'Now, immediately, forcibly take her away, take her to a place where no one is, and lock her up. She will be yours.'
His eyes became even redder.
Sophia picked up her bag, stood up, and left without looking back.
Jake's broad, straight back suddenly collapsed. He turned his head and watched as Sophia got into her car, which slowly disappeared from view.
The pink roses, symbolizing first love, were left abandoned on the chair.
Jake suddenly laughed, a sad laugh that quickly turned twisted, his eyes filled with madness.
Jake shouted, "I absolutely won't allow it!"
At the traffic light, Sophia stopped her car and waited for the green light. She suddenly realized, 'Wait, wasn't I here to confront Jake? How did it turn into her feeling guilty?'
But on second thought, Jake indeed hadn't done anything to hurt her, except for that low blood sugar incident, which she had recently doubted. However, when she tried to find the truth, she couldn't get anything; the hospital no longer had her medical records.
The sound of a car horn behind her brought Sophia back to reality. She realized the light had turned green and quickly stepped on the gas.
She had already made things clear with Jake today and expressed her stance. She believed he understood her meaning.
When Sophia got home, the four kids were still awake, so she played with them for a while.
Around eleven, Gabriel came back.
Sophia had prepared a meal for them to eat together.
There were quite a few chili peppers in both bowls of pasta. Gabriel frowned slightly at the sight.
Sophia asked, "What's wrong?"
Previously, Gabriel had been training himself to eat spicy food to fit in with Ethan and Emma's tastes.
Now he could eat spicy food.
But recently, he couldn't.
Gabriel replied, "It's nothing. It looks delicious, and I'm really hungry."
He sat down and started eating.
Sophia said, "I met with Jake tonight."
Gabriel paused but said nothing.
Sophia explained, "That photo, if I hadn't discovered it myself, were you planning not to let me know?"
Gabriel asked, "What photo?"
Sophia took out her phone and showed it to him.
